Stephen Collinson: It seems a crazy idea that any president would actually want to be impeached. But Donald Trump has so subverted Washington logic with his wild, norm-crushing presidency that there is now a serious conversation -- at least among Democrats -- about whether he views the ultimate constitutional crisis as a weapon in his re-election campaign.

Prize fighters do the same thing, even though they're really shaking in their boots.

Given the fact that I believe Cheetolini is crazy, this isn't too far fetched, but I agree with Professor Tribe- whether he wants it or not, the Democrats have to take the initiative and impeach Trump, because the GOP can't be trusted to do the right thing.

The Democrats certainly have enough evidence to start the impeachment process now. They just don't have the leverage in the Senate yet to get a conviction.

Without a conviction, Trump will brag that he won. Give him another four years and America will end up with its first King.

Anything that Trump tries to encourage you to do...Question.

Obviously he thinks it is a "trick". And that the People will like him more like they did with Bill Clinton.

Donald Trump is no Bill Clinton. And Congress does not even have to succeed in impeaching (which they are afraid of). Congress has a right to the full unredacted report and Donald Trump's taxes. All they need to do is keep up the pressure and keep Diabolical Don Delaying Justice and Obstructing Congress by Abusing his Power and not crack.

Right up until 2020.

It will be tough but it will make for excellent campaign ads.

If Heir Humpy manages to hold out and delay and obstruct Congress until 2020 without exploding or going completely off the rails it will be a minor miracle.

The question is often asked, "Can the Senate refuse to hold the trial?

Before the arguments about the Senate rules of impeachment start, let the above link be your guide.

Twin, I have posted the same link.

Short answer, the Senate shall commence trial the day after the House presents the articles of impeachment.

McConnell has no discretion to refuse to bring this to the floor.

RIGHT/CENTER

I know that. I read the rules. But you know how this place explodes with misinformation that evolve into ridiculous arguments based on opinions and other stuff.

A conviction takes a 2/3rds vote and as I said above, the Democrats don't have that kind of leverage yet.

Anything less than a conviction would just feed Trump's persecution meme come November 2020.

When to pull the trigger on Trump has to be well timed and spot on. He's trying to egg the Democrats into acting now because he knows he has the Senate in his pocket. And he's blocking the investigations because he wants to maintain that status quo. He can't afford to start a Republican exodus from the Senate once they're forced to hear impeachable testimony. And those won't be the only ears listening either.

After which they "advise and consent" not to convict.

That could very well be, but fear of that can't let that stop the Dems from starting proceedings, if they have a competent prosecutor they could make it pretty hard not to convict.

You don't think it's an absolute certainty?

They are scared -------- of "Rocking the Boat" over anything. I really don't understand why.

Nothing is absolute, and if public sentiment turns, so will the Senate.

I really don't understand why.

Because they want to keep their jobs above everything.

Not in time to be relevant for this.

Fair point.

Not in time to be relevant for this.

I think a lot of people would be surprised how quickly the public can turn if they are shown compelling evidence in the right way.

Because the Senators want to keep their jobs and more GOP seats are up in 2020 than Democrat seats, 67 could be in reach.

Trump isn't smart enough to lay an impeachment trap.

Besides, he is blocking the full Mueller report from being released because of his illegal actions just wait until the impeachment bunny shows up bringing gifts to America.

Impeachment will be the Full Mueller report on steroids.

Against the bombastic --------- the carnival barker in chief throws around all day? I have little faith in the public.

#20 | Posted by REDIAL at 2019-05-13 11:52 PM | Reply

REDIAL called it like it is. The "public" has been looking at compelling evidence for the past couple years and the Senate still hasn't budged. By now Trump should already have a stake in his heart.

Lol.

Trump has a 91% approval rating among Republicans, which has only been climbing since the Mueller Report came out. And we're supposed to think that people like Lindsay Graham and Cocaine Mitch are suddenly going to be held accountable for gargling Trump's balls? Get real.

#22 | Posted by JOE at 2019-05-14 06:31 AM | Reply

JOE is right.

Trump's Senate may be aware of their oath of office but they're even more aware of where their bread is buttered.

If we want to get rid of Trump, a conviction by 2/3rds of the Senate right now is a pipe dream. Trump will shout WINNER from the rooftops while he plays the persecuted martyr role and gets himself re-elected for another four ballbusting years.

All Hail King Donald! (if that's what suits your fancy)
