FTA

"In a joint declaration, the US and Mexico said Mexico will take "unprecedented steps" to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration, including the deployment of its National Guard, along with "decisive action" to dismantle human smuggling.

The countries also agreed that those crossing the US-Mexican border to seek asylum will be "rapidly returned" to Mexico, where they will await adjudication of their asylum claims. Mexico, the declaration says, will authorize the entrance of those individuals. Mexico says it will offer them jobs, health care and education."

Wait, what? We were told to believe that this would never happen!

Who would have thought that the mere threat of tariffs might help Mexico to reevaluate its priorities?

More likely it was the recent Court of Appeals decision that held that the US can properly return any asylum seeker across the border to await their hearings.

President Trump has long defined his immigration policies as simply a matter of toughness. Indeed, making the border crossing tougher has been the overriding thrust of his deterrence effort. He has complained to border agents that he would love to see them get "a little rough" but that "when you do all of these things that we have to do, they end up arresting Border Patrol people." He even threatened a 25 percent tariff on Mexico for failing to prevent people from crossing the border.

Yet no hardship has deterred millions on this dangerous journey because of what waits on the other side of the border, which is jobs. To remove that attraction, the government would have to get tough not on migrants but on those who hire them. That is a tad too tough, it seems, for most immigration hawks. According to a recent study, the Justice Department prosecuted only 11 employers in the entire nation last year. That is right, with the Pew Research Center estimating that about 11 million undocumented persons are living and working in the United States, the Justice Department is prosecuting at a rate of one employer for every one million undocumented persons.

We have visa programs for employers who can't find Americans to work for them. Trump uses them himself (although Americans do apply).

If you want to stop the flow, resume arresting employers.

Trump's justice department has prosecuted only 11 in 2.5 years! Obama prosecuted 240 in 2012 alone. Trump could staunch the flow ASAP, but he must be unwilling for political purposes, what with illegal immigration as his central MAGA rallying cry. Wouldn't really want to normalize that back to 2000's levels, now would we?

Here Zed, read this and tell us who is getting the better of this deal:

"No one disputes, least of all Mexican officials themselves, that Mexico should do more to help the United States address the migrant problem. Last month, U.S. officials apprehended or refused entry to more than 144,000 people who crossed the southern border illegally, the most in a single month in some five years. That number has grown consistently since January, fueled by the fear of even tougher restrictions to come and a desire to get in the door before it shuts.

Top Mexican officials flew to Washington this past week on an emergency mission to broker a deal to head off the tariffs. Ahead of the weekend, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebard confirmed reports that Mexico would send 6,000 of its national guard troops to its southern border – the sort of physical showing designed to appeal to Trump. Mexico also has offered changes, U.S. officials have said, to its asylum rules that would require Central American migrants to seek asylum in the first foreign country they enter – namely Mexico."

"With the help of UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta, Chavez launched the "Illegals Campaign," which he believed was nearly as important as the boycott. He criticized President Nixon and the Border Patrol for letting in so many "wets," as he called them.

Under the campaign, he turned the UFW into an anti-illegal-immigrant spying organization. Union volunteers became dedicated to finding and identifying undocumented immigrants working on farms -- as well as those giving them aid and comfort. The information was turned over to the feds. While doing yoga "standing on his head," Pawel writes, Chavez gave 19-year-old Liza Hirsch the job of heading up the Illegals Campaign.

"Hirsch distributed forms printed in triplicate to all union offices and directed staff members to document the presence of illegal immigrants in the fields and report them to the INS," the books states.

We need to organize and advocate on their behalf. Immigration needs to be done legally, legitimately, and hold employers accountable for wages, taxes, medical, safety, training, work place protections, and every other regulation that American workers enjoy.

We also need to ensure that Americans have access through jobs programs to those jobs first. The playing field needs to be level and above board. We shouldn't settle for anything less.

How much are you willing to pay for produce? Milk? Bread? Meat?

Eliminating cheap labor will immediately increases prices for everything.

And while you may not personally care, because you're well off enough to be able to afford the increased costs. The majority of Americans will be hit hard. Consumerism will decrease as people won't have as much expendable money. Our economy will suffer.

Either that or we, the taxpayers, will need to supplement wages for farm workers through increased taxes.

Either way, republicans are petty and shortsighted.

