The U.S. trade deficit grew to $621 billion in 2018, its highest level since 2008, according to a Commerce Department report released Wednesday that was delayed by the government shutdown. President Trump has made reducing the nation's trade deficit -- especially with China -- a major goal of his administration. However, the report showed a record-breaking $891.3 billion trade gap for the U.S. in goods and services and a trade deficit with China for goods that hit a record $419.2 billion.

You won't see any of the usual Trump supporters in this thread. (Especially not the ones who claim they don't support him, all the while supporting everything he does.)

There's no identity politics to latch onto.

No Obama deflections to hide behind.

Just a failure. Of the Republican Party. Of their trade policies. Of their tax plans. Of their business acumen.

Instead of admitting Trump is a failure. They'll hide in threads about socialism. Because Republicans don't have anything other than fear and ignorance. It's all they've ever had. They're the masters of creating it.

What?! Next thing they'll say is the tax cuts for the rich didn't pay for themselves!

Ha ha...
That trade deficit thing doesn't matter. What matters is King Trump I is making Amerika Great Again. White folks and the rich have never had it so good. Anyway, he wasn't really serious when our Great Leader talked about the trade deficit. I don't even know what it means. Anyway, our economy is still great!

Republicans suck at governing. Tax cuts since 2000, when we only had $5 billion in national debt and no deficits, doubling the budget as they did when W was in office, Trump threatening our freaking allies with tariffs ...

GOP Congressmen have walked in lock step with Trump so they could get their unneeded tax cuts that only benefit the wealthy and corporations and swell the debt and deficits even further.

Conservatives? Ya, riiiiiiiiight

Again, hey alt-right, where is the Tea Party????

The Koch Brothers pulled the funding that financed the 'grass roots' Tea Party, paid for the buses that went to D.C., etc.

They had a good chuckle, though, looking at the misspellings and mistakes on the Tea Party idiot's signs.

Who cares about the trade deficit without the other half of the metrics. Have US made goods purchases increased? Has B2B caused more US-based services used? A trade deficit doesn't mean anything without knowing the full context. If the trade deficit went up buy internal spending went up double that, then the trade deficit isn't an issue. Obviously, we can pretty much guess that internal spending has not increased and if it has, it hasn't gone up nearly enough to counter the increase in the trade deficit. But it's always better to get the facts first and THEN make assumptions. I know, I know...that's not how partisan hate works. But it's never a bad thing to strive to get better.

This is to be expected. The US is the only strong economy in the world - as such, global imports are cheap due to a strong dollar and export demand is weak due to poor domestic economies for pretty much every country outside of the USA.

Here is a fun fact,

In Q1, our trade deficit with China widened about $10B (19% increase YoY). However, Apple accounted for nearly 50% of that drop -$5B in Apple sales to China YoY. There is some fall off in demand for Apple products just because the coolness factor is wearing off - but the big story is the economic meltdown in China is destroying demand for everything considered a luxury product. China also had a 16% drop in total auto sales in January YoY. Trump really can't do anything to help the export side of the equation when the Chinese don't have the money to buy. All he can do is focus on the import side using tariffs to encourage US domestic production.

This is the biggest new story going right now and the MSM completely ignores it. This economic collapse will define the next decade for the world. The raw material producing nations will suffer (Australia), the 1-Belt/1-Road nations will suffer as China will be forced to recuperate some of their invested capital. Shorting Aussie real estate is the biggest no-brainer investment going today.
