Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Trump administration has embarked on a major public relations offensive to counter China's growing influence in Latin America. But, so far, the U.S. effort is failing miserably. Earlier this week, a new survey by the CADEM polling firm in Chile - one of the closest U.S. allies in Latin America - showed that 77 percent of Chileans have a positive image of China, whereas only 61 percent have a positive image of the United States. The same is happening in several other Latin American countries.

Most Latin American officials, while agreeing with the U.S. concerns about China, are not surprised by the decline of America's popularity in the region. The reason is simple, and it's called Donald Trump, they say. Meantime, much of what China has to do to gain influence in the region is to remain relatively quiet, and be visible. China's leader Xi Jin Ping has already visited the region four times since he took office in 2013.

It has to do with paying oil with dollars vs paying with yen. This was an issue about five years ago that started with the Chinese/Brazilian arrangement. The US accused China of currency manipulation.

"Everyone likes a spender ... just ask the Democrats."

The Republicans unnecessarily increased the defense budget by 5%

"But Politico reported on Sunday that following a Dec. 4 meeting with Mattis, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, Trump committed to a fiscal 2020 defense budget of at least $750 billion, a nearly 5 percent increase instead of a 2 percent cut."

That money will flow directly into the pockets of defense industry contractors who are just greedy pigs at the trough.

Well I know Paraguay does not even recognize China nor have relations with the Chinese. In fact, their President just concluded a State Visit to Taiwan. China still has quite a long ways to go.
