Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, February 17, 2019

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last autumn after receiving a request from the U.S. government to do so, the Asahi newspaper reported Sunday. The report follows Trump's claim Friday that Abe had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize for opening talks and easing tensions with North Korea. The Japanese leader had given him "the most beautiful copy" of a five-page nomination letter, Trump said at a White House news conference.

"The president was nominated for the prize in 2017 and 2018, but the Nobel Committee determined that both nominations were "forged." Olav Njolstad, secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said last year that investigators believe the same person assumed the identity of the same qualified nominator in both instances. The information was turned over to local police, Njolstad told The New York Times, and investigators reached out to the FBI. No other details were provided."

How anybody can listen to Trump unscripted rants without being scarred to death is mind boggling to me. They have no basis in fact, the have no logical flow, they make no sense. This guy has the nuclear button.

Still, a reasonable person should conclude that it is better to make peace than war and this most certainly includes Russia and North Korea.

In its current structure the military industrial complex has attacked peacenicks on the left relentlessly since WWII. Some of our Governments most terrible behaviors materialized under the guidance of J Edgar Hoover and George BushI, putting truth to the saying, "only the good die young". The FBI and CIA have spent billions targeting the likes of MLK, the Black Panthers, Green Peace, Native Indian protesters, tree spikers....six nuns and priests that walked onto a nuclear manufacturing site hurting no one while ignoring the larger threat of right wing violence.

Now comes Trump and discombobulates the entire US Imperialist conspiracy, but only because he is unable to think three moves ahead. Not only does he not know anything, but unlike any other President in American history, he is unwilling to learn, because it would cut into his golf and TV time. The irony here is great.

He categorized Mexicans as criminals and rapists. He's started a war with the media because they report the truth about him. He can't complete a single sentence without lying. He destroyed the EPA. He increased racial tensions in this nation by throwing his support behind Nazis and white supremacists. His trade war is costing Americans their jobs. His only accomplishment in office has been giving himself a tax break. He's banned transgenders from the military. He sold all his cabinet seats to the highest bidder.

That's just from the top of my head.

This is what Republicans have become.

Obama lives in their heads. He has the one thing they know they cannot achieve... real leadership. They just don't have the necessary vision and empathy. That is why they are so obsessed with him. It is jealousy, plain and simple. And Trump is the most obsessed. His, and the Republican party's, primary goal is to somehow be "better" than Obama. But they don't know how. Because Obama was great as a result of what he tried to (and did) accomplish. So they try to replace his accomplishments. Get the same awards. Tear down his legacy.

But you cannot "try to be great". You will never achieve it that way. You have to have a vision that inspires people, and work towards leading them to that vision. Republicans have no vision. Because they have become so accustomed to losing, all they care about is "winning". That is why they will never achieve "greatness", and all they are left with are these pathetic attempts at emulation.

It is true... "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"

Why are you so obsessed with it? Why does it make you so angry? Dare I say we are getting a glimpse of your Obama Derangement Syndrome?

The Peace Prize has always been political. And it is a Norwegian prize. They can give it to whoever they want. You have absolutely ZERO stake in it (financially or politically) so what you think it "should" be does not matter. And you have made it pretty clear that your primary view of what it "should be", is not awarded to the focus of your obsession.

Democrats did not ask for Obama to get the Peace Prize. Honestly, they don't care too much about it. It was a nice gesture from the rest of the world, but it doesn't actually DO anything or change our behavior so it is not very significant.

You know who DOES care A LOT about it? You and other Republicans. You say you think it is a worthless prize (due to its political motivation)? It has always been. So why are you SO PISSED OFF that your nemesis got it? And why are REPUBLICANS putting so much effort in trying to win a debased award?

See... your words say one thing (the Nobel Prize is worthless) while the WAY you say them says something completely different (the Nobel Prize is VERY important to you, and it STILL pisses you off that the guy you hate won it).

"Interesting this touched a sore spot."

Most people lie a little. Some politicians lie more than most. Donald Trump is a pathological liar who lies consistently and continually. He lies more than he tells the truth.

People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil
Author: M. Scott Peck

People who are evil attack others instead of facing their own failures.

Excerpts:

A predominant characteristic...of the behavior of those I call evil is scapegoating.

Because in their hearts they consider themselves above reproach, they must lash out at any one who does reproach them. They sacrifice others to preserve their self-image of perfection. p 73

Since the evil, deep down, feel themselves to be faultless, it is inevitable that when they are in conflict with the world they will invariably perceive the conflict as the world's fault. Since they must deny their own badness, they must perceive others as bad.

