Alaska governor Mike Dunleavy, whose state faces a $1.6 billion deficit, is proposing to cut $310 million from the state's education system -- including a jaw-dropping 41 percent cut to the University of Alaska System. The planned reduction represents the largest of any state agency.

The State's only medical education program would also be eliminated.

As long as they cut the POS Liberal/socialist/sex-with-sealions-is-ok instructors and faculty first. Alaska is still a fairly open and wild state, but too many hemp sandal dudes with sherpa hats are moving in after watching all those stupid AK shows on TV - there's only about a hundred.

That's going to put a damper on super-skank Bristol Palin's next --------- at the University Of Alaska.

Well, this turned out exactly as I thought it would.

Vote accordingly folks.

Alaska is a different kind of state......very heavily reliant on one industry for tax revenue. Oil.

The price is down....which harms states like Alaska significantly.

Before this cut, the state is subsidizing students at the University to the tune of over $25K a year. That's the subsidy...not the total cost.

I don't know how that compares with other states but I'll bet it's one of the richest if not THE richest subsidy a state provides public university students.

Well having first hand experience with UAA... I can see that this isn't a bad idea... the state doesn't attract the best and brightest in academia... and once anyone got into the system its hard to get them out. A good number of the faculty if the have advanced degrees... they have "box top degrees"... from the degree mills here and there. ... Bernie Sanders wife worked at a favorite diploma mill..

But because not a lot of people want to live there... they really didn't have good stock teaching... and when they got a quality person in... they beat them severely about the dead and neck until they did leave. It was borderline ----------.

I couldn't believe what they allowed to pass for accredited classes... honestly I felt bad for the kids transferring out of state

Alaska is a very different place.

As with most things... once again you don't know what you are talking about. Alaska has one of the highest number of veterans per capita... not just any veteran but one's who have actually been in combat situations... not just the pencil pushers sporting warm body ribbons... or conducting drone operations from the comfort of a chair 100's of miles away...

Its the one place in this country I lived where women are actually emancipated and treated as equals. Even with all the modern trappings its not an easy place to live.

The TV shows are just campy representation and other than the scenery... tell you really very little of what it is like to live there. Perhaps if you would step outside where the television isn't... you would know more about the world.

You betcha... mostly for the sakes of the youngsters educated in the system.

But here is the clencher ... Alaskan's pay few taxes... after a certain age often you don't pay property tax.. MatSu valley where i lived sales tax was 3% (Thanks Sarah)... Anchorage had no sales tax... then there is the permanent fund thingie... where each person receives a couple thousand a year... just for living there. A family of 5 that is a nice little win-fall to happen in late Oct.

The whole state is subsidized by the federal government... Hell when it was still a territory it was a socialist state and even had a chit system.

Sarah Palinoonietunes was a major hypocrite and played republicl°wns like a fiddle... laughing all the way to the bank living in Wasilla and paying no income taxes... not to mention changing the face of politics.

What I am saying is that is not AK's taxed subsidies being discussed here... they are yours.

It's always easy to pick out who never went to college or a technical college.

But don't worry. Because this effects heavily the technical degrees these schools offer, other states and foreign workers will fill the job void where Alaskans are not longer qualified. Good job, dummy.

Alaska IS one seriously F'd up state. If people had to pay more taxes there then there would be a lot less people there. The state has been Federally and Oil subsidized forever. It's still mind blowing how much homes and such cost there though.

#18 | Posted by GalaxiePete at 2019-02-19 05:06 PM | Reply

I won't say its F'd up... just remote and different... very different... like living in a foreign country... but having all the rights of a US citizen.

My guess is the jobs they are cutting are things like Gold Panning 101a and 101 b...Knife making, fiber arts and weaving... soap stone carving things like that... non essentials... adjuncts work..
They have a decent english lit department.

And after they cut state funding by 41% The University will be forced to raise tuition and cut services and instructor wages as a direct response because cutting funding has no effect on cost, just who pays it. Then the right wing will complain about rising tuition and how crappy the underfunded education is. Then they will point at the well funded private universities and say that since the underfunded public university cant meet the same standards we should punatively cut their funding even more or just shut it down so that there is even less opportunity to get a quality education.

Rs hate the idea of public education. When you're telling people that you can cut taxes, increase spending, and balance a budget you don't want them to know arithmetic.

They can't fix a 41% budget cut by cutting the 2% of elective courses that JeffJ hates. Hey Jeff why aren't you concerned about the business classes teaching trickle down vulture economics as the only way to run a business?
