Trump denies Pelosi military aircraft just before takeoff

President Donald Trump said Thursday he was denying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a military plane for a trip to Afghanistan and other countries that was set to begin in the afternoon, a tit-for-tat retaliation that deepened the divide between the leaders and brought the government no closer to reopening. The move, apparently in response to Pelosi's letter a day earlier suggesting the President reschedule his State of the Union address, made for high drama but little substance in the ongoing back-and-forth over border security. As the partial government shutdown stretches nearly a month, the back-and-forth reflects a West Wing angling for the upper hand in a standoff with newly powerful Democrats. Pelosi had been scheduled to leave within the hour that Trump's letter was made public, making for the awkward site of a large blue Air Force bus idling outside the Capitol as the implications of the President's missive came into focus.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office responded to Donald Trump's cancellation of her overseas trip -- and explained what she was going to do on the previously-classified visit to a war zone.

Pelosi's chief of staff Drew Hammill tweeted that on the Brussels arm of the trip, which was required for pilot rest, the California Democrat and her delegation were going to "meet with top NATO commanders, U.S. military leaders and key allies–to affirm the United States' ironclad commitment to the NATO alliance."

He added that Pelosi was not planned to stop in Egypt -- suggesting that the White House's statement about the trip was incorrect.

Along with expressing "appreciation and thanks" to military service members, the trip was also intended "to obtain critical national security and intelligence briefings from those on the front lines," Hammill tweeted.

He added that Trump traveled to Iraq during his shutdown -- and so did a congressional delegation led by Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY).

She can still go, she just can't use military aircraft. Brilliant move really. Normally she just would have flown off and very few would know. Now it's out in the open, that during a government shutdown, and post refusal to meet with Trump, she planned a whirlwind overseas tour on the taxpayers dime.

Pelosi's 2nd in line for the Presidency. The Leader of the House never flies commercial - not since 9/11.

Everyone would have known she (and other Reps) went once she arrived - not before. They would have gone and the trip would have been secure. Trump destroyed the secrecy these trips demand because he's a petulant, spoiled, man-child.

By the way, Trump then flew Melania to Florida. All alone. On the same aircraft model Pelosi would have taken, All so Melania could go to Mar-a-lago.

Personally, I don't care how much debt the Gov. runs, it's what they spend it on that pisses me off. I'd be thrilled to death with trillions in debt if we had good schools, healthcare, roads, etc.

Seems reasonable .. we have no money .... "security concerns" over the ability of the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security to protect government officials during the shutdown.