They project their own evil onto the world. They never think of themselves as evil; on the other hand, they consequently see much evil in others...Evil, then, is most often committed in order to scapegoat, and the people I label as evil are chronic scapegoaters....The evil attack others instead of facing their own failures. p 73-74

Really???

#78 | POSTED BY JEFFJ

By your definition.

What do you think a "peace prize" is? How do you qualitatively measure "peace"?

Peace is a measure of the effect of politics, so it is, BY DEFINITION, a political prize.

A political prize is ALWAYS going to be controversial. Because, in politics, you are almost always working AGAINST someone. If EVERYONE agrees in your goal and how to get there, then everyone would be working to get there and it would not be difficult. Instead, politics is about compromise. And when you have compromise by groups of people, you will always have people (either on one side or the other, or on the extremes of BOTH sides) who thinks that they got a "bad deal" and got screwed over. There are ALWAYS winners and losers.

Now, usually the peace prize is given to someone who accomplishes goals that a majority of the world community as a whole agree with. So, it isn't actually likely that you will think the average Nobel Prize Laureate is controversial (but I guarantee you that for each of them there is someone, and probably a lot of someones, who does). But, when the prize was given to Obama it was not focused on an issue in some war-torn state on a distant continent. Instead it was focused on YOUR country. Why are you so surprised you find it controversial? And, as is almost always the case, a majority of the WORLD supported him receiving the prize. It is just that, among the people of the planet, you were in this case in the small minority who disagreed with it.

Take off your rose colored glasses and try to look past your own selfish wants and desires if you want to understand how the world really works. For one, grow up and realize that it does not revolve around you and what YOU think in your narrow view is "right" or "wrong".

Right from the horse's mouth:

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who in the preceding year "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

So, Obama was given this award ostensibly for campaigning for himself.

Also, the final vote on the prize is not until October. That was AFTER his "apology tour" (as Republican called it). Just because YOU disagree with it, does not mean that EVERYONE ELSE does (you could *gasp* be part of a very narrow minority of the world's population with this viewpoint).

Sure... nominate away. It is up to the committee to determine whether they want to award him with the prize. And if they give him the prize, I will be interested to see what their reasoning is.

The real point (and the basis of this thread) is that Trump NOMINATED HIMSELF for a prize that you claim doesn't really matter. It seems the prize matters A LOT to Republicans.

Secondly, even if they "fudged the rules a little bit", which you have provided no evidence of outside of speculation, what did Obama accomplish early in his presidency that was prize-worthy?

#112 | POSTED BY JEFFJ

If you want to see where Obama did the most good, you just have to find the thing that Republicans are most pissed off about.

I would say his "apology tour" that Republicans howled and gnashed their teeth about was a big part. But, it was part of a bigger effort where he tried to rebuild our alliances and connections with other countries as well as build new ones, even for countries that are not majority white.

The biggest thing that promoted peace was trying to build relationships with Muslim countries, and making it clear that the US did not see the religion of Islam as its enemy.

Now, again, politically you are going to disagree and because of that you will most likely completely discount the value of what he did. But regardless of whether you agree with the goal, you SHOULD be able to agree that it was a difficult task. Mainly because of how much Republicans resisted, mocked, and berated him over said efforts.

One thing where we can agree on the Nobel Peace Prize is that the actions it recognizes should be politically difficult. And the Republican response to his actions (and, as you display, that response is still ongoing) makes it clear that what he did WAS politically difficult.

A little history of Donald Trump

Trump's discriminatory rental practices based on race

www.nytimes.com

www.politico.com

In the 1980's- i was at this speech

www.vox.com

1988: In a commencement speech at Lehigh University, Trump spent much of his speech accusing countries like Japan of "stripping the United States of economic dignity." This matches much of his current rhetoric on China.

Central Park Five

Trump still believes they are guilty-despite DNA evidence to the contrary

1991: Trump quote: "Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. ... I think that the guy is lazy. And it's probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It's not anything they can control." Trump at first denied the remarks, but later said in a 1997 Playboy interview that "the stuff O'Donnell wrote about me is probably true."

Trump was and is a strong proponent of Obama birtherism

Trump on Charlottesville

"I think there is blame on both sides," the president told reporters that day in August 2017.
"You had some very bad people in that group," Trump said, referring to the white nationalist groups rallying against removal of a Confederate statue. "But you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides."

There were nazis on one side.

So you tell me, Is Trump racist?
