Decades of studying primates has convinced me that animal politics are not so different from our own -- and even in the wild, leadership is about much more than being a bully.

Actually I like the way most animals raise their progeny... the ones that do raise them... and the not the ones that eat them.
In general they don't spank... but they will clip them if they are out of line and need reining in. They are not vengeful with their discipline like humans often are... at the same time they don't resist a swift kicking to the curb when appropriate... usually one whack suffices.

There is mounting evidence that the relationship between DNA and the environment we're raised in are dynamically shaping each other. There are foxes which Russians have selectively bred for eight generations which begin to exhibit dog like faithful friendly behaviors. The result is that those raised violently become violent adults and those raised in a more supportive manner exhibit similar behaviors as adults. A Canadian scientist spent ten years testing rats and found that the amount of licking a mother provided didn't just result in mimicking behaviors, but it reshaped the rat's DNA in consistent ways. Similarly (or oppositely), how you are raised as a child can alter your DNA.

This fact opens the door to many ethical questions, including social engineering within our public school system. We are on the cusp of being able to raise more honest, co-operative, peaceful and possibly even more creative citizens, just by changing the way children are treated in public schools. Look no further than the Mormons to site on example on a human level! Or would that be just like "Stepford Wives"?
