Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Willie Brown: Make no mistake, President Trump's State of the Union address was the kickoff for his 2020 re-election campaign, and so far I've yet to see a Democrat who can beat him. So we Democrats really have our work cut out for us. If he carefully picks his fights, Trump can turn the light back on Democrats and force us to defend our progressive wing's "socialist" positions like health care for all, housing for all and guaranteed income.

I agree with Willie, especially with his conclusion:

"Let's just hope Democrats can figure out that we need to go beyond the left and motivate voters across the board, just as midterm congressional campaigns did under Nancy Pelosi's leadership.

We know we can win California and New York. The question is: Can we win the states we lost in 2016, or do we preach to the choir in an empty church?"

Unfortunately for the DNC, it seems like the progressive choir is the one making the most noise at this point.

"he connected with enough voters"

This is what matters. Connecting with enough voters in enough states. Bill Clinton did it. Barack Obama did it. Neither Al Gore nor Hillary Clinton could carry more than 20 states. Whinging about foreigners or our constitutional electoral system isn't going to win elections.

#5 | Posted by sentinel at 2019-02-10 03:07 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 3

Our candidates will have to pull further and further to the left to satisfy the party's activist constituency, much like Republicans did in response to the rise of the Tea Party, and probably with the same results.

The tea party resulted in republicans winning the majority in Congress and then taking over the executive and judicial branches.

I hope democrats have learned.

Given that few elections are landslides & roughly only about 50% of eligible voters actually vote Trump's solid 30% & electoral college strategy will likely see him through 2020, if he makes it to 2020.
Especially if the Democrats run Biden, Warren won't make it past primary nor will the spate of younger progressives.

#10 | POSTED BY JPW

Wow! What does that even mean?

In case you haven't been watching, Trump took a page out of the Democrat's book and did exactly the opposite. He appealed to the people who the Democrats didn't which happens to be a much bigger voting block. He appealed to people with skills (no higher education) and no jobs. And what did you (Democrats) do? You call them uneducated. Democrats may never win another election again. The Democrats should have taken over the Senate, they should have won more seats in the House. The Party will be split in 2020 and will lose the White House and may lose the House. If they don't come back to the center, they will lose more seats in the Senate.

Are you sure you are watching? I don't think so. Trump will most definitely win this next election by a landslide.

#25 | Posted by eberly at 2019-02-11 10:45 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Trump will come up with ways to demonize and make fun of every candidate. Joe Biden is a plagiarist. Bernie Sanders is old (so is Trump but Sanders doesn't go tanning or wear a wig or comb his hair, so it's more obvious). Beto O'Rourke has a DUI. Elizabeth Warren is very slightly native american. Amy Klobuchar is apparently mean.

Trump will convince the media to scandalize all of this and more, to te same level of "but her emails."

What they need to understand is that the lowest common denominator is much larger than what makes them comfortable.

The neighborhood on Long Island where I went to high school is infested with MAGAt Trump supporters. Before he came along they seemed like perfectly normal people even though they'd usually vote Republican but it wasn't until Trump that they started outing themselves as people who would celebrate the most disgusting of behaviors/attitudes/policies in their politicians and news providers.

I disagree.

The margins of people who handed Trump the EC win are minuscule in the bigger picture of total numbers of votes cast.

So much so that higher than normal turnouts can easily overpower the margin Trump won by.

Except next time there will be 4 years of nonsense reminding them of why voting for Trump is a bad idea.

Whereas the lowest common denominators (Trump supporters) will gleefully vote for him again.

You do know Donald Trump is corrupt, don't you?

corruption means nothing if we can't decide what "corrupt" means.

Only the sick and corrupt have trouble with this, JORDY. How many years did you spend in Bible School and why did you learn to hate Jesus?

Is Lowest Common Denominators the new Basket of Deplorables?

Not sure, but you do qualify for both so you have that going for you.

For whatever reason he appealed to WAY more than just the lowest common denominator. You need to accept that reality.

Well he appealed because he said:

Mexico will pay for the wall.

Everyone will get cheap, great health insurance that will cover everything with no deductible.

He will end jobs going overseas.

He will make companies bring jobs back to America.

He will pay off the debt.

He won't golf because he will be too busy working for the public.

He will drain the swamp.

All of which have been exposed as lies.

Why don't you just tell us all the reason, Jeff.

You're a good Trumpublican.

Tell us. What has Trump done to appeal to you.

Was it the tax cut he gave himself?

The DNC fixed the nomination.

If they 'fix' another nomination, they deserve to lose.

Strange the clown car term isnt being used today.

Whose emails will get hacked exposing the next fix.

The best thing for dems is to run AOC against Trump.
