Heather Digby Parton: If Democrats are too craven to impeach Trump for his crimes, no future president will ever need to respect the law. So far the Democratic majority has balked at doing that because they believe it presents too big a risk, that the Clinton impeachment worked against the GOP, that the Dems will be punished for "overreaching", that Trump will become much more popular in an impeachment battle, etc. But the most common excuse is that impeachment would simply be too divisive and the country just can't deal with that.

This Salon article makes the best argument I have seen why, regardless of the political risks that we face, we must impeach Cheetolini, even if the Senate doesn't convict.

Failing to try would ultimately be much worse for our Country than trying and having the Senate bail out the Criminal in Chief.

Hearings are essential to getting many to understand what has gone on. Put another way, otherwise 36 percent will still believe Mueller exonerated the orange sloth

Exactly, if the Democrats in Congress care at all about the rule of law, they need to start impeachment proceedings, that way the can get the unredacted report, all the evidence and then hold televised preliminary hearings to their heart's content before having what will be a slam dunk impeachment vote.

But as Wizard Sleeves like Corky constantly whine:

"[T]he most common excuse is that impeachment would simply be too divisive and the country just can't deal with that."

The reason RoCheney supports Dems walking out on the shaky branch of immediate impeachment is the hope that somehow his beloved Republican Party will show some balls like these lawyers have and somehow mitigate the fact that they created this monster as Leader of their Party.

Good luck with that.

There's no real hurry at the moment. Mueller has yet to testify, the state of NY has yet to weigh in, and given enough rope, Trump is likely to hang himself.

I've said all along impeachment is the right thing to do, double-edged sword of dividing the country and solidifying Trump's supporters that it might be, but rwingers like RoCheney are merely pushing Trump's agenda talking points of "bring it on!" bravado... and again, there's no real hurry at the moment.

Wow, you really are as dumb as you look....

It has quickly gotten to the point where not impeaching may be politically expedient and morally corrupt.
Politicians, though, will weigh how much good can be accomplished if they win the moral battle of impeachment but lose the political war of winning the election. Nothing is simple these days.
POSTED BY CORKY AT 2019-05-03 02:57 PM

Should be no problem then to for Congress to prove Obstruction of Justice in an Impeachment Hearing... they can even bring in these prosecutors.
POSTED BY CORKY AT 2019-04-26 01:31 PM

- I agree that the obstruction evidence is enough to commence impeachment proceedings (RoCotton)

ROFL! And after all those months you spent telling us there wasn't enough evidence to support impeachment hearings.
Trump makes fools out of a lot of people, even those he's never met. And wouldn't piss on if they were on fire if he did. Even if he needed to take a piss.

TFF, none of those links say that you think impeachment is "the right thing to do", you continue to equivocate with "nothing is simple" and "it should be no problem."

I have been consistent throughout the investigation: I didn't think that Mueller would find enough evidence for Conspiracy but that Trump's real problem lay with obstruction and the SDNY investigations.

If they do nothing with all the proof we already know then our system is dead and we will lose freedom soon after

Aside from the fact that there is enough evidence to commence impeachment proceedings without further ---------- hearings by that idiot Nadler, this is exactly correct: the easiest way to get all the evidence and make the GOP Senators accountable for defending Trump is by officially starting the process to impeach Trump.

I'm not buying the weaselly cries that impeachment proceedings, if the Senate won't convict, would drive independent voters to Trump, I think that the more light that is put on the process the more likely the middle will be tired of the freakshow that is the WH and its current inhabitant.

Agreed, which is why the Democrats should start proceedings even if they are sure that they will fail in the Senate, since if there are no consequences for executive overreach then what will stop Trump or a successor from even worse actions in the future?

I hate to agree so much with ROC, but I do. I'm just wondering what's up your sleeve. We need to impeach. The facts will prove to be self-evident and I want the entire Senate on the record forever. Despite the setbacks, humanity generally moves forward. The only question is: what's in it for you to impeach ROC? It's not like these policies are antithetical to the GOP, and you obviously know the status-quo is destructive to the Republic. What makes you "Right of Center" these days?

So his crime is being a sekrit Russian spy? Have any of you read what The Hill and other non-partisan sites have to say? The three hundred pages by Mueller to say "No collusion, no obstruction".

Barr wrote four pages.

And the foreign governments involved are also starting to confess. The last one I read was in the left-wing Guardian, about the GCHQ wiretapping everyone on his team plus Trump Tower.

You know who's going down? All you damn traitors. For treason. That's a capitol offense. That was a coup attempt and you can't save your necks.

Except with another 4 years of Trump, humanity won't move forward.

I lean in favor of impeachment. But i don't pretend for a second that Senate Republicans are actually going to vote to convict, or that there won't be a Trump media blitz calling this a "coup." When he comes out the other side with a higher approval rating than he has today, he'll have people like ROC to thank.

First part totally wrong, last part totally correct.

I don't cotton to no treason. And we got some trials coming up in a few days. AG and IG working on it. I heard Comey would be first in just a few days, and Brennan in a month. Minor actors might not get death, but some seem to deserve it. Up to a judge and jury. You read what they wrote in the The Hill and the Guardian, right? That's the first time I've ever heard of the Hill making a retraction. They actually apologized for believing in RussiaGate, and now want justice. And they are looking deep into it.

People here had to suffer through all that eye bleed once, no need to repeat as they've all seen you make excuses for Republican policy and Republican leaders ad nauseam.... and I do mean nauseam.

- the likelihood of it happening decreases by the day.

Which would be a good thing for the country if Mueller's public testimony and all the 20 odd other investigations are enough to make Trump irrelevant next year.

You silly premise that Dems have some duty to impeach the monster your party created given the consideration it deserves.

If he deserves impeachment, which he does, let's hear Mitch McConnell demand it. Otherwise, Republicans should stop trying to run the Dem party... given how badly they've managed their own.

IMO, if Pelosi fails to at least initiate impeachment proceeding, history will judge her harshly. This level of Executive contempt and obstruction of Congress must be confronted, or our Constitutional system of checks and balances is dead.

The problem with politicians and political enthusiasts is that they tend to view challenges exclusively through political lenses. When it comes to Society and the Foundations of our government, challenges arise which transcend political expediency and should not be addressed with political goals as the only concern. Don't allow short term political gain to become the 'tree' that causes us to lose sight of the 'forest'.

#42 | Posted by moder8 at 2019-05-14 02:59 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

If it becomes necessary, Pelosi, having more balls than RoC and Trump combined, will pull the trigger on impeachment.

It just isn't necessary yet, and all of RoCheney's touting of Trump's Talking Points of "bring it on" isn't going to change that.

Let's hear from Mueller in public testimony and see some NY state indictments/revelations that would better prepare the country to accept impeachment as more than just partisan politics.
