Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Maybe it is binge-watching Alf that prompted me to ask.

Maybe it is Jade Warrior ( www.youtube.com ).

I dunno. But why are you here? Why do you spend time on this site?

Why do you take time out of your lives to post comments here?

OK, I'll comment first...

I come to this site to test and challenge the opinions I hold.

I have changed my viewpoint based upon the discussions I have had here.

Because it's a good place for aggregate news and I can't stay away from the comments section?

There are a few posters who's opinions I value and look for.

When I was a lad, I liked going to the zoo and watch all them critters do whatever critters do. I loved the monkeys a lot.

This is a free zoo. I come here to watch all them white monkeys and one oreo monkey do all sorts of flips and somersaults. The joy of my childhood comes back a little.

Because I like to express my opinions freely without fear of right wing a******s screaming in my face. I can express my utter contempt for them here without the fear of physical violence. I can remind them, over and over, about the errors in judgement that their views have allowed to happen and ask them to take responsibility for those errors in judgement even though I know they are incapable of ever confronting the harms they have allowed and encouraged to happen to our nation. Make no mistake, I come here to express my outrage about the mean spirited, evil, and idiotic things that the right has brought to America and I have yet to hear a decent defense for their history during the last 50 years. Millions are dead, thousands of Americans are dead, we owe trillions, billionaires just get richer while our middle class gets poorer while morons, who aren't billionaires, defend their positions and arguments with empty talking points gained from right wing hate radio and Fox News. My intention is just to, at least, be a thorn in their side and to remind them that some of us realize the truth about their politics and their motivations which aren't pure.

I first discovered this place in the summer of '04. I Googled "Drudge Report" and ended up here by accident.

This place is fun. As a community it has an interesting mix of people and viewpoints.

I like the debate. I like having my views challenged. I like learning from some of the smart people here and have changed my views on a few issues based upon the discourse here.

I really like it when, usually late at night, the conversation evolves from political to personal and a genuine conversation breaks out. In the "good old days" it happened a lot. Now, it's sadly kind of rare.

A few years ago I quit this site for a year and honestly, didn't really miss it. Yet, here I am back in the saddle...

Why did I come here? I accidentally typed "drudge" instead of "drudgereport."

Why did I initially sign up? I thought the dialogue could make a difference. And for the back page.

Why do I stay 16 years later? Masochism I suppose.

It was the week after spring break 2009 that I came here. I was bummed after coming back from the west coast to my dorm at UMD. I signed up after watching "The Empire Strikes Back" hence my DR name Nerfherder.

I came to hone my writing skills and to playfully troll a bit while I was doing so. I'm still working on my novel. It's about everything. I've been working on it for 7 years. It must be really good, right? In the immortal words of professor Dave Jennings: it's a piece of ----.

I have been more active during the W and President Bucket of ---- presidencies because, well, their actions tend to cause more anxiety. I had more confidence on the path of our country during Obama's years.

I too came because of an incorrect google search and damn, google must have been smarter than I was, bringing me here instead of that other place

As it's been posted by several others here, I come here to have me positions challenged by folks. There are some here who I enjoy a conversation with....but that number is dwindling. Some really good posters left this site or post very infrequently these days.

#22 | Posted by eberly at 2019-03-27 12:15 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

I also came here when there were only a handful of people on the site in May of 03 by mistakenly typing in Drudge.com and thought it was fun, but became hooked when I realized that I could challenge people's preconceived biases and not only help change their perspective but my own as well. That, and heckling Danni for her incredibly spiteful and narrow minded world outlook, of course. ☺

I can't speak for the other posters who are on my side of the spectrum but one of the things that makes this place special for me is that it is the exact opposite of an echo chamber for my views (like RedState would be) which would bore me to tears.

By being able to challenge and be challenged on my viewpoint, I think I have become better informed as a result.

If I had one request, it would be to have a yearly spoofing day where no logins were required and you could put any name after your comment, those days were awesome.

Thanks Rogers for putting up with all of us and of course, that whole vomit cleaning and peanuts thing.

My posting to the DR dropped significantly between 2009 and 2015, so you are wrong and I am right.

It picked up in 2015 because of the Presidential race and seeing that the Republicans were picking a bucket of ---- as their nominee caused me anxiety.

