President Donald Trump attempted to talk about both defense and science in an afternoon tweet where he claimed that the moon is a part of the planet Mars.

Stable genius. The best words. Knows more than anyone.

NASA should obviously go back to the Moon first. It's the next step in going to Mars. New technology and vehicles have to be tested.

Trump is only saying this because he wants a Kennedy moment of getting to Mars before a second term is over(he'd take credit for it either way, of course). But you don't have to be a stable genius to know that getting to Mars within five years is not possible.

Seems pretty obvious to me that he was referring to the mission and not the moon and planet. Getting back to the moon is a part of the larger get to mars mission. He's considering getting to the moon "solved science", we've done it.

If getting onto your roof was once hard, but you climbed the ladder eventually... you don't talk about climbing the ladder again when the mission is now to re-shingle the roof. Climbing the ladder is part of it, but not the focus anymore.

He says plenty of idiotic things, let's stick to those so that there is some meaning to when we call out his stupidity.

No, the Moon is actually the fossilized skull of a giant alien space monster - but yeah, we need to cover that up.

NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon

He's the one who said we needed to go to the moon in the first place.

But then someone on Fox News said we should be doing more, and like magic Trump changes his kind and blasts out a moronic policy tweet.

"NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon"

Trump Dec 11, 2017: "The directive I am signing today will refocus America's space program on human exploration and discovery. It marks a first step in returning American astronauts to the Moon for the first time since 1972, for long-term exploration and use. This time, we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprints -- we will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars, and perhaps someday, to many worlds beyond."

Trump May 13, 2019: Under my Administration, we are restoring NASA to greatness and we are going back to the Moon, then Mars. I am updating my budget to include an additional $1.6 billion so that we can return to Space in a BIG WAY!"

"I have one of the greatest memories of all time."

"including Mars (of which the Moon is a part)"

I understand what Trump is saying here -- the Moon is a staging ground for Mars -- but it's still hilarious.

@#7 ... I understand what Trump is saying here -- the Moon is a staging ground for Mars . ...

Each mission has always been a staging ground for the next mission. That's the way NASA has done it since the 1960's when all three networks went to 24/7 news whenever there was a space flight. It is how you explore. You take steps. You learn to walk before you learn to run.

Trump Chides NASA for Focus on Moon After Focusing NASA on Moon
www.bloomberg.com

...President Donald Trump criticized NASA on Friday for focusing on travel to the moon, raising questions about the space agency's mandate just months after his administration declared the U.S. would return astronauts to the moon within five years "by any means necessary."

"For all the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon - We did that 50 years ago. They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science!" Trump said on Twitter.

The president's tweet followed an announcement by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration that it would allow private citizens to travel to the International Space Station and open some facilities to businesses to help pay for the plan to return to the moon. But his remarks stood in contrast to his previous directive that NASA return astronauts to the moon by 2025.

He unveiled the plan in December, saying: "The directive I'm signing today will refocus America's space program on human exploration and discovery. It marks an important step in returning American astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972 for long-term exploration and use." ...

"For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon..."

From a budgetary and technology standpoint, NASA absolutely needs to be talking about going to the Moon. The current (adjusted) budget doesn't support a Moon mission by 2024, and currently the technology is still being developed for sustainable longer term missions to the Moon. NASA needs to talk about needing another $10B - $20B in the next 5 years to finish SLS/Orion, start Gateway, and kick off a Lunar Program to even begin thinking about a Moon mission in the truncated time frame.

If NASA doesn't talk about going back to the Moon, it WON'T go back to the Moon, especially in the next 5 years.

Using your analogy, getting to the "roof" is currently impossible with our current budget and operating hardware. NASA absolutely needs to refocus on the ladder before thinking about shingles.

We don't need to be wasting money sending men to two dead rocks. That's dumb, and just a jobs program for NASA technocrats.

@#10 ... NASA absolutely needs to refocus on the ladder before thinking about shingles. ...

I don't think it is NASA who needs to refocus.

I think it is Pres Trump who needs to understands that when he sets a goal for NASA, he cannot on a whim or a tweet suddenl change the focus of that goal.

NASA needs to plan. Because when NASA sends someone into space, they want that person to return to Earth alive.

I am not convinced that Pres Trump thinks that far ahead.

Thanks for that headline that claims Trump thinks the moon is part of Mars.
The Average American sees that, shakes his/her head, mutters "no wonder we hate the left whang news" and vows to pull the R lever in 2020.
