Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

President Donald Trump should either delay his State of the Union address or submit it in writing, Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote Wednesday in a letter citing the security burdens that the annual address to a joint session of Congress would place on a partially shuttered federal government.

So that this doesn't get twisted by the right wing, here is what Nancy Pelosi said to reporters when asked about her letter to Trump:

Pelosi herself told reporters she was not disinviting Trump.

"No, no, no. It's on the strength of the statement of the secretary of Homeland Security about all of the resources that are needed to prepare for a State of the Union Address, which she calls an 'event of special security,'" the speaker said.

And before it's stated, Steny Hoyer already walked back his more incendiary comments before he actually knew the contents of the letter and the intentions behind it.

I cut off Nancy's complete statement in post 1:

As for the House Speaker, asked if she's disinvited the president, Pelosi said, "No, no, no. It's on the strength of the statement of the secretary of Homeland Security about all of the resources that are needed to prepare for a State of the Union address, which she calls an ‘event of special security.' And so these people are not working and we've never really had a State of Union when government has been in a shutdown since the Budget Act in the [1970s]."
Bet Trump has already called Kirstjen Nielsen to express his displeasure. It'll be interesting to see if she backs off what Pelosi said were Nielsen's security concerns.

And again, no, it's not about the Secret Service, they say they can handle their responsibilities. It's about security for everyone else, which is the DHS' responsibility.

"Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who earlier this month announced Pelosi as the new House speaker, weighed in on Twitter shortly after the letter was made public.

"Individual 1 will not be permitted to deliver his state of the union address until government is reopened," he wrote, referencing how the president has been labeled in legal filings.

"Welcome to life in the New Democratic Majority. Get used to it. #EndTrumpShutdown."

This is a brilliant political move by Nancy, it's well within her power as Speaker to make this decision.

Taking away TV time for Trump is probably the biggest lever she has, so he has to be furious.

Politics Aside, Pelosi Made the Right Decision on SOTU

The President has deliberately, intentionally stopped the federal government from functioning, except on certain continuity over government bases, to force an issue that has little public support and which he's unwilling to bargain over through a normal legislative process. That's not okay and we can't allow it to migrate into becoming normal. The foundational role of the federal government and the essential responsibility of those who run it is that it runs. It isn't security or the general welfare or anything else. It's to run it.

(Shutdowns) needs to be eradicated from the framework of American government. It is almost exclusively the work of Republicans and it is an attack on the very foundation of democratic government. It's pure hostage taking and extortion. To the extent it continues to exist it needs to be recognized for the grave crisis and abnormality that it is.

Amen.

Even Politico admits the obvious...

"Publicly, Democrats plan to argue that the parties need to focus on addressing the shutdown, now the longest in U.S. history. But privately, they also don't want to give Trump a major platform to blame them for the shutdown when Trump's demand for billions in wall funding has been the main driver, according to a Democratic lawmaker close to leadership. Staff have been discussing the idea of postponing the State of the Union for months, with some expressing concern about scheduling travel plans for lawmakers and guests as well."

Of course it's about airtime, nothing more or less.

Given the American Gothic optics of their last prime-time rebuttal of Donnie Little Hands, having to appear on TV again is the last thing that Pelosi and Schumer need, especially during the shut-down.

As with most things in the universe, it's multifaceted, not just one or another.

Why is this concept so hard for right wingers to comprehend? There are many very good reasons to delay the SOTU while the government remains non-functioning because of the person longing to give the speech and bask in the spotlight. Trump is trying to usurp Congress's Article One rights and his cheerleaders wave their pom-poms like it's a football game.

Imo, a case could be made that Trump's unconstitutional overreach is grounds for impeachment because as written above, his oath implies his allegiance is to shepherd government not shutter it because he can't bend two co-equal branches to do his whims. How would you feel if Trump threatened to close the government by telling the SCOTUS that unless they ruled on a case the way he wants that they won't get funded one penny? If he succeeds in his attempt to use brinksmanship on this, then he will most certainly use it for every single thing he wants from this point forward. Our government will move from one threat to the next, over and over.

I simply cannot understand how the GOP doesn't see what is right before their eyes. Trump has no governor, he has no sense of moderation nor right or wrong. He lives with a sense of personal entitlement because no one will ever tell him no. Does anyone want to argue that Trump would take this penny - if he were to be given what he wants - and NOT try to turn it into a million pounds?

Months?

How long have the democrats known they'd win the midterms? Were they aware Trump was going to throw a temper tantrum and shutdown the government "months" ago?

Seems like someone's reporting opinions rather than facts.

The crisis is Trump wants to build a wall using taxpayer dollars.

Then he can cut costs, say the whole thing is infeasible and pocket billions, so he can actually be the billionaire he's always claimed to be.

Good for them.

