Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

President Trump unveiled a sweeping plan Thursday to defend the U.S. and its allies from missile attack. The plan is the first update to the nation's missile defense strategy in nearly a decade, but in many ways it is reminiscent of President Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, a pie-in-the-sky program that was later dubbed "Star Wars."

"Critics were quick to point out that meeting this goal would cost many billions of dollars.

"It would be incredibly costly," says Laura Grego, a physicist at the Union of Concerned Scientists who tracks missile defense programs. Grego says that Trump's comments hark back to the days of Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative. That program cost billions, and in the end, its vision of a space-based blanket defense against nuclear attack proved to be too technically challenging."

No worries. Mexico will pay for it.

Trump's laying in bed in his skivvies during 'executive time' at 11 am, pissed about the wall, worried about his falling poll numbers, and thoughts of Kim Jung Un suddently appear in his head. "Hey! That little ------- slope isn't playing ball and de-nuking. I can do a missile shield! ---- yes!! ... and it goes with my Space Force!!"

Actually, no it isn't. Parts of that program are the only thing protecting Israel from the assaults of the Muslims in the West Bank. And I have personally seen it in action protecting some U.S. posts in Afghanistan from Rocket attacks.

Some of you need to stop talking out of your ass about things you know nothing about.

Bottle rockets are one thing, grunt. Ballistic missiles are another.

Like I said, the concept works. What do you think is protecting California from anything coming over the Pacific? It aint liberal feel good wishes.

"Like I said, the concept works."

No, it really doesn't.

"What do you think is protecting California from anything coming over the Pacific?"

Not a missile defense system.

Gov shutdowns, rebirth of Star Wars... what will Dandy Donnie think of next to try to distract from his impeachable acts?

Given the choice, I'll trust liberal good wishes (understood as diplomacy and sound policy) over a missile defense system any day of the week. It's cheaper too.

Oooo, look what I found under the desk! Let's dust it off and use it as a distraction!

Trump has the best brain, so he'll probably name it after something space related that he know's of. "Sputnik", I bet.

Which is useless without a military deterrent. i.e Two wolves and a sheep arguing over what's for dinner.

"Which is useless without a military deterrent."

Missile defense isn't a deterrent. It's the opposite, in fact.

Star Wars was welfare for the rich back when Reagan proposed it and that's what it still is.

A way to channel money to Halliburton (or whatever name they go by today) and other mega corporations.

Not to mention how horribly destabilizing it is. Din't Russia just recently announce a new ballistic missile that could get through anything?

Yes, Russia uses a new keyboard while we throw money down a hole and up a wall.

California is protected by the same thing that is protecting Steve King's state of Iowa. The threat of Mutually Assured Destruction. If the button is pushed both sides will be destroyed and there is no defense, only retaliation

My wife's cousin worked on missile shield technology for for many years, up until recently. The track record of hits isn't great. And that's when they know exactly when and where the targeted missiles are coming from.

....and all the details about said missiles and when they use few or no countermeasures or any of the multitude of tactics that could be used to defeat such a system...

Yet the US has funded research into such systems to the tune of billions a year for half a century. Land of the Scared and Home of the Stupid.

"Star Wars won't work!" -- Frank Zappa

We had the same idiotic discussion when Reagan was President. All we ever got was cartoons depicting the most excellent technology that never existed. Trump is a new carnival barker, continuing the proud tradition of hustling the rubes.

A Space Force violates the Outer Space Treaty agreed to fifty years ago; the abrogation of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty from thirty years ago; and the chaos of random decision making for use of force, the Trump administration is returning to the madness of President Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" idea with costly and ineffective ideas regarding missile-defense technologies.

The most effective alternative would be arms control and disarmament. We need to return to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty; engage in disarmament talks with both Russia and China; revive the Iran nuclear accord; and genuinely pursue an arms control dialogue with North Korea.

The US Military is a money burning machine, which has proved itself incapable of winning a war since WWII. The whole point of the military industrial complex (MIC) is to burn money and deprive the general population of the good life in the process. Time and time again uneducated peasants have kicked their ass.
