The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to scrap plans for a women's jail in Lancaster and approved a new vision for a downtown mental health treatment center, though many criminal justice advocates worried that it might only be a jail by another name. The board room was filled with roughly 150 activists, the vast majority in orange T-shirts identifying them as supporters of JusticeLA. The back of the shirts read: "Can't get well in a cell."

Per the article, seems like several facilities spread throughout the county with mental and substance abuse treatment would be a better approach than one massive facility downtown.

Glad to see the focus turning to addressing what I'd guess are the foremost reasons most people end up in jail, stemming from: alcohol and drug abuse, doing something to get the money for drugs (robberies), and untreated mental issues like depression and bipolar disease.

cali is 2 billion short on the budget, what is LA in hole on theirs? their streets are filled with homeless, trash and crime...these issues will not be resolved in a year or 3 years....will this treatment center begin the turn around?

So much wrong with this and so much thought is put in to making criminals comfortable. If they spent half the time on finding ways to make victims of crimes more comfortable as they do the criminals, we may actually make progress. But instead, we spend more time on making sure murderers, rapers, etc. are comfortable. Oh, and since this is the 21st century and Liberals pretty much own our entire social construct, I am required to put in the disclaimer that of course I'm generalizing. There are a small percentage of people in jail who are innocent. But the small percentage is just that.

Well, since bleeding hearts have allowed our judicial system to become a mockery, of course it's a jail by another name. All anyone has to do after committing a crime is claim mental illness and they go to a mental health center. So more and more criminals are going there. So it's another type of jail. Pretty easy to understand.
