Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld announced Monday he is officially entering the race for president, becoming the first Republican to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 race. When asked about the President's historically high approval rating and whether Weld believes he can beat him in the primary, Weld said, "Yeah, I do."

Trump hates this man this morning more furiously than anyone, and that's saying a lot.

No one cares. This joke promised the Libertarian Party he would be a "libertarian for life" if they gave him the VP slot. Then he spent the last month of the race campaigning for Clinton.

You have no capacity to understand Trump.

Folks who don't understand the significance of this probably don't understand the strategic nuances of tic-tac-toe either.

Trump cultists don't. That includes you.

It'll be hilarious to see how few donations and votes he gets despite the number of Republicans who claim to lean libertarian and claim to be disgusted by Trump. Here's your opportunity, rightwingers. You gonna take it?

This guy should have been at the top of the ticket with that moron, Johnson.

So he kept his word and became one of maybe 4 republicans with any balls left. Of course you would be pissed about this, nulli. I don't remember which moron you supported in the primaries, but when trump became your Dear Leader, you were quick roll over and show your belly.

Weld has intelligence, experience, and decency. In other words, he stands no chance.

Weld will receive much more financial backing than folks think. If he forces Repubs to question their own support for Trump, Der Dotard will face a flanking action for months to come. If readers figure out that the Mueller Report points to criminality on the part of our sitting Crime Boss, Weld will be around for a year. Dems should send fomr $$$ Bill's way, just to keep things interesting...

I think you dramatically overestimate Republicans' willingness to peel themselves away from the Trump cult.

Weld will get contributions...from progressives trying to hurt Trump. Certainly not from libertarian party members who he stabbed in the back

This may open the door for other Republicans to challenge Trump. This could get interesting.

Bill Weld was a law partner at McDermott with one of my current partners, and by all accounts is a very upstanding and ethical guy. Since I am "decline to state" I can't vote in the Presidential Primary here in CA but would definitely vote for him over Donnie Little Hands.

To his credit, Weld is a genuine fiscal conservative. Something the GOP hasn't been for decades.

Every recent incumbent president with a primary challenger lost in the general election:

LBJ
Carter
George HW Bush

It's not that 'no Republican could beat Trump for the nomination'. Rather the truth is, 'no Republican actually interested or egotistic enough to run for the nomination can beat Trump'.

Note the difference between the capital L and the lower case l. It's very important, as any Lesbian knows.

"Then he spent the last month of the race campaigning for Clinton."

He really didn't.
