Renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro actually outpaced coal generation, per data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and an analysis by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. That's never happened before. It's a landmark moment for renewables; no one can say that they can't compete with traditional fossil fuel energy sources anymore.

LOL

It would be more impressive is "renewables" actually grew, instead of staying flat. Rather than coal actually decreasing.

Next Up: California launches an investigation as to why electricity prices skyrocket.

We're making coal great again! See?

Here in Okiehomie 25% of electricity is generated via wind power. The local newspaper tried to gaslight readers by claiming that wind power isn't effective because those giant "fans" don't cool the atmosphere. You know, like the fan in your house. Seriously...

Remove the subsidy.

So you're saying that it's somehow a bad thing that Americans are using less electricity, eh? For years there have been programs to reduce energy consumption, including producing more efficient appliances, moving to LED lighting, developing smart-buildings, better insulating our homes including installing double-pane windows, and in the northern climes, triple-pane, etc. We should all be celebrating the fact that Americans have heeded the call for reducing their use of energy, not lamenting the fact that the increased use of "renewables" was not more impressive than what it was.

Remove the coal subsidy? Good idea!

And I suppose that you're implying that the fossil fuel industries in this country are NOT being subsidized, eh? Ever heard of 'depletion allowance'? How about those tax dollars Trump has already spent promoting the Keystone XL pipeline or 'clean' coal?

really it's all about storage and about scalable storage. i was just watching a video about liquid metal batteries that shows lots of promise.

Renewables Beat Coal in Historic First

It was going to happen at some point....

Good!

The only fossil fuel I burn is republicans.

All power is solar power. Some, like coal and oil are from the sun affect on the growth of organisms hundreds of thousands of years ago. Hydro is from rain that only occurs because of the sun. Wind is from the affect of sun on our air.

The only fuel that is not from the sun is nuclear. But nuclear is the reaction that causes the sun to shine. So even nuclear is solar.

Solar panels take out the middle man. And wind takes out most of the middle men.

Ehhh... "Nuclear power" is fission, which is the splitting of atoms, which does not occur to any significant degree within the sun. The sun is powered by fusion, which is combining atoms, which humans are currently incapable of using to sustainably produce power.

But I may be being pedantic.

This is a good thing and something that was going to naturally happen when aging coal plants were going to come offline.

As renewables continue to drop in price and increase output/$$, the dirtier sources of power worldwide will go the way of the lamplighter and milkmen.
