Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Throughout the 2016 election, Donald Trump campaigned for president on the promise that he would build a wall along the southern border. Six weeks after his election in November 2016, Congress overwhelmingly passed a statute -- codified as 10 U.S.C § 284 -- that authorized the secretary of defense to support the "construction of roads and fences and installation of lighting to block drug smuggling corridors across international boundaries of the United States." On Dec. 23, 2016, a month before leaving office, President Obama signed the 973-page bill into law without any objection to this provision.

Isn't it the best example of Donald Trump's privileges that we would take his long planned actions and blame everyone else for them?

He could turn into Caligula and we would blame Obama.

Does Trumps Wall even exist?

Trump Claims he is already building his Wall. It's already built! You just cannot see it yet.

I think he is using that new stealth wall technology.

Clever Humpy!

Many Presidents Have Declared Emergencies -- But Not Like Trump Has

According to the Brennan Center for Justice, presidents have declared national emergencies 60 times (including Trump) since the power was codified in 1976. Although the law -- passed in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and Watergate -- gave Congress the right to challenge an emergency declaration, most have been uncontroversial.

"There's rarely been a problem," Trump said. "They sign it. Nobody cares. I guess they weren't very exciting."

Trump's declaration differs from many of those earlier emergencies. About three-quarters of the time, presidents use their emergency power to impose economic sanctions or limit trade with foreign parties. Then-President Jimmy Carter, for example, declared an emergency to limit business dealings with Iran. George H.W. Bush did the same with Iraq. And Barack Obama used emergency powers to limit transactions with Libya.

Critics say Trump's declaration is categorically different, in that the president is using his power to fund a border wall far bigger and more expensive than Congress was willing to pay for.

Good information. Thanks for posting this, Gal.

Congress has been surrendering its powers to the Executive and the bureaucracy for decades.

It's a trend that needs to be reversed.

Reagan granted mass amnesty in 1986. Bill Clinton started major creation of physical barriers and created a mass deportation machine in the 90s. Barack Obama deported more people than any POTUS and built more barriers.

What we have now is Trump betraying America for a stunt that is costing at least billions. I imagine many hundreds of billions in unforeseen consequences.

The drug war, like EVERY foreign military engagement since WWII, isn't just a waste of of our blood and money but a crime against those we have attacked. The drug war is a complete failure and one of the principal reasons there are immigrants on our Southern border. But the Canadian border is three times longer and a larger volume of drugs passes over the Canadian border than the Mexican.

The US drug problem has nothing to do with Trump's ascension to power. For that blame our slow relentless economic decline and the idiotic electoral college. People are giving up on the duopoly.

Trump was offered a bipartisan $25 billion deal that included the money he wanted in exchange for a path to citizenship for DACA recipients who came here as children. He made the biggest mistake a negotiator can make: turning down a good deal. But, he didn't write The Art of The Deal, so maybe he didn't realize that.

PS - Republicans had 2 years of unified control to give him the money for his wall. They didn't want to either.

Building a million dollar a mile along 1,954 miles is a very stupid idea. They are, however, necessary near ever border crossing which accommodates motor vehicles. The fences, walls, whatever you want to call them, are ugly and ineffective without daylight backup.

Solve our domestic drug problems, stop our vicious foreign policy and immigration will stop.

"Solve our domestic drug problems, stop our vicious foreign policy and immigration will stop."

or

Start arresting the employers. The drugs aren't flowing through the areas that any wall will be built. They come through our ports, in containerized freight.

Take the time to watch an old movie; "Key Largo" starring Humphrey Bogart and you will see the obvious solution to our drug problem. And hey, it's actually a great movie.

-Start arresting the employers

The agency that would do that is ICE, which your team calls the "gestapo" and wants to abolish. You think local police have the time and resources to enforce immigration laws?

"The agency that would do that is ICE, which your team calls the "gestapo" and wants to abolish."

ICE has only been in existence since 2003. They have yet to carry out real operations against employers. Those employers are rich Republicans who contribute to the GOP, so don't hold your breath.

You think local police have the time and resources to enforce immigration laws?

If they don't have time, why should employers?

Why should employers have to be the front line against non-citizens working?

If a city can declare itself a "sanctuary" why can't an employer?

And as I have stated hundreds of times, you can work legally in this country and be illegal.

This is why cutting back on beds at detention centers is so important to Democrats. Catch and Release is a gold mine for more Democrats in congress.

They are released with a "work permit".

Thanks god Trump is his own man...

It was announced back in October that the Trump Administration had plans to escalate the number of raids on employers who employ undocumented workers. The raids, conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), often happen on a moment's notice.

Of course illegal immigrants are in the snare when targeting an employer...

"Why should employers have to be the front line against non-citizens working?"

Oh shut up. Employers regularly run background checks for every employee. They are in the best position to know who they are hiring. Your argument is simply stupid. I've been an employer, I am an employees. In both situations background checks were the norm. Who would want to hire a thief to work for them? Or a sexual offender? Or an illegal immigrant. Only one kind of person; a cheap bastard who wants employees to work for pennies.

So what? Does that enable them to vote? Study after study, even one conducted by Kris Kobach for the Trump administration all so no, it doesn't enable them to vote. And it isn't primarily Democrats hiring them either liar.

No one is claiming that it does. That will have to wait until Democrats have the power to grant full amnesty and a quick path to citizenship.
