Shawn Donnan: On the face of it, self-declared socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Donald Trump have little in common when it comes to economic policy. He's been cutting taxes. She wants the rich to pay more. He wants more coal-fired power plants. She has plans for a Green New Deal. And then there's trade.

People were saying that the entire election cycle vs Hillary. It was free trade vs protectionism. Protectionism, popular on the left and right somehow, won.

@#1

Maybe, then, that's also why the Democrats did so well in 2018.

If Pres Trump continues to act like a Socialist on trade, maybe that portends an interesting 2020 election.

Interesting indeed. Are the Dem candidates allowed to agree with Trump on anything, or will that torpedo them?

Conversely, and probably more importantly, is Pres Trump allowed to agree with the Democrats on anything?

His agreement with them on not building his wall has caused him a lot (understatement) of grief from his supporters.

Pres Trump's supporters appear to be a lot more rabid and binary in their tribalism than the more inclusive Democrats.

Depends on the Democrat. Bernie, as a sometime-Democrat, lined up pretty closely with Trump on protectionism. Republicans definitely did not care.

If Trump and Hillary agreed on trade, that'd be something else entirely.

@#6 ... Depends on the Democrat. Bernie, as a sometime-Democrat, lined up pretty closely with Trump on protectionism. Republicans definitely did not care. ...

Regarding protectionism, Pres Trump has been pretty constant.

His agreement with the Democrats regarding the wall, however, is a significant change in position, and reneging on promises.

So I'd say the operative condition here is more of Pres Trump not folding on a position to agree with the Democrats. If he held the poition from the campaign (e.g., trade), then it seems to be OK.

But if he abandons a campaign promise to agree with the Democrats, that's a whole different story.

So, going back to the article, you're saying that Pres Trump sounding like AOC on trade is A Good Thing?

No, they're both idiots. Hillary was right, they are wrong.
