Russian authorities and major internet providers are planning to disconnect the country from the internet as part of a planned experiment, Russian news agency RosBiznesKonsalting (RBK) reported last week. The reason for the experiment is to gather insight and provide feedback and modifications to a proposed law introduced in the Russian Parliament in December 2018. A first draft of the law mandated that Russian internet providers should ensure the independence of the Russian internet space (Runet) in the case of foreign aggression to disconnect the country from the rest of the internet.

Heh, in a phone MMO I play, there were rumors of this event occurring in the upcoming weekend therefore leaving all Russian squads vulnerable to attack. The article isn't too set on a date though.

The next war is being fought via the Internet.

China realized the power and the risk of an open Internet years ago, and they put into place the so-called Great Firewall of China.

Now Russia appears to be dong something similar in effect, but further reaching in action.

I would expect more countries to do similar things as we go forward.

I agree. Big problem is that a countries laws only extend to the end of a physical border.

As more an more of a countries government gets on the net... it will break up into countries and the "Inter"net will no longer be interconnected.

However, Satellite mesh internet is getting developed and it will hard for a government to control a commercial internet mesh satellite. Especially if the store and forward and power off commands are hard coded.

On the ground, the electronics and antenna fit inside a plastic box the size of a Pringles can. Put it anywhere on the ground, add 12 vdc and then wifi to it. It will a act as just another gateway.

The alt-right troglodyte traffic will be down here when that happens.
There may not be a feral Trumper in site.

We'll know when we don't see Comrades Nulli, Sheepie-Nobias, Sporkgoat, Sawdust, FatAndyMattress, JordyPete, snippy, and the rest of the usual ruskies for a period of time.
