Russia is one step closer to creating its own, independent internet -- at least legally speaking. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law new measures that would enable the creation of a national network, able to operate separately from the rest of the world, according to documents posted on a government portal on Wednesday.

"According to CNN, the apparatus of China's internet control is considered more extensive and advanced than any other country in the world. The government authorities not only block website content but also monitor internet access of individuals. Such measures have attracted the nickname "The Great Firewall of China."

Putin is planning to cut off Russia and the lands they invade from reality.

Maybe this is why Rammstien put out the song "Radio".

It's all about what it was like growing up under Russian oppression and secretly listening to radio broadcasts from the free world.

"Putin is planning to cut off Russia and the lands they invade from reality."

Outside of what you directly see, hear and feel, "reality" is an artificial construct because you are relying on someone else to disseminate it for you.

@#2 ... the apparatus of China's internet control is considered more extensive and advanced than any other country in the world. ...

China has been doing it longer than anyone else.

However, what Pres Putin is doing is different than what China has done and is doing.

Pres Putin is removing Russia from the global Internet, making it totally self-dependent.

No other country is at that point or has said they want to be at that point.

In this new era of cyber-warfare, I look at what Pres Putin is doing as fortifying his defense, to make it more difficult for others to do to Russia what Russia does to the rest of the world.

Typical contingency operations. An Intranet has nothing to do with cutting people off from the Internet. America has one. China has one. Many countries have one. They just use different terminology to describe it. But, in the end regardless of scope/scale, they are all just creating an Intranet.

@#8 ... they are all just creating an Intranet. ...

In a sense, you are correct.

However, even most Intranets have outside dependencies.

The other countries you mention are not restricting/limiting those outside dependencies in the same manner that Russia is.

For example, in the United States Intranet you posit, I can still directly access and use DNS servers outside the US. With Pres Putin's Russian Intranet (as you call it), such access would not be allowed.

It is a fairly aggressive undertaking on Pres Putin's part.

But, it will not be a part of the world wide web.

So, I disagree. They are trying to create their own version of Reality. Just like Trump and Fixed News.

Control the flow of information and you control the people.

The people using that internet will not be able to control the technology... the technology will control them.

That is the whole reason for controlling information.

To control the people and preserve the rule of the Rulers.

That story is thousands of years old and goes back even beyond the Egyptian Civilization.

And now governments are getting more and more creative in manipulating the regulatory and political environment.. so as to control Information.

These method offers governments a less disruptive option for controlling the media, including the internet.

The governments in Turkey and Russia have been especially successful with this approach, engineering laws so they can compel internet service providers to remove offending content quickly.

Last month, Uganda began implementing a similar tactic, allegedly to discourage social media use, with the introduction of a tax on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

And if you do not know what is going on in China you better start paying attention.

Unless these things are contested and defeated now, what has unfolded in China might become an early preview of the way order is achieved and maintained in the cities of the 21st century, including us (being as how now that we are Great Again we are not "exceptional" anymore)
