From a policy standpoint, the single most important thing about former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort's sentencing on Wednesday in federal court is an observation from his lawyers: He never even would have ended up charged under normal circumstances.

"and I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling special counsels"

The most elite of all elite arguments, for you fascist populists out there.

"most white collar criminals don't get caught." is not a defense.

So Trump is draining the swamp after all.

Its because they look good... blue collar criminals don't look good... and the ones that can manage to clean themselves up nicely for a court hearing get lighter sentences.

Manafort's lawyer: "He never even would have ended up charged under normal circumstances."

Or end up getting caught either ... except these are not normal circumstances. And Manafort was so arrogant that he left a trail that even a blind man with a white stick could follow.

Strange, isn't it, that white collar criminals are never sorry until AFTER they get caught. (sob, sob) Makes me wonder what they're really sorry for.

Best of luck to the SDNY. Too bad they can't fry him.

By "don't get caught" he means pay the catchers to pretend they couldn't catch them.

"Manafort's Lawyers Argue that Most White Collar Criminals Don't get Caught"

You don't say! How many does he know of? He should name names, it might help his client earn an early release.

The idea that under normal circumstances he wouldn't have been caught is a good indication of how bad things are under normal circumstances.

Or maybe that's just me.