Trump's word is worthless:

January 9, 2018: Trump holds bipartisan meeting at the White House that cameras televise for nearly an hour. He indicates multiple times he is willing to compromise on DACA, despite some contradictions within the meetings, and says "when this group comes back -- hopefully with an agreement -- this group and others from the Senate, from the House, comes back with an agreement, I'm signing it." The so-called "four pillars" also come out of this meeting -- that a deal shall include DACA, family-based migration, the diversity lottery and border security.

January 11, 2018: After months of meetings, Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Lindsey Graham go to the White House to propose to Trump a compromise worked out by their group of six bipartisan senators. The offer includes a path to citizenship for eligible young immigrants, the first year of Trump's border wall funding, ending the diversity visa lottery and reallocating those visas, and restricting the ability of former DACA recipients to sponsor family.

Trump and the White House invite hardline Republicans to the meeting and he rejects the deal, making his now-infamous "-------- countries" comment in the process.

I think Nancy is more worried about the Dems being unable to provide an rebuttal to whatever the President says in the SOTU because their stance places illegals over citizens. Worse, you can bet 100% on AOC demanding to do her own rebuttal - which will be high humor. AOC is the gift that keeps on giving and her going on live TV to call ICE a terrorist organization and demanding more diversity hand-outs will sink any support the Democrats have with mainstream America.

Trump should call Nancy's bluff and do the SOTU from the oval and personally set up a podium for AOC to provide the rebuttal.

Donald Trump is a man who takes orders from those he is frightened of and those he's in debt to, and then pretends he's in charge. We've never had a weaker man as president. The Oval Office is too small. Trump needs a bigger place but not so big that it has a lot of empty seats. The media will have cameras in the back of the room, too.

Trump's best bet is video tape at an undisclosed location with phony sound tracks and crowd size spliced in for timely effect. That way he can just monotone his way through the State of the Union and nobody will be the wiser.

That way we can just change channels or nod off. Also, the tape should be restricted to FOX only.

See how easy that was. Everybody gets what they want.

Stop being stupid.

The funding for border security was already in place and has already been approved for this year by the Senate.

The House has passed the necessary appropriations.

The Senate has not announced plans to take up the House-passed measures.

There is no need for the Speaker of the House to be in the House until the Senate passes the House approved bills.

So the real Question is....

Except then it wouldn't be a State of the Union Address would it? You know the one constitutionally demanded? The Democrats aren't stupid. The thing is even though it plays into their hands this move is totally valid from pretty much every angle. Their is no money for this, the government is shut down - it IS a genuine security concern. Of course the fact it denies megamouth a moment to berate them is just icing on the cake. Of course he could get cozy somewhere else and address the nation, that's pretty much just the President speaking to the people. He isn't good at it and only does it rarely. He tried it once and hurt his cause. And of course the Democratic rebuttal would follow again...

Oh the morality of it all.

Except then it wouldn't be a State of the Union Address would it?

Sure it would, he could label it whatever he wants...

You know the one constitutionally demanded?

No you don't say ...

The Democrats aren't stupid.

Remains to be seen, haven't seen anything intelligent from either side in a long time.

Their is no money for this, the government is shut down - it IS a genuine security concern.

Yet Pelosi could send security to Hawaii over vacation? Or Afghanistan. Trust me, Pelosi's just playing games, its not a money issue, its WashingtonMonumentSyndrome.

He isn't good at it and only does it rarely. He tried it once and hurt his cause.

His border speech was well received....

And of course the Democratic rebuttal would follow again...

And we saw how poorly that went, Schumer and Pelosi were horrible by any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah, what with the higher viewership and all.

"rarely does viewership doesn't equate to quality...."

Or sentence clarity.

He doesn't need an invitation from her.

Article 2 - The Executive Branch
Section 3 - State of the Union, Convening Congress

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

Of course she is playing games - I said as much. The thing is she has a valid reason not to allow it. I'm not defending it and honestly don't know anything about it, but a vacation isn't going to require the kind of security the State of the Union would - all the members of Congress and the President and VP in one building at one time... Think about just how much that would. As for Vacations, he managed to send his wife down to FL again on a military jet - wonder how much that is costing...

If he gives a speech somewhere it will completely lack the effectiveness that is has from the Capital. Oval Office might be close. It just isn't as "official" - it a psychological thing.

His "border speech" raised opposition to the wall and his holding the government hostage. His best speaking is that halting 5th grade level speaking he does to his base at rallies. It's still not good but he feeds off their worship. Schumer and Pelosi were better received by the general public. Frankly I didn't watch any of that dog and pony show. I don't disagree that Pelosi should not be taking that trip during a shutdown btw - wonder when it was planned? These things don't happen overnight.

Unaware that since 9-11 the Speaker, VP and President have been using separate government planes, a fuming Trump plotted revenge against Pelosi by demanding she fly commercial coach henceforth. Then he put Melania on Pelosi"s 737 plane for a private flight to Florida.
