Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, March 19, 2019

Eric Kaufmann: We find this pattern across numerous issues. And taken as a whole, it reveals something about the United States in the Trump era: The country is not divided by racial conflict, but by conflict over racial ideology. This is a crucial difference -- and it is also grounds for optimism.

Why the big change? Why the change by white educated liberals?

#1 | Posted by AndreaMackris at 2019-03-19 01:41 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

When it comes to some people seeing more racism, the rise of the cell phone camera gave everyone a chance to see video evidence of what black folks have been saying for decades. When confronted with undeniable evidence reasonable people usually do the reasonable thing and adjust their views accordingly.

Also, as an added benefit, rednecks stopped claiming to have been abducted by UFOs so often once everyone started carrying a high definition cameras on them at all times.

The NY Times chart is crap? Are the survey results they reported fake news?

Why the big change?

Why are you concerned with an increase in the number of people who disagree with a statement that equivocates the plight of American Italians with the plight of American slaves?

I disagree. Think what they mean. The first one was a bit confusing at first. As for the second one think of how the question's interpretation changed when the discussion on the subject changed. I still think illegal immigration is a big issue - but not for the same reasons as the GOP claims it is an issue.

Actually the problem is our disagreement on reality. Many folks in this country live in their own fantasy. And you can't fight fantasy.

The way I read it, it says white liberals oppose any special help given to minorities to help them stronger than white conservatives and that white conservatives have not opposed special help for minorities virtually at all since the 1990's while white liberals do oppose it. And, if my understanding of it is correct the chart is utter nonsense, now if I have misread the chart then I would welcome a correction to my interpretation of it.

Yes you have misinterpreted the article. Since it doesn't reinforce your closely held preconceived bias you should reject it.

That's just baloney.

Actually, what is significant about the article and the graphs is not the percentages that now exist for white liberals but the correlation of the dates and radical increase in their disagreement with those statements with the election of Donnie Little Hands, especially when compared with the relative stability of black respondents to those same statements and then an actual decline between 2014 and 2016. What that confirms is that the white liberal establishment is using racial identity as a political football because of Trump.

It's unfortunate for The Narrative that the NYT confirms what those of us on the DR Right have been pointing out on a daily basis.

"What that confirms is that the white liberal establishment is using racial identity as a political football because of Trump"

YEAH!

Because "liberals" went apocalyptic when "conservatives" elected the first Black President

"The NY Times chart is crap? Are the survey results they reported fake news?"

FYI: It's not the NY Times' chart. The chart was posted in the NYT as part of an op ed piece. The source of the chart is clearly listed, although it is not clear who Zach Goldberg of GA State University is:

"By The New York Times | Source: analysis of General Social Survey by Zach Goldberg, Georgia State University"

Trump is a racist and a white nationalist.

I found Goldberg and his dissertation analysis mentioned here:

The Democrats' Left Turn Is Not an Illusion

Among white liberals, according to Pew survey data collected in 2017, 79.2 percent agreed that "racial discrimination is the main reason why many black people can't get ahead these days." 18.8 percent agreed that "blacks who can't get ahead in this country are mostly responsible for their own condition," a 60.4 point difference, according to a detailed analysis of the Pew data provided the Times by Zach Goldberg, a doctoral candidate in political science at Georgia State University.

Goldberg, the doctoral candidate at Georgia State University, has documented the changing character of the Democratic electorate in a working paper, "The 2016 Election and the Left's Lurch Left."

Using American National Election Studies data, Goldberg found that among white liberal women, the share identifying themselves as "feminist" rose from 45 percent in 1992 to 83 percent in 2016. For white liberal men, the percentage saying they were feminists grew from 34 to 59 percent.

The same pattern emerges on a host of specific issues. Take the case of immigration: 40 percent of Democrats and 50 percent of liberals surveyed by ANES supported increasing the level of legal immigration, which Goldberg reported to be "the highest proportion on record."

Actually I think what it indicates there is a severe bias in the questions themselves. They are ambiguous and dependent on the way words are being used at that moment in time.

#17 | Posted by GalaxiePete at 2019-03-20 01:41 PM | Reply

Others using the American National Election Studies (ANES) data Goldberg uses come to different conclusions:

It's clear that prejudice did play an outsize role in helping Trump to victory. A raft of quantitative data across multiple studies all indicate that racism is strongly correlated to support for Trump. The 2016 [American] National Election Study showed that racially discriminatory attitudes more closely corresponded to Trump votes than any other factor. The sum total of the evidence clearly indicates that Republican voters as a whole are motivated by "cultural anxiety," a loose euphemism for racial, gendered, and religious prejudice. Much of this backlash is driven by white voters who are fearful of being displaced by immigrants, and who say that they now feel like "strangers in their own country."

Here's another analysis of the 2016 ANES data from April 2017 in the WaPo*:

Racism motivated Trump voters more than authoritarianism

Let the analyses begin. Last week, the widely respected 2016 American National Election Study was released, sending political scientists into a flurry of data modeling and chart making.
Did racism affect the voting?

Many observers debated how important Trump's racial appeals were to his voters. During the campaign, Trump made overt racial comments, with seemingly little electoral penalty. Could the unusual 2016 race have further affected Americans' racial attitudes?

Since 1988, we've never seen such a clear correspondence between vote choice and racial perceptions. The biggest movement was among those who voted for the Democrat, who were far less likely to agree with attitudes coded as more racially biased.

Again, it's not "The Narrative that the NYT". It's an op-ed published in the NYT that was based in part on analysis from doctoral dissertation.

That's your opinion. Others see things differently:

"It's clear that prejudice did play an outsize role in helping Trump to victory. A raft of quantitative data across multiple studies all indicate that racism is strongly correlated to support for Trump. The 2016 [American] National Election Study showed that racially discriminatory attitudes more closely corresponded to Trump votes than any other factor." (#18)

IOW, maybe racists don't think they are racist.

"Since 1988, we've never seen such a clear correspondence between vote choice and racial perceptions. The biggest movement was among those who voted for the Democrat, who were far less likely to agree with attitudes coded as more racially biased." (#19)

IOW, maybe Democrats are less likely to buy into Trump's race-baiting rhetoric.

I'm talking about the identity politics narrative ("The Narrative"), as yet again pushed in both #18 and 19 that this dissertation addresses, the NYT is only publishing the Op-Ed to confirm what the DR Right has been pointing out each time The Narrative is trotted out.

This is the unspoken message behind Nicholas Kristof's seven-part series "When Whites Just Don't Get It."

Are those analyses "pushing" the narrative or is the dissertation analysis "denying" it? We already know the DR Right is invested in denying it for multiple reasons.

Which corroborates his claim of actually being a lawyer. Intellectual dishonesty is not inappropriate when it faithfully advances your client's interests in an adversarial setting.
