Republican congressman Walter B Jones, known for changing the name of French fries in government cafeterias to "freedom fries", has died. Mr Jones was a keen supporter of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and pushed for the name change in protest against France's opposition to the war. But he later had a complete change of heart, becoming one of the most vocal critics of the war in his party.

Far too late he disowned the phrase Freedom fries. Just remember you can be a congressman for most of your adult life and be remembered primarily for the worst idea you ever had.

Aha, the French govt obviously had him assassinated for daring to change the name!

"At the time, the Belgian Army spoke French. The fries were called "Les frites" (which is French) by the Belgians and so the American soldiers took to calling them "French fries". ... First, as mentioned, in the 1800s, Thomas Jefferson referred to fried potato strips as "frying potatoes in the French manner".Sep 23, 2010

Only HALF the people in Belgium use French as their day-to-day language. The other half speaks Flemish, which is a sort of soft Dutch. My mother's family was from Belgium and they spoke Flemish. And if you ever visit Belgium you'll soon learn that all the cities and villages have TWO names, one in Walloon (ie, French) and the other in Flemish, which can be fun depending on exactly where you picked-up your road maps.

"Because I did not do my job then, I helped kill 4,000 Americans, and I will go to my grave regretting that."

-- Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), quoted by the Raleigh News & Observer in 2015 on voting to authorize the Iraq war.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Walter. You revealed how the repugs really feel about the troops.

'Freedom Fries' reminds us that there has been a strain of grade-school idiocy in at least a part of the Republican party long before Trump.

It is sad that the people who hold the most power will be (or are) dead or senile in a relatively short amount of time. The rest of us will be left to deal with the consequences. Wars, climate change, pollution, famine, water scarcity...

Condemning the French for declining to support the invasion of Iraq is just more evil American propaganda. If there were a hell, this "inventor" deserves a decade in that place. Bush and Cheney deserve a lifetime for the pain the have imposed on mankind. But, as they know, that's just more BS the US population is immersed in.

I your own heart of hearts you know if you ever bought into the Neocons' Iraq Invasion and if you ever used the term "freedom fries." Just be honest about it and we can forgive you.