I admit my posts have gotten somewhat more strident in the past year or two, primarily because I am tired of reasoning with a bunch of ignorant hateful, "people". It really is a waste of breath to present facts to people who refuse to acknowledge them

You see stuff like people losing health insurance upsets me, climate change upsets me, a president that supports neo-nazis upsets me. I wonder about those that aren't upset by stuff like that.

Blogging is a form of communication, although in a difficult media, a means of self-expression. When I first posted here I hadn't written anything expressive for years. Of course, it was the Wild West here then and Mao used to punch me in the face a lot. Gal took pity on me... Rogers and Doc and a lot of other liberals loved the red meat for yellow dawgs.... we were glad of an outlet to express our dismay at the coming of Saint GW, the modern replacement for conservatism; a vapid sort of corporate nationalism which honored power and greed above all else.

And which has now become alt right Trumpism; a much more dangerous expression of authoritarian nationalism with all it's racist and xenophobic social divides that allows the moneyed interests to divide and conquer with disdain for most Americans while flowing even more wealth upwards.

Recently, however, I learned a better translation of a Hebrew saying from the old testament that Jesus quoted a lot. It is in the KJV 'Fret not'... usually translated as 'don' worry' in regards to the wickedness in high places of this world; the injustice, the unfairness we see... because God has their number and will one day dial them up. It doesn't mean don't protest or werk and speak against those things; the KJV has Jesus going around saying, "Be of good cheer!", when the better translation is 'Courage!' or 'Have courage!'.

The better translation of 'fret not' is 'don't fume' emotionally so that it only hurts you and your efforts, not those whom rightly you protest their values and their shortsightedness.

Anxiety, unlike the other issues you mention, to a greater and lesser degree, is a normal part of life. Excessive anxiety can be a medical disorder.
So, managing anxiety seems like a more appropriate description, imo, as one is managing a normal part of their life.

"I hear the term "battle" to describe people battling anxiety, depression, cancer, obesity, etc. all the time.
I never hear of someone managing cancer. I hear they are battling it."

As someone who had had to deal with both anxiety and cancer (as well as anxiety about cancer!), I would say people do tend to think in terms of fighting and beating cancer, but there has been a shift in recent years toward the meme of healing cancer. I'd say you try to manage or cope with anxiety, but I don't think you can permanently beat it or heal it (except maybe through a daily practice of radical acceptance?) because a certain amount of anxiety is an existential part of the human condition.

You know how I know this? I actually know some of these folks. I disagree with their support Trump. I have no problem with disagreeing them and utilizing civility. Now, on certain issues, civility is more of a challenge, to be sure.

To me, as the internet has matured, general news has been watered down. Most people are getting the thinned blurb of text for a story.
Increasingly, that feels like only half of what you need now. You want the story, and then you want the conversation.

There's other places that do this, but I do enjoy the 'everybody knows your name' atmosphere here (even if i don't post or visit as much as others).

I've always felt like this place had the vibe of a local hole in the wall dive bar. That kind of thing appeals to me; I'm not fancy like that.

Not just as connected, but I have said this from the start, Trump has openly admitted that he visited Epstein's island at least once so given his proclivities he is just as likely to have molested young women as Clinton. He also appears on at least one flight manifest, but if memory serves there were a few other fairly notable women on that flight for what it is worth. That being said, he seems totally unconcerned about any of it.

Those records will get unsealed, and when they do...let the chips fall where they may.

Jeff is a sexual predator, but it's okay, he's a Republican.

"I think the point, which you missed, is that whatever Jeff and I give a ---- about...it's consistent."

Consistent... in support of Nazis.

JeffJ defends Nazis speaking on campus because that's Freedom of Speech.

JeffJ defends armed marchers in Charlottesville because that's Freedom of Speech too.

JeffJ thinks doxing campus conservatives should be illegal. Even though doxing is simpiy speaking facts about people. Whatever happened to Freedom of Speech?

Not just as connected, but I have said this from the start, Trump has openly admitted that he visited Epstein's island at least once so given his proclivities he is just as likely to have molested young women as Clinton.

I think Trump is a bit more likely to be a predator like Epstein, given all the creepy things he's said about under-age girls (including his daughter!) and the time he boasted about walking into the dressing room at a teen beauty pageant he owned. That ---- is wrong on so many levels.

