A HUGE lawsuit filed Friday by the attorney generals of more than 40 states accuses the nation's largest generic drug manufacturers of conspiring to inflate prices, by as much as 1,000 percent. The industry wide scheme affected the prices of more than 100 generic drugs. "We have hard evidence that shows the generic drug industry perpetrated a multi-billion dollar fraud on the American people," said Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, who led the probe into the companies' conspiracies, "We have emails, text messages, telephone records, and former company insiders that we believe will prove a multi-year conspiracy to fix prices and divide market share for huge numbers of generic drugs. The suit names 20 major drug manufacturers, including Pfizer, Teva, Novartis, and Mylan, and more than a dozen senior executives accused of deleting evidence after the states began their investigation in 2014.

Sixty Minutes covered this story last Sunday. A program used to track illegal drug dealers put the legal drug company telephone calls and emails together in time with price fixing and market rigging.

Capitalists can't ignore monopolist opportunities, no matter how illegal.
