"I sure hope this isn't arson."

Witnesses describe a stocky, white male wearing a green tunic and with a large disfigured bulge behind his neck running from the cathedral with a Zippo lighter in one hand and a frayed rope in the other, shouting "who is the monster and who is the man?!?"

@#1 ... I sure hope this isn't arson. ...

Early reports (standard disclaimers apply) indicate it may have been caused by some renovation work that took a wrong direction.

Nice thing about stone structures is there's a chance the bulk of it will survive with a loss of the roof.

That's assuming it doesn't get hot enough to crack any of the stone arches and supports.

Need funds to fix church? Ask the Vatican for money.

My old church sought money from us members. We were told half the money would go to our church and half to the cardinal.

Liar.

Raise $10k. The first half went to cardinal. The next half to church, any extra to cardinal.

Left thieves to their own devices.

Such a shame. I was lucky to have spent time in France decades ago and naturally, in Paris, I visited Notre dame and bought a beautiful water color of it from a local street artist and it is framed and hangs in my family's home to this day.

This is very sad. It was s beautiful church.

Also, Christ's crown of thorns were kept here.

The relics of the Passion presented at Notre-Dame de Paris include a piece of the Cross along with the Holy Crown of Thorns, and of all the relics at the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral, the Crown of Thorns is without a doubt the most precious and the most revered.

I just got off the phone with my Mom. She is 70 and a deeply devout Catholic and this is absolutely devastating to her-- she has visited Notre Dame more than a dozen times in her life, but her perspective is different than mine and pretty interesting (at least I think so)-- she told me that she has recently read about vandalism and arson of other Catholic churches in France. She thinks it is a pattern and seems set already thinking that "secular terrorists" did this and it wasn't an accident.

"The Crown of Thorns, worn by Jesus when he was mocked and crucified, was one of the great relics of medieval Christianity. It was acquired by Louis IX, king of France, in Constantinople in AD 1239 for the price of 135,000 livres - nearly half the annual expenditure of France.

Jean, duc de Berry (1340-1416) commissioned this elaborate reliquary to house just one of the thorns, which is mounted on a large sapphire in the centre."

Professional fire fighters called Trump's proposal impractical at best. Deploying the kinds of airplanes used to fight forest fires would be dangerous in an urban area, they said, noting that force of the water could knock the building down and threaten firefighters on the ground.

"The drop of water by air on this type of building could indeed result in the collapse of the entire structure," a French security agency tweeted.

Critics on Twitter called Trump's comment the epitome of second-guessing in the middle of a disaster.

"Thanks Fire Chief Bill," tweeted Michael Cohen, a Boston Globe columnist.

I agree - no matter what your thoughts are of the Catholic religion Notre Dame Cathedral is a master piece of architectural art and engineering all by itself. A marvel of construction especially given it is a 12th century cathedral. The skill and craftsmanship employed to build the original were amazing. It is arguably one of the most important buildings in Western Civilization history.

Honestly to see Notre Dame this was one of my main desires for going to Paris and we haven't made it there yet. Paris itself is not high on my list... There are amazing Cathedrals around Europe but this is one that stood out to me.

Your 'jump to conclusion' involving the Freemasons underlies a paradox: Should there be evidence of Freemasons causing the fire, said evidence should be taken into consideration that Freemasons do not exist as proof of their existence is an impossibility on its face. Hence, should there be evidence pointing to Freemason culpability, it's more likely than not that someone planted said evidence to frame Freemasons.

More camouflaged racism.

Zillionaires already pledged to donate billions to restore Notre Dame.

Zero dollars have been pledged to restore the Black churches burned down in Louisiana.

Children continue to live in dog cages but PETA continues to collect zillions for the same ten animals they used in a commercial 20 years ago.

And finally, you can be a whore, a porn starlet, and illegal immigrant but you too can also be the next First Lady. I wonder how many times donors lined up at the oval office just to grab her by the juicy for a campaign contribution of $150K? Rumor has it that Nancy Ray Gun gave donors oral sex when Ronnie Ray Gun campaigned for governor.
