Apparently addressing the fatal crashes involving two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft within months of each other, President Trump suggested going back to a "simpler" time because planes are becoming too technical for pilots to fly and he doesn't want Albert Einstein to have to man the controls.

What was that Sir? I was busy dialing in a VOR radial for the non-precision approach.
The good 'ol days require increased minimums to land but you like Motel 6 that is 50 miles away in a town without taxicab service.

Donny Bonespurs needs to push (again) for his personnel pilot to head the FAA. He only hires the best (except for those who have been indicted).

Trump will sign an emergency declaration making American planes much simpler (and cheaper) to fly. They will be stripped down to two wheels fashioned from a re-purposed radio flyer wagon, two wings made of OSB, a tail made with a couple 2x4s and a piece of kite-string, a Shaker-style ladder-back chair for the pilot, and a propeller fashioned from a scrap of sheet metal, attached to a steering wheel via a long rubber band, which will be pre-twisted on the runway by ground crew prior to take-off.

Maybe he should stop flying and save us taxpayers some money then.

Perhaps we should replace Air Force One with a DC-3. This should give Dotard a real sense of security.

What happened?
In 2017, Trump was very strict on commercial air travel and there were no crashes.

He is not entirely wrong. Complex systems are inherently more fragile and vunerable, and more open to both error and attack. It's a well understood axiom in systems engineering. There are loads of academic treatises on the subject.

If, for example, the new automated anti-stall system in the Max 8 were to blame for both crashes, Trump would actually be right in a way. I hate his guts but even i can acknowledge that.

What's crazy is that if he believes that, why is he apparently letting Boeing dictate whether we ground the planes?

Especially when the manufacturer and airlines conspire to not require pilots to be adequately trained on the new systems.

Airplanes don't kill people. Greedy CEO's do.

A little uncomfortable fact for those who know little of what goes on in the cockpit of the plane they are riding in. The pilots aren't doing much at all. They are in control of the plane on take off and landing and seldom any other time. The auto pilot and a bank of computers fly the air craft. Within a decade the jet you ride in will do the only two things the pilots do now. Another little scary fact for y'all, the pilot's controls are not connected to any thing but a circuit. All those craft have been fly by wire for the last 40 years.

"A little uncomfortable fact for those who know little of what goes on in the cockpit of the plane they are riding in."

Its not uncomfortable if they don't take scaremongers like you seriously. Over the past fifty years, pilot error as a cause of a crash has been the case around 60% of the time. Seeing that there are more and more flights and less and less fatalities over that 50 year period, pilots are better equipped to handle the issues they may face in the cockpit than one 50 years ago. I don't go into an aircraft expecting every pilot to be another Sully, but I go into each aircraft knowing that there are several safety nets both in the air and on the ground to deal with most issues that may occur.

More "complex" aircraft perhaps have saved thousands of lives over the past 20 years.
But of course when 1 goes down (as they invariably will, being made of things that are heavier than air), there will be those who scream they are too complex.

Reminds me of those who scream about the necessity of vaccinations, not remembering the recent past where millions of people were crippled and/or dead because of things like Polio (which three of my 72 year old mother's older siblings had).

#36 | Posted by NerfHerder, I remember an outbreak of polio back in my home town when I was a kid, it was a summer I spent indoors. My mom almost died of scarlet fever in 1942. Some of her aunts and uncles died from typhoid and cholera. The days when people died from disease that are prevented by a vaccinations or treatment are not far removed from us. Live without clean water or sewage disposal and they are lurking to claim new victims as the homeless have proven. Go without bathing or wear dirty clothing, and you will get lice. Get lice and you run the risk of an old disease called Typhus.

The complexity is often the result of adding multiple redundant systems. The first rule of engineering is avoid any single point of failure.

Always have backups for the backups for the backups.

#44 | Posted by donnerboy at 2019-03-14 11:17 AM | Reply

Without the complexity Trump is complaining about there would have been many more crashes in the last 20-30 years. If every plane had to be landed by stick every thunderstorm would claim a few flights.

#45 | Posted by hatter5183 at 2019-03-14 03:31 PM | Reply

#43 Complexity is different than redundancy. Example: manual flight controls are simple. Dual manual flight controls is simple and redundant. Fly by wire with autopilot and TCAS is complex.
