Rich people want to send their kids to elite schools and are willing to pay for it. And people working at elite schools are willing to accept money to allow the children of rich people to attend. I'm shocked.

I believe that so much of what is interpreted as race based bias is actually class financial based bias. Disproportionately high numbers of wealthy Asians result in disproportionately high numbers of Asian kids being accepted at elite schools. Disproportionately low numbers of wealthy Latinos result in disproportionately low numbers of Latino kids being accepted at elite schools. The exception always being the true cream of the cream which will always be admitted anywhere.

I read through some of the indictment today, it was pretty astonishing. This was more than just your average "give donation to school, kid gets in" scheme. A conspirator-turned-informant had been soliciting money from rich parents, then bribing a corrupted ACT/SAT proctor to redo kids' exams when they were done to get them elite scores. He would also create fake athlete profiles and bribe corrupted athletics officials to "recruit" kids who weren't athletes.

Reading, writing and arithmetic are "the liberal way"?

"... you get people wanting to send their kids to private schools."

A History of Private Schools & Race in the American South

[snip] Private schools in the South were established, expanded, and supported to preserve the Southern tradition of racial segregation in the face of the federal courts' dismantling of "separate but equal." White students left public schools in droves to both traditional and newly formed private schools. From 1950 to 1965 private school enrollment grew at unprecedented rates all over the nation, with the South having the largest growth.

#51 | Posted by eberly at 2019-03-13 02:24 PM | Reply

"This was more than just your average "give donation to school, kid gets in" scheme."

The give a donation scheme is actually a pretty good deal. Harvard (and maybe others) ensures that students accepted to the school will attend, whether they can pay the tuition or not. They're able to do this because some rich guy pays the school far more than the cost of tuition to ensure that his kid is accepted. This works out for the school, who can then accept qualified students based on academic merit regardless of income. It also ups the academic integrity of the school, since these attendees are accepted on merit. It also works out well for the student who otherwise couldn't afford to attend one of these schools.

That's not what happened here though. Maybe I'm an ass, but what I see here is rich parents, who had every opportunity to give thier kids the upper hand through private schools tutors, preparatory courses, and more, making a last ditch effort to get thier kids into good schools after those kids pissed their opportunities away.

Which is why we have an open enrollment policy here in California. But then we can get away with that since public schools in California do NOT depend exclusively on local property taxes to fund their budgets. Less than 32% of the public school budgets depend on local property taxes, the majority comes from the state with a small percentage coming from Washington.