"I get Clinton was a womanizer. So were most our presidents, members of Congress, men in general. "

Sure. Predicable deflection. All of them do it

And then comes trump.....now, be offended and taken aback by such lude behavior.

I completely agree, and don't forget Trump's quote about Epstein in 2002:

"I've known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side."

Ick.

President Bucket of ----- bragging about grabbing women by the -----, bragging about walking into teen girl's dressing rooms while their dressing, saying he'll be dating a tween in 10 years, lusting over his own daughter is well beyond the pale. In a category all his own. Whatabout all you like, but I wouldn't have my daughter in the same building as that... thing.

Deflect all you want, that thing is sick.

some of President Bucket of ----- other sexual proclivities

thrice married
cheats on his wife with a porn star shortly after his wife gives birth to his child
cheats on this wife with a playboy model
accused of raping his wife
serial groper
forcing kisses on women
etc.

Citation necessary of anywhere I've posted stating I'm offended by Trump's statement.

You won't find one. Not even on this thread.

Typical eberly. Always arguing with yourself.

I get it, you want to be mad at me about something and somehow declare victory.

You're so eager for it!

Even Jeff had some lame attempt at something a few posts back. You two. You're so cute when you're desperate.

It fits his character. It's who he is. It wasn't in the slightest bit shocking to hear him brag about it. I didn't lose any sleep.

I find it funny people who consider themselves Christian would support him. I find it depressing conservatives have embraced him because he's willing to fill the courts with conservative judges. I don't understand why conservatives, through out history, strive to deny people civil rights and equality.

I am depressed by his destruction of the EPA. His administration's disregard for our environment is shortsighted and will have adverse reactions to our future.

But his remarks about being a sexual predator is who he is. Who he's grown up to be. His sons are just like him. Harvey Weinstein was probably just like them.

I come here because I am bored. I have to wait on computers and systems to load and reboot and do their thing and it helps me pass the time while I wait.

I am also a student of the Human Condition and I am studying the Human Brain and Consciousness when I am not at my day job. I see a lot of interesting Conditions represented here.

I enjoy interacting with them.

And when I see the cray cray things being repeated in the wild that I heard the crazies say here I know it's probably time to sit up and pay attention.

The Fixed News Hate Herd is moving again. One must be careful not get in it's way or be crushed by it.

It's a good thing I was paying attention when Humpy and his Deplorables threatened a government shutdown of 2 months or more. I knew they would do it being the hateful callous people they are I could see they would allow and encourage such a thing to happen. I learned how deep the hate goes here.

After reading he words of his Disciples here on the DR I knew Trump would be stupid enough to stupid enough to do it.

And there is no doubt in my mind any more. Especially after reading the comments here.

They are just that stupid.

It has been said,

The Mean people will not destroy the world.

The Stupid People will.

And Trump is both Mean and Stupid.

The odds are not in our favor.

Hahaha, just did a read through and this is a great thread by all commentators and interactions. I wish I could submit more threads and post more often. Sometimes I type something out, and just decide against getting into the fray. I don't visit this site at my current job, mostly because I wouldn't want the sysadmin to someday review my logs and see where I spend my online time - and the fine people I spend it with.

At the end of the day, this place feels a little bit like an online home, or cozy neighborhood bar. Sometimes, like a virtual version of 1984's five minutes of hate. This experience is what we choose to make of it.

Long time ago I found the site and one that made me think of staying.

Kanrei's departure makes me stay away.

If one person made me think specifically about an issue was LarryMohr and the treaty issue of the United Nations.

The US has broken treaties it wants to and the UN is one we need some breaking of chains. Where's Dany when you need her?

Someone clearly doesn't realize that the Frenchman in Holy Grail is heckling the utter stupidity of King Arthur and his knights in their fruitless quest for the Holy Grail.

Fitting, since those of us on the Right have been heckling the DR Left about their now fruitless quest for the Russian Collusion Grail

Henceforth, AU will be known as "Sir Robin"...

You're gonna need both hands to juggle that many balls.

Like many posters I also came here accidentally via search engine.

I come back because I feel that 99.99% of people are blind to reality, including myself.

It's definitely a family and we certainly argue like one.

When an important topic does arise there are several people I really, really look forward to reading - TonyRoma, GalTuesday among lots of you.

The righties, the lefties and the ambidextrous make this blog better than any other, imo.
