Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, March 19, 2019

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new law which will allow the punishment of individuals and online media for spreading what Russia calls "fake news" and information which "disrespects" the state. The new rules allow prosecutors to direct complaints about material considered insulting to Russian officials to the government, which can then block websites publishing the information. Publications that repeatedly spread "unreliable" information which undermines social order, may face fines of up to $23,000, and repeat offenders could spend time in jail, according to the Washington Post.

"Matthew Rojansky, director of the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute, told NPR the new laws in Russia are "politically significant" because the Internet "remained a relatively free space for political expression, including oppositional to the regime, even as the state media, and all other forms of media, be it print, or television, or radio, were largely shut down by the state, over the last 20 years."

Trump would cream Ivanka's jeans if he had this kind of power.

Anyone besides me think that Putin did this, in part, in order to goad Trump into something?

The problem of Fake News will be worked out in civil court in the US.

It looks like Russia is going the same way as China, as far internet control goes. Local ISPs will be responsible for policing content, blocking users who get out of line and reporting repeat offenders. But access to foreign porn sites will still be readily available.

#3, no Zed, it's just you. Putin is just trying to emulate the Chinese' autocratic control over the flow of information, and may actually be more successful at it because of the the lower population density in Russia.

This is EXACTLY what America needs; however, the government has no business being the prosecution. It should be a completely social architecture that excludes government influence, and shouldn't be due to opinion but criteria that are voted on and used to find ways to penalize outlets who continue to spread hate and biased information (publicized as fact).

Per the quote in #1, Putin may be shutting off a relief valve that has protected him from losing any more popularity than he has already.

This could be the proverbial straw that broke the Ruskie camel's back.

Reading Trump's tweets over the past weekend, it is obvious he would like to do the same thing here in the US.
