Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, January 23, 2019

Hours after insisting in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) that he planned to deliver the State of the Union address in the House chamber as per tradition, President Donald Trump has totally capitulated -- announcing that the speech has been canceled. The president broke the news during a White House pool spray on Wednesday. "The state of the union speech has been canceled by Nancy Pelosi because she doesn't want to hear the truth," Trump said. "She doesn't want the American public to hear what's going on. And she's afraid of the truth."

The dotard's ‘truth' by the numbers.

Oh, they hear just fine.

Polls agree: Americans don't like shutdown and they blame Trump
"And she's afraid of the truth."

Funny coming from President CannotTellTheTruth Trump.

This really makes Trump look weak. He sounds more like Alec Baldwin's impersonation of him than himself.

Weird. Why would he choose that exact moment to finally start telling the truth? Now I'm all curious!

"She doesn't want the American public to hear what's going on."

You shut down the government and things are awful. Next.

Actually, he is conceding that it won't happen in Congress, but is planning on giving it elsewhere:

USA Today: Trump abandons plans to give State of the Union in the House, says he will look for another site

I think that this is a misplay by Speaker Pelosi since she will have zero control over the optics if it isn't in the House chamber.

@#% ... a misplay by Speaker Pelosi since she will have zero control over the optics if it isn't in the House chamber. ...

Normally I'd agree with the optics part, however, opinion is continuing to turn against Pres Trump on matters shutdown.

Doing it anywhere but the House may be seen as little more than a political ploy by Pres Trump and, as such, it could backfire even worse than that all-network "speech" he recently gave.

One optic that she's completely controlled in this case:

She won't have to sit right behind POTUS while he spews his version of the "narrative," and she won't have to be sitting next to Vice President Butterworth.

Very true, and I love the Butterworth reference, although I have always pictured him as a depressed Pillsbury Doughboy.

For the moment, as of noon today anyway, it's a free country. Trump can tell his lies anywhere else he wants. All he's going to do is play the martyr, praise himself, blame everybody else for his failures and rant on about his stupid wall.

I've had it with this pig!

Nancy is offering 5 billion in border security spending, just no new wall.

Trump is offering himself as the biggest Nancy Boy.

This shutdown will only last another 2-3 weeks tops. As the foodstamp money runs out, Pelosi will be forced to side with the poor people she already has over the poor people she hopes to import. Nancy will blink before the mailers go out saying EBT cards won't be getting filled.

I think you're assuming here that Pelosi or any other Democrat would show up if it isn't in the House Chamber. The optics of Trump giving SOTU alone or with only his sycophants are much worse. The pressure is now on them to reopen the government in order to save face.

I am assuming the exact opposite...Trump doing this in front of wildly enthusiastic crowds without a dour face to be seen. I think having the opposition sitting on their hands in Congress during the SOTU is far more damaging optically than his sycophants cheering everything he says.

- his sycophants cheering everything he says.

But enough about your clients Dulli and Mackris.

Polls show that Trump is being blamed by far more Americans than not, and rightly so.

Whatever lies he blathers in a live TV broadcast won't help that, prolly the opposite.

I disagree. The Dems are in a very difficult place on illegal immigration. Trump will bring more victims on illegal immigrant violence to the SoTU. He will tell their stories. Anna Navarro doing her nails on CNN while a family recounts its horror might play well to the unhinged left, but this does not play well nationally. Sitting on their hands and not showing compassion, will be be good for them.

Second, the Democrats have thus far been able to escape truly defining their stance on illegal immigration because the press has not done its job. The one key thing all the US will take away from the SoTU, whether in Congress or the NC Statehouse, is that Democrats are 100% for open borders. Crying about 'government waste' over 0.1% of the US budget has worn out its welcome for the Democrat rationale for the shutdown. It is clear now - this is not about waste. It is about what policy this country will have over illegals.

That said, I think this gets resolved within 2-3 weeks as the foodstamp money will run out in March.

We could eliminate the need simply by having the meth addicts hang out with Dem donors for the night. We can bag and tag them in the morning. Ed Buck is more effective at eliminating drug users than Duterte.

You know you are in Trump's House when Nutty Newty Gingrich is the grown-up in the room:

– Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House and an ally of President Donald Trump, urged the White House and Senate Republican leaders to make changes to Trump-endorsed border legislation coming to a vote this week to attract more Democratic votes.

"I think that that's misdesigned. I mean, you either design a deal that gets you Democrats, or you don't," Gingrich told USA TODAY on the 33rd day of the government shutdown. "If you're trying to attract people with sugar, you shouldn't pour vinegar on top of it."

"They will get many more votes if they clean the bill up. If they keep the bill the way it is now, I don't see any way they can pass it," said Gingrich.

"This was just plain a mistake."

I wouldn't want to be the fool who predicts when this shutdown will end. But I will refer to history and suggest we pay attention to the effect Trump's sinking polls numbers have on the GOP member of the Senate. They'll have a big decision to make unless they're all planning to retire after this term.

I seem to recall that Nixon dropped to 32 before panic set in and the Republican party kicked him to the curb. Right now Trump is hovering between 32 and 34. Trump took this thing upon himself, with his own words and was proud to do it, so he's the one getting the brunt. It's bound to get worse.

The one thing congress critters do best is look out for themselves . . . not you, not me and certainly not the country . . . themselves! Let's see how long they'll wait before they desert Trump to save themselves.

If he gives the speech elsewhere it won't matter. His audience with be half of the normal office for such a speech because, in all honesty, the SOTU is not so great right now. What's he going to say, "largest deficits in hisotry?" "Global Clinate Change out of control?" "26 Richest people own as much the poorest half of the world?" "Putin tells him what to do, when to do it and where to do it??
It ain't going to be a great speech, that much is for sure.