No, not at all.

I've suggested we go the cheap, guaranteed route, and start frog-marching the hirers, going up the ladder each time. My theory is if you stop one illegal, another takes his place, but if you stop the illegal hiring, the reason for the migration disappears.

Paying illegal immigrants a sub-minimum wage isn't a solution to poverty, it enables it to continue. Keeping immigrants working as illegals subverts everything we stand for as Americans. I agree with going after the employers, but we need to secure the borders, document (workers) or deport (criminals) those already here, enforce proper hiring, training, safety, taxation, medical, and so on.

Border enforcement needs to funnel towards immigrant gateways, gateways need to vet, document, medically clear, and grant work visas with immediate referral to jobs centers, and offer paths to citizenship.. But it needs to be organized, orderly, lawful,.

This idea of flood the border, run for your lives, then work under the radar has to end for the good of everyone involved.

If you oppose doing it lawfully, you're just making excuses for slave labor and abusive employer scenarios.

So. You haven't thought of any solutions to problems which will arise when you break the system. But you're ready to make it happen. For some idealism.

I've already supplied one solution up thread you ignored in favor of trolling.

The government supplements wages for workers. Then people can get paid living wages to replace illegal immigrants working in fields. It would still be a lot of labor. But at least you'd be paid for your work. You could do the same for all other industries where illegal immigrants are able to find work. Supplement their wages. The jobs will be filled by Americans.

But. For that to work, you'd need to raise taxes. Then distribute them to the workers. Which will never be allowed to happen. Because it will be branded as socialism. Which people have been taught to hate.

Also. Some will never allow others doing a job they consider "low skill" to earn a decent wage. Those people need there to be wage inequality between poor people and less poor people, so they have someone to look down on. It helps them feel better about themselves.

So. Sherp. What's your solution? Should we implement a solution, whatever it is, before or after you break the system leaving people unable to afford common necessities?

Let's see if you can actually hold a discussion.

The liberal media is currently exhausting all energy at hating Trump. Instead, they could be educating America on the actual issues that need to be solved. Enforce legal, documented immigration, legal employment, pay a living wage, expose illegal employers, bleak working conditions, etc.

The right thing to do is do the right thing. for people who are used and discarded. for the poor and desperate. treat them like human beings. make it all legal and lawful.

Is there a monetary cost? yes, we will absorb it as a nation. to do the right thing. educate the people.

Your taxpayer dollars are footing the spiraling costs of illegal immigration - thehill.com

"After all, if these cities decide to nullify federal law, there should be no issue in settling more illegal immigrants within their boundaries. But as clever as the proposal is, it also unveils a damaging policy gap and highlights the staggering costs that illegal immigration poses for state, local, and federal budgets. In short, illegal immigration burdens citizens, both native and immigrant, with immeasurable social and fiscal costs.

Setting aside the legal and moral questions that shape immigration policy, there is a significant tax burden imposed on citizens and legal immigrants tied to a leaky border. President Trump made headlines last year for questioning the costs of illegal immigration. Our dutiful firefighters in the mainstream press fact checked each word and called his $250 billion figure an exaggeration. However, looking at the substance of his argument shows that he was likely on the mark."

Under Obama, tens upon tens of thousands of I9 audits were done of employers. Thousands of fines amounting to tens of millions of dollars were handed out to employers with a substantial number charged and prosecuted. The focus was on employers. And it worked.

11 employers have been prosecuted under Trump. Eleven.

Trump also eliminated aid to Central America that went directly to programs that reduced violence and poverty, exacerbating the problem causing the surge of asylum seekers.

Is it the million who cross legally, every day?
Or the million who cross illegally, in 365 days?
Or... is it both?

If we closed the border, both numbers go a lot closer to zero, right? Is that what you want?

ICE only audited about 0.15 percent of employers last year. Less than 2/10th of one percent. ICE doesn't have computing power? Can't work with the IRS to justify I9's vs tax returns? The IRS has the computing power. Why isn't it being used to audit employer compliance?

Trump doesn't really want this problem solved. He wouldn't have a campaign issue without it.

While ignoring the 12.5 years of control the Repubs have had in the 2000's.

Not at all, I have consistently said that GHWB, Clinton, W and Obama all ignored the problem.

Try again.

