Will deepfake technology move the public's reliance away from social media and obscure websites and back towards news agencies and reporters with the best, long-standing reputations?

I seriously cannot see how deepfakes is any more dangerous than deepstupid.

This is the biggest missile defense setup to shield democrats I've ever seen.

If a Dem says it: "Deep Fakery!"

If a R says it: "We got'em on video!"

if Bernie says it: "yeah, ok. I agree, but we're still going to deep-six him"

Why don't we have an "intentionally idiotic troll" flag yet?

Just consider every video a rumor from now on.

Unless or until proven reliable.

Is the source of the video or data reliable?

If not then the video or data is not reliable and not to be trusted.

Like our President. Nothing he says can be trusted as he is not a reliable source.

Which is just Sad.

Oh! Look.

Exhibit A.

Another unreliable source to be discounted.

Have we learned nothing from 2016? You don't even need deep fakes to convince people fake things are real. You just need Sean Hannity and the gang.

Open up the floodgates and let it all out - Real and Fake. The last thing we need is a government agency, regulating the internet.
Positive emotion trumps negative emotion every time

Trumpers already live in an alternate reality.

They believe everything Trump says without the need for fake videos.

It's been Republican supporters who have doctored videos so far. Hillary Clinton "having seizures", Pelosi "sounds drunk", CNN reporter Jim Acosta "assaulted" an intern...

Liberals will be able to tell which videos are deepfake. We'll know when something doesn't sound or look right. Republicans will claim they're real because they all believe every crazy conspiracy theory anyway.

Seriously. Deepfake just adds insult to injury.

In general I agree that liberal thinkers are more keen to avoiding deception, but the point of the technology is to make visual and audio alterations indistinguishable, so you must rely on logic and language to deduce context that is otherwise modified or hidden as being misrepresented. I like to imagine that I'm okay at that, but the fact is most data is crudely altered and used as a lure to propagate specific and usually inane ideas. A critical analyst will still need to process the data, which means some of it does become reference, for the better or worse. Knowing what is important to which agenda becomes an entire literacy program when deciphering that level of deception. It also helps to read in cadence and other corrective factors.

There is a French film about copying and animating actors rather than get permissions for certain roles. The implication of "ownership" as a matter of perception is similar to deliberately burying a revolutionary discovery or invention.

It would be wonderful to believe authorities, in particular those scientific groups we admired for their mission statements. The reality is monetization trumps all other considerations, or we would obviously use Tesla towers and essential services would not be privatized. The deep fakes have already been enabled and their productions fed to the masses as law.

I do hope the AI uses reverse-order correlation, forcing references from existing conditions as it's instruction and eventual logical pre-predetermined outcomes. We should expect the eventual Putin Pelosi sex tape, because they both seem to groom the US government for Republican monetization agendas and that is the logical explanation for Trump. I can probably hurt it with Graham Kavanaugh rehearsing the public hearing dressed as Charro and a Mobius strip.

"Liberals will be able to tell which videos are deepfake."

Because you cannot fake stupid.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Again, American politics does not run at the speed of the rest of the world. This is something that should have been addressed a long time ago. Not just the practice but the platform as well.

Awwww...I remember my first political post when I was a pre-teen. Welcome to politics. But, since you are so young, you may want to stop copying bad habits now so you can become an actual intelligent voter tomorrow. Blaming one side for everything is a bad habit. It's actually a huge reason why American politics has become what it is today. So, as you grow kid, just remember that emulating whoever you agree with isn't always the best thing. Be yourself. Think for yourself.

Well within US capabilities to produce fake films of an Iranian oil tanker attack.

Some of the deepfake porn videos now out there are scarily realistic. I can easily foresee a future where you can order a deepfake video starring anyone who tickles your fancy. Movie star? Co-worker? Next door neighbor? The porn industry will soon increasingly be able to help a person scratch that itch. And since that is where the money will be, it will be arriving in due course. Our legislators need to begin thinking about how to address this issue before the wave hits.

Honestly all this talk of deep fakes is serious business. I have been reading about the tech and listening to podcasts on if for a couple years now. It does not take much video or audio to fake someone either. Less all the time.

Think how easy that "Iranian Ship" taking off a "lippet mine" would be to fake.
