Sen. Bernie Sanders issued a sudden live video saying that war with Iran would be "many times worse than the Iraq War," in response to reporting by The New York Times saying that the Trump administration is reviewing a plan to send up to 120,000 troops to the Middle East.

"Sixteen years ago, the U.S. committed one of the worst blunders in history of our country by attacking Iraq," Sanders said in a video recorded live on Periscope and posted to Twitter. He called out Bolton as one of the "leading advocates" of the war, which he called the "biggest foreign policy disaster" in modern U.S. history.

"Now, based on that disaster that he help bring about in Iraq, it appears that John Bolton wants a war in Iran," Sanders said. "A war in Iran would, in my view, be many times worse than the Iraq War."

The senator said that he was working to build a coalition in Congress to force President Trump to ask Congress for authorization if he wants to engage in military action in Iran.

I doubt it would be a "war" it would be similar to the "skirmishes" we had with Libya in the 80s.

Punchy,

It's absurd that a coalition is even needed.

Only Congress can declare war. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. Maybe it was in our founding document....

Punchy,

I know. Congress has sucked for decades. The institution used to fiercely protect and defend its powers. Over the past half century congress has willingly ceded its powers to the other two branches.

It needs to reverse course.

Yes that's true, it's what we do after we destroy everything that matters in the country just to help Trump in 2020. This whole situation is just because Trump couldn't deal with the fact that Obama had negotiated the IRan deal which is still working even though Trump backed out of it. We need to rid ourselves of Trump and put in a President who will immegiately rejoin the other nations in the deal, only this time get it ratified by Congress so the next tin horn dictator a*****e can't just pull us out of it.

Bomb bomb bomb Iran. Some idiot said that years ago.

The only idiocy is nation building after turning one into a golf course i.e. Iraq.

Iran would just be another course.

Why the hell isn't the UN leading this and leave the US out of it?

For once, let Iran's neigbors make up the UN forces completely.

#29 | Posted by Petrous at 2019-05-15 03:12 PM | Reply

The US won't fire the first shot. They'll wait for Iran to do something stupid. The ROW will watch and wait to see if Iran tries closing the SOH, which would be a violation of international law. Then the ROW will jump in.

An Iran war won't be like Iraq or Afghanistan. No need for land forces for the most part. The US military will just raze every port facility from Kharg to Chahbahar, sink their Navy, blow up their missile sites, etc...

Do I think it'll happen? Nope. Too much to lose, nothing to gain.

Because only a hand full of warmongering neocons and a fat, orange conman trying to distract from himself, are interested in a war with Iran.

What's there to lose?

Trump has a presidency to win.

He can't based on his one accomplishment of giving himself a tax cut.

So. Maybe a war will help.

The best and arguably only good thing Trump has done as POTUS has been to be diligent about keeping us out of war. If he should now bumble his way into provoking a war with Iran at this juncture, then he finally really will challenge GWB for the title of worst American leader ever.

Given how long it takes to actually make a nuke you just inadvertently justified Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran deal, since they would have to have been working on them for several years in violation of that deal.

All Iran needs to do is to effectively close the SOH to tanker traffic. When 40% of the world's oil goes missing, it will bring the world economy to a halt RFN.

I have actually read PNAC.
The changing horses mid-stream part isn't in there, is that what you're angling at?

Regardless, the decision to invade Iraq is in there, and that decision was clearly undertaken with re-election in mind, since we didn't invade Iraq for 18 months after the Pearl Harbor level event which PNAC deemed necessary to galvinize public support for our unwarranted aggression.

The other thing that helped Bush win in 2004 was putting gay marriage on the ballot to draw out the Christian vote. Looks like it's going to be abortion this time.

Isreal has nukes and they almost sank one of our ships....what's the problem with bombing them for the sakes of middle east peace?

#52 | Posted by mutant at 2019-05-15 08:17 PM | Reply

Russia and China have mutual defense treaties with Iran.

They have given Iran sophisticated anti-ship weapons that can hit their targets before we know they have been fired.

The juden terrorists of isreal are behind this, but they need U.S. backing/involvement to go after Iranian hard targets. The use of nuclear weapons by isreal is almost certain, and if this terrorist attack goes forward, Pakistan and india loose theirs.

They've already tried false flag incidents, the "sabotage" of ships on non-aligned states.

Oh, and one more thing - north korea is a wild card here, given what is happening globally, would be likely kim would hit south korea and japan, spread U.S. thin. And don't expect The European Union to assist, they remember Iraq.

It is stunning that people think we live in a vacuum, that others do not possess the means of significant retaliation.

Here's how the war will play out:
-troops and sailors start shooting
-oil shipments stop
-price of oil goes WAY up (Russia becomes very wealthy, very fast)
-No US allies join the fight
-Maimed and dead Americans start coming home
-Israel attacked, and terrorist cells go wild in Europe, at Catholic churches, and perhaps even inside the US
-Enlistment levels are too low to replace those cycling out of country
-More maimed and dead American soldiers show up
-A draft is proposed by Trump, with NO GOPers running for election in 2020 supporting it
-Finally realizing that money doesn't buy US soldiers, Trump calls Americans cowards--in an election year
-Having been cowed into a corner by their 'leader', GOP members of the House and Senate realize they are powerless to hold back Trump and his maniacal ways
-Members of the US military senior command start to push back, some resigning their posts. Trump calls them cowards too
-More mained and dead American soldiers show up. Trump NEVER ONCE sets foot in an Army/Navy hospital
-Then we have an election

And that, kids, is how the GOP was swept out of the Senate and the sitting US President was arrested for not leaving office when Democrat (insert name here) was inagurated.

Iraq military pre-iraq war:

Western military experts generally estimated that in early 2003, Iraq's armed forces were down to about 40% of their 1991 Gulf War levels, when they fielded some 1 million troops. International sanctions had kept Iraq from maintaining or modernizing outdated weapons and equipment, and Iraqi soldiers lacked training in modern techniques of war.

So about 400,000 troops with outdated ill-maintained equipment and 1800 run down tanks. No naval forces to speak of

Iran Military now

Land based:

873,000 military personnel
roughly 300 combat aircraft some new
1600 combat tanks
2300 armored fighting vehicles
2700 artillery pieces
1900 rocket launchers

Naval

6 frigates
3 corvettes
34 submarines
88 coastal vessels

Oil production:

enough to supply themselves PLUS sell on foreign markets

So yes a much harder fight. Their submarines could paralyze shipping
