Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The production of lithium – an essential ingredient in batteries for electric cars – has become easier and significantly cheaper, thanks to a technological breakthrough, just as US concerns about China's dominance in the supply chain are on the rise. The cost of extracting the mineral has been slashed to a "record low" of 15,000 yuan (US$2,180) per ton by the new process, a Chinese government report said. That compares to an international price for lithium ranging from US$12,000 to US$20,000 per ton – and a long-term contract price of about US$17,000 – over the past year, according to some industrial estimates.

Basically a non-article. Almost fake news when describing it as a breakthrough when we have this directly in the article.

"The precise production costs of lithium are a closely guarded business secret, but industry insiders interviewed by the South China Morning Post agreed that the rate quoted in the report could be considered one of, if not the lowest, around."

So, the article pretty much says this company may have achieved cost party or maybe even leadership. Not exactly a breakthrough in the traditional sense. Reducing production costs by 50% would be the low bar of a breakthrough - a 10x efficiency gain is what I would typically reserve that term for however.

China is making all the new tech innovations and we are here arguing about which brand of nazi-ism we prefer.

Damn, cheeper batteries that last 150 miles but don't go farther. What a deal for anybody living in the western US.

I'll bet that the "breakthrough" on lower production costs involves political prisoners digging it out by hand.

Drivel, hyperbole, wild speculations. It's all you hysteria-clingers-on have.
This is how you've all whipped yourselves into a frenzy of anticipating events that never transpire.
Then the next crisis is launched, and you run to that fire claiming it's Chernobyl.