LOL

"consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take", but hadn't done anything about and didn't include modified Third Safe Country provisions or increased military presence on the Southern Border.

But the NYT has to save face somehow...

They did a far better job.

Obviously, you posted that without possibly having time to read the article.

Is your knee still jerking?

Under Trump, illegal immigration is unchecked and he does nothing but promote more.

Wait, I thought he was putting people in cages, was inhumanely turning people away at the border and shouldn't build more fencing...

You guys really need to pick one Narrative and stick with it.

Oh, I read it, you just hate that I am right:

"Their promise to deploy up to 6,000 national guard troops was larger than their previous pledge."

Check.

"And the Mexican agreement to accelerate the Migrant Protection Protocols could help reduce what Mr. Trump calls "catch and release" of migrants in the United States by giving the country a greater ability to make asylum-seekers wait in Mexico."

Check.

"The new deal reiterates that Mexico will provide the "jobs, health care and education" needed to allow the program to expand. But the speed with which the United States can send more migrants to wait in Mexico will still depend on how quickly the government follows through on that promise."

NOW you've read it. Don't bump your nose on anything, Pinnochio

Trump wanted to save face by announcing this deal that was already done last December.

Clinton, W, and Obama all did a far better job than Trump is doing. 11 prosecutions of employers with this 'national emergency' he's using to circumvent Congress on trade?

Puleeeeeeze

Carry on ignoring the facts.

ICE only audited about 0.15 percent of employers last year. Less than 2/10th of one percent.

ICE doesn't have computing power? Can't work with the IRS to justify I9's & SS#s vs tax returns? The IRS has the computing power. Why isn't it being used to audit employer compliance?

Trump doesn't really want this problem solved. He wouldn't have a campaign issue without it.

Not mutually exclusive.

I had already read it Unitard, and words like "larger", "accelerate" and "expand" make my point.

Like I said, the NYT needed to save face.

Yep. Nothing but a circus for the evil. Not a single thing to actually stop immigration. In fact, he's increasing illegal immigration and knee-capping the organizations who could stop it.

Republicans will call you the thing they are. Open borders is the refrain. It's also their policy.

Somehow you don't think many different things can be happening at the same time. They are putting children in cages and they are turning away people at the border and many other awful things all at the same time.
Your President is the most evil person to inhabit the WH since his hero Andrew Jackson held the same office. and brought about the Trail of Tears. Racists don't recognize the humanity of their victims. Pretend Trump isn't a racist piece of crap all you want but he is still the racist ------- he was yesterday.

This Mexico "deal" is little more than BS.

This is how nations fall, when some significant part of the electorate become reflexively vested in pretending nothing is something.

Nothing is something defines Trump.

What a shocker, Donnie the Grifter gins up another fake "accomplishment" to gloat about. And his cult followers lap it up like the obedient little dogs they are.

This was visible immediately, but then we have forty-eight hours of a bunch of militant sycophants praising Trump's strength and genius.

Another fake crisis created by Humpy and solved by Humpy!!

Nicely done!

And from the looks of this thread he still has the Deplorables convinced that he is a stable genius playing three dimensional chess when in actuality he is playing them for fools.

Bullying is not negotiating. Imagine a world where we just sat together and talked and made agreements and ate chocolate without shooting off our missiles.

And then we worked together to make the world a better place. For everyone and everything.

It's easy if you try.

So let's get this straight.

Your story is that Mexico - all on its own - decided to close it's southern border to reduce or eliminate immigrant caravans, offer jobs, health care and education to the ones already there, host asylum seekers to the US, and purchase US agriculture products...

Then approached the US to announce their intentions? to which Trump is claiming credit?

LOL. what a couple of butt-hurt ankle biters.

Mexico can make all of the promises in the world. Let's see if they actually follow-through. Ditto for NATO members meeting their 2% of GDP defense funding. They've all promised they'd start meeting this obligation, but that's just words.

"So let's get this straight. "

You are gonna get something "straight"?

Not likely.

But, this is historic!

Trump has finally solved a crisis that he created!

Mexico had already promised to take many of the actions agreed to in Friday's immigration deal with the US -- months before any tariff threats.

Yay! Humpy! Beat that Obama!

Hunting down and killing Osama bin Laden and sending him to the bottom of the sea ain't squat compared to that!

Bro- did you know? OSAMA IS STIIL DEAD!
