Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, April 14, 2019

His hope for another major left for dead by most of golf, Tiger Woods won The Masters Sunday afternoon. It's the 43-year-old's 15th major and first since 2008. It is his first win at a major where he trailed entering the final day. He was still trailing Francesco Molinari by 2 shots after 11. The catalog of iconic father-son moments after a Woods triumph now includes this boisterous hug of his son Charlie, who is 10 and never had a chance before to see him win like this.

Good to see Woods get his power back. He's current T6, with -6 while the leading group is -7, he just has to outlast the others and keep up his play.

This thread's article only reported the standings after day two, which was Friday. After today's round, Tiger now sits tied for second, only two strokes behind the leader. He's playing a very consistent game, scoring 70, 68 and 67 for three rounds. Tomorrow could be a real test of his comeback effort, and doing it at the Masters just makes it that much more significant to say nothing of spectacular.

BTW, I used to work with Tiger's mother when she was a computer operator at our MCAUTO (McDonnell Douglas Automation) facility in Cypress, CA, which incidentally was located across the street from the Navy golf course where young Tiger first learned to play.

For an update of the leader-board and a site where you'll be able to track the score in realtime for tomorrow, the final day of play (weather permitting), go to:

Greatest comeback in sports history in the works this weekend. Scandal, divorce, rehab, four surgeries, a decade long winning drought. all in the public eye with every effort being critiqued and criticized by media and fans alike...this is historic. Final grouping about to be under way, let's see how these guys do when the old Tiger is staring them in the face.

Scandal, divorce,

We were talking about this in the office last week... would it have been a scandal if he was a bachelor? According to online articles, his body count is well over 200, but sources indicate that all those occasions were consensual as there were never reports of sexual harassment or assault like some other athletes.

If Tiger was unmarried...would we have ever read about how much he plays the field, off of the field?

"If Tiger was unmarried...would we have ever read about how much he plays the field, off of the field?"

No, it was because he was married with kids, and his image as a wonderful family man had been overhyped. Women who didn't like golf liked Tiger because of all the stories surrounding his family life, including with his father, but when the stories of his infidelity came out, those women identified with his cheated-on wife.

As to nuance and your right wing BS bubble, for instance, you don't even seem to understand the simple fact that 40 years of tax cuts haven't led to economic growth, only more debt and a middle class who've been falling behind while the wealthiest of Americans have prospered.

And you're more than willing to ignore Republican hypocrisy over their vaunted 'moral values' as witnessed on a daily basis with the advent of the narcissistic, devoid of empathy, divisive, easily proven liar who is Trump. "Woods Tears Up Augusta and Tears Down Barriers
By LARRY DORMANAPRIL 14, 1997

It has been 50 years, almost to the day, since Jackie Robinson broke down the racial barriers in baseball. Now, a last vestige has fallen in golf, brought down in record fashion here in the middle of the Old South, by a young man of color.

Tiger Woods, 21, who is of African and Thai heritage, today became the youngest golfer in history to win the Masters at the Augusta National Golf Club. In doing so he shattered myths and broke records and again altered the face of the game.

Woods's final round of 69 gave him a total score of 18-under-par 270, the lowest in the 61-year history of the event, breaking the record held jointly by Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd. His 12-stroke victory over Tom Kite, 47, was the widest margin ever in the Masters -- indeed, the widest in any major championship conducted in the United States -- and it made him the first man of African heritage to win a professional major championship.

This one, though, means the most to Woods, not merely for the remarkable way in which it was accomplished, but for its social significance. A black golfer did not play in the Masters until 1975. Augusta National had no black members until 1990 when Ron Townsend, a broadcasting executive, was admitted after a controversy over the lack of black members at Shoal Creek, where the P.G.A. Championship was played that year.

By winning today, Woods finished what other people had started.

''It means so much,'' Woods said. ''I'm the first, but I wasn't the pioneer. Charlie Sifford, Lee Elder, Teddy Rhodes, those guys paved the way for me to be here. I thank them. If it wasn't for them, I might not have had the chance to play here.''

Despite a stellar record, Sifford was never invited to play in the Masters. Elder was the first black man to play the event, in 1975. Rhodes never played on the PGA Tour because of a Caucasian-only rule that was not rescinded until 1960."

Despite a stellar record, Sifford was never invited to play in the Masters.

You know so little about the Masters, it has no color, no racial bounds, it is about rules to get invited and the rule is the top money earners in playing the game of golf get invited. Record doesn't count, it is playing certain events and earnings, that gets you the invite. Don't perform at the scheduled events you don't get invited. It's about golf performance, not race, not color, but pure performance through the year, that's why it is called the "MASTERS"

"Lee Trevino was one of the greats long before Woods showed up."

Tiger has always been in a league of his own. Or as Molinari put it: "It was golf on another planet.":

When Woods had his monster year in 2000, Francisco was starting his life as a university student. "He was not that much older than me, but he was the absolute idol for many of us -- he was Michael Jordan," Molinari said in a recent interview with GOLF.com. In other words, Woods played a game with which Molinari was unfamiliar. The young Italian was a pretty good amateur golfer who was getting better. Several years later, when he turned pro, Molinari signed with Nike, following Woods there. Nobody noticed.

When Woods dominated the U.S. Open at Pebble in 2000, Molinari noticed. He's one of the few people who can recall that Miguel Angel Jimenez, a sort of hero to many European golfers, finished in a tie for second that year, with Ernie Els. Woods finished 15 shots ahead of them. "It was ridiculous," Molinari said.

Then he saw it up-close, while wearing the heavy white polyester Augusta National caddie bib.

"To be there at Augusta [in 2006], to see him play from five yards away, was incredible," Molinari said in the interview. "The week before my brother won the U.S. Amateur, we never would have dreamed that a few months later we would be at Augusta National, paired with Tiger Woods. I was massively nervous, from the excitement. I was living a dream, walking the fairways of Augusta, looking at Tiger. He didn't play particularly well, but you could see he was completely different from everyone else. It was golf on another planet.

"He introduced himself on the first tee," Molinari said. "You laugh: ‘We know who you are.' After that, he was focused on his golf."

Not to take anything away from Tiger Woods, but he's actually a bit more Asian than African-American. His mother is from Thailand and his father was of mixed African-American, Chinese and some Native-American blood. When asked, Tiger describes his ethnicity as "Cablinasian" (a syllabic abbreviation he coined from
