Good for her. It's about time someone addressed the colonial effects of agriculture.

So the members of the Bronx community garden want to grow Yucca, but someone is denying or preventing them from doing so?

And forcing them to grow culturally inappropriate foodstuffs?

Is there a list of vegetables banned by Republicans somewhere?

#5 | Posted by SheepleSchism at 2019-05-22 03:22 PM | Reply

What's not to understand?:

"What I love too is growing plants that are culturally familiar to the community. It's so important," the freshman congresswoman said in an Instagram video while exploring a Bronx community garden.

"So that's really how you do it right. That is such a core component of the Green New Deal is having all of these projects make sense in a cultural context, and it's an area that we get the most pushback on because people say, ‘Why do you need to do that? That's too hard,'" Ocasio-Cortez said in another Instagram video of her walking the streets of New York after leaving the community garden.

"But when you really think about it -- when someone says that it's ‘too hard' to do a green space that grows Yucca instead of, I don't know, cauliflower or something -- what you're doing is that you're taking a colonial approach to environmentalism, and that is why a lot of communities of color get resistant to certain environmentalist movements because they come with the colonial lens on them," Ocasio-Cortez said.

That ought to make a huge dent in fossil fuel usage. We can dispense with industrial agriculture and still feed hundreds of millions through the miracle of Cortez Certified gardens.

Nulli's response to anything AOC says reminds me of the Key and Peale sketch where Obama keeps pushing for republican objectives just so they will reverse course because they are against everything he says.

Nulli 2008: community gardens are the future we'll stick it to the man by growing our own food locally.

AOC 2019: community gardens are the future we'll stick it to the man by growing our own food locally.

Nulli 2019: AOC is stupid. Community gardens won't help.

Allowing people to grow foods that they're familiar with helps community garden buy-in amongst people of color.

Dictating that "You can't grow that food that you're familiar with and enjoy, but here, grow this other food" makes people not want to grow their own food and is seen as people in power dictating the needs of people not in power.

This really isn't that hard.

Or, and I'm just spitballing here..
1) Yucca is a desert plant not well suited to the northeast bitter winters
2) It's a huge plant with a low yield. Something you grow when nothing else will.
3) The leaves are like razor blades
4) You perpetuate them by root cuttings. Just get in under the ball of razors, dig it up, and split the root.
5) It tastes like blah.

All good points. My impression is that she didn't mean specifically cauliflower/yucca, but was using those as examples of the point she was making - it's important for people to feel included if they're going to buy in to major projects like community gardens, green spaces, etc.

I'm sorry to say it but Jesus H how self-centered.

You shouldn't require your community to placate you in order for you to take part in it.

Take part in it and suggest or ask if you can grow X veggie to share. Use your cultural attachment to it as a reason to do so.

Be active, not passive and expecting to be catered to.

The results of Ocrazyio's rise to prominence.

Poll: Democrats Overwhelmingly Believe U.S. Has Only 12 Years to Fight Climate Change

" according to a Rasmussen poll released today, a staggering 67 percent of Democrats believe Ocasio-Cortez's climate change warning to be completely legit.

According to the poll, 48 percent of all likely voters agree that the United States has only twelve years left to fight climate change before the effects are irreversible. The poll did not identify Ocasio-Cortez or Bernie Sanders (who still believes the doomsday prediction to be true) while conducting the survey. According to the poll, 40 percent disagree with the prediction, and 11 percent are undecided.

"The most fascinating thing about the poll, aside from the large percentage of Democrat sea sponges who believe the 12-year prediction, is how the number of voters who believe it has skyrocketed in just a few months. When Rasmussen first polled on this issue back in January, after Ocasio-Cortez first publicly made her prediction, only 23 percent of voters agreed with it. Back in January, however, only 34 percent of Democrats believed what Ocasio-Cortez says only a sea sponge would have taken seriously. This shows the incredible influence the socialist wing of the Democratic Party has on the party as a whole.

The mainstream media claims conservatives are "obsessed" with Ocasio-Cortez, yet her influence on the party clearly shows that she's the de facto leader of the party. Her positions on climate change, impeachment, and other issues have become mainstream in the Democratic Party. Her criticism of Joe Biden forced him to backtrack on his call for a balanced approach to addressing climate change. Biden has been a U.S. senator longer than she has been alive, and she owned him without breaking a sweat.

"Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable that is naturally high in fiber and B-vitamins. It provides antioxidants and phytonutrients that can protect against cancer. It also contains fiber to enhance weight loss and digestion, choline that is essential for learning and memory, and many other important nutrients."

#34 I see the point you're making, but I don't believe for a minute she chose yucca by chance. Let me ask you this: do you even believe for a second that if some came to a community garden and tried introducing a plant from their indigenous culture (okra, sweet potatoes, taro, etc), the people in charge would deny them? Most gardeners I know, especially hobby gardeners, are extraordinarily curious and friendly. No, I believe she intentionally chose her line of discussion, and yucca, to play the racism card.

This reporting confused me, yucca didn't make sense, so I checked the video. AOC didn't say "yucca", she said "yuca", which is another name for cassava. Lots of bad reporting. Yuca would probably be bad crop for NY, but better than yucca.
