Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, February 17, 2019

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) earned praise from "drug justice" advocates after criticizing a growing marijuana legalization and business model that is paving the way for white male investors to reap major profits after minorities spent decades in prisons for selling pot.

Ocasio-Cortez cited statistics from Colorado and Washington, where marijuana is legal for recreational use, that 73 percent of cannabis business executives are male and 81 percent are white.

Much appreciation to @AOC for speaking truth to power. We must legalize marijuana in a way that recognizes & repairs the disastrous, disproportionate harms of the drug war & mass criminalization on people of color.#MarijuanaJustice#NoMoreDrugWar pic.twitter.com/YLaytyMJSG

She raised the possibility of "affirmative-action licensing" to boost the number of minorities in local cannabis businesses so that "frontline communities" could now "reap the benefits or recoup some segment of costs that they bore in the 1990s during the war on drugs."

So then, do you favor ending the prohibition on drugs nationwide like I do? If you want to drive up the price of something then make it illegal, the cartels would be out of business overnight if we just ended the prohibition on drugs like Portugal did.

My point was, govt has to get their cut to make them allow it.
My view is that people should be allowed to do what they need to to survive, within reason.
Drugs cover up unhappiness. Even social drinkers drink to change their perception of how much fun they're having. Chronic drug use comes from not being able to face life's challenges sober.
I would be OK with the govt providing drugs to those that want them. Social users that hold jobs and don't disrupt the world could buy pot like under current laws being enacted. Just like picking up a 6 for the weekend. Heroin and coke pose other challenges. Mood swings and violent outbursts, etc. Cause problems and you get classed as chronic. You still get all the free drugs you want. Only caveat would be now you live in govt housing with other chronic drug users. Free food, health care and a funeral. Some would die, some would reevaluate their circumstances and become eligible for rehab, also free.
This is a simplistic overview but you see what I mean. Cruel? Maybe, but some people will drug themselves to death no matter what. This would be safer for the general population (reduce mugging, burglary, theft, etc) and overall cheaper that what we do now, ( interdiction, prisons, homeless).

IMO... the sooner we erase all choices of race to American or not American the better.
We come in all shapes..sizes..colors and orientations.. but we are all equal
It's true half this country is still racist... but it used to be much worse.
As the old racist die off...start taxing wealth to equal the playing field and the younger generations will overcome.

Trump racism is like a candle before it dies.. one last flicker and then its done... God willing

Also.. all drugs should be legal, taxed and regulated and all violent crimes should have their penalties tripled.

In other words, what is actually going on is way over your head. This isn't about government getting their cut, no, it's about fat cats making sure they get their cut.

If government were to get its cut what would happen? Raise teachers salaries, fix roads, do what needs to be done but under Republicans it is never about that. It is always about rewarding rich fat cats with exclusive deals that limit the number of sellers thereby giving them a virtual monopoly to make huge sums of money replacing the "evil drug dealers" who are incarcerated for doing the exact same thing.

#17, It all comes down to access to financial services, which in the marijuana industry is extremely unsettled due to conflicts between Federal and State laws.

Two people, black or white with the same credit score, do not have the same access to credit in this country. Without the liquidity to survive Capitalism's frequent ups and downs, small businesses fail in droves.

"leave it to aoc to make it all about identity politics..."

"Identity politics" is the biggest lie in politics. AOC brings up injustice, so there may be more black and hispanic victims but it is certainly not limited to them. The tax cut for the 1% while poor folks rot in prison over marijauna issues is not identity politics, it's just injustice.

The term "Identity politics" is used to demean the intelligence and integrity of those who vote Democratically because of reasoned conclusions resulting from The New Deal, The Great Society, Freedom Rights Acts and many more things that came from Democrats. That's not "Identity Politics" it is reasoned, intelligent voting in their own best interests. If you want to see examples of "Identity Politics" you have to look towards poor white folks who vote against their own interests when they vote Republican. They are willing to give up their own interests because they think they are hurting Black and Hispanic people, their racism is more important to them than their own well being.

poor folks rot in prison over marijauna issues is not identity politics, it's just injustice. ~ Danni

99% of the time its about distribution....

About 750,000 people are arrested every year for marijuana offenses in the U.S. There's a lot of variation across states in what happens next. Not all arrests lead to prosecutions, and relatively few people prosecuted and convicted of simple possession end up in jail. Most are fined or are placed into community supervision. About 40,000 inmates of state and federal prison have a current conviction involving marijuana, and about half of them are in for marijuana offenses alone; most of these were involved in distribution. Less than one percent are in for possession alone.

That plain straight talking AOC is so controversial speaks volumes about the poor level of education in this country. She is simply bringing the obvious to the attention of many.

To characterize AOC as a True Believer, as defined by Eric Hoffer, is to misconstrue the essential problem true Believer, who is someone factually wrong who insists they are right and can even be prepared to die for that fake cause. People who volunteer for combat in Afghanistan and Iraq are "True Believers" those who protest against war are not.

Examples of reality disconnects:

They lied about #Iran
They lied about #Vietnam
They lied about #Chile
They lied about #Iraq
They lied about #Afghanistan
They lied about #Iraq. Again.
They lied about #Libya.
They lied about #Syria.

But THIS TIME it's for a good cause. #Venezuela

Pelosi has already taken new congress members to the woodshed for daring to speak out against Israel and regime change in Venezuela, highlighting the lack of substantive difference between the parties when it comes to American "exceptionalism" and foreign policy. But even AOC and Bernie have failed to be on the side of truth regarding these touchy problems.

She has a point here, even though her solution is retarded. When states legalize, it becomes a pathetic regulatory cash grab.

You get the "But I don't want to get poisoned!" line by idiots who think the regs have something to do with health. They do not. It's just weight measurements for tax purposes.

The entire tax structure and limits on people with former drug convictions disproportionately effects minorities, and ensure the black market survives. Colorado did it. Oregon did it. California did it. I can't think of a state that has legalized that hasn't managed to reinforce its institutional racism.

"How about stopping the illegal immigration so we don't have illegals to deport? "

How about arresting the employers of illegal immigration. That would stop it immediately but you never want to discuss that do you? Build your stupid wall so we can all point and laugh as it changes absolutely nothing about illegal immigration. Oh, we will be pointing and laughing at you.

Danni,

I'm all for cracking down on employers as long as it's coupled with ZERO public services for people who are here illegally.

Can't have one without the other.

"Can't have one without the other."

So if an illegal alien is injured doing your lawn we'll just let them lay there and die. No, absolutes like "zero public services" is a bridge too far.

Danni,

I was referring to things like public education, welfare, food stamps, etc.
