Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, June 10, 2019

Long ago, I was captivated by a seductively intuitive idea, one many of my wealthy friends still subscribe to: that both poverty and rising inequality are largely consequences of America's failing education system. Fix that, I believed, and we could cure much of what ails America.

This belief system, which I have come to think of as "educationism," is grounded in a familiar story about cause and effect: Once upon a time, America created a public-education system that was the envy of the modern world. No nation produced more or better-educated high-school and college graduates, and thus the great American middle class was built. But then, sometime around the 1970s, America lost its way. We allowed our schools to crumble, and our test scores and graduation rates to fall. School systems that once churned out well-paid factory workers failed to keep pace with the rising educational demands of the new knowledge economy. As America's public-school systems foundered, so did the earning power of the American middle class. And as inequality increased, so did political polarization, cynicism, and anger, threatening to undermine American democracy itself.

What's this "we" stuff?
I was like five years old.
Baby Boomers did this, and frankly, they are on track for an ugly demise which will be cheered by millions in the generation(s) they screwed.

"American workers are struggling in large part because they are underpaid -- and they are underpaid because 40 years of trickle-down policies have rigged the economy in favor of wealthy people like me. Americans are more highly educated than ever before, but despite that, and despite nearly record-low unemployment, most American workers -- at all levels of educational attainment -- have seen little if any wage growth since 2000."

Your quote, namely that this is an article not about schools but about wage and income disparity, is the reason for the snark in #2.

You're welcome.

Better schools can't fix the nation by forming more productive, ethical, or empowered citizens?
I didn't read the article, but that doesn't seem like an optimistic outlook.

"American workers are struggling in large part because they are underpaid --

#6 | Posted by PunchyPossum

That is right pun. They are underpaid because the dems have driven all the good jobs over seas with all their regulations. However, the jobs are coming back and wages are going up. I wonder why?

You know what else when up in the 70s? Illegal immigration.....

Undocumented population
immigration.procon.org

If income inequality is the issue, why keep increasing it?

Its right there in the equation for the coefficient....

But here we are, saying Boomers are the issue, and people like Snoofy want to continue the same policies debating nomenclature.

The dems are looking for more poor to depend on them and vote for them. The blacks are slowly sliding away from the dumb dems and they need a replacement group.

"They are underpaid because the dems have driven all the good jobs over seas with all their regulations."

You are, as always, full of crap. Wages are shrinking because of union busting started by Reagan. Corporations are sending jobs overseas because Nixon opened China to foreign investment and manufacturing. The regulations which have made our lives better haven't cause all the good jobs to go overseas, corporate greed has.
