Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

U.S. troops were among those killed Wednesday in an attack in northern Syria, the U.S. military has confirmed to CBS News. The U.S.-led coalition in Syria, Operation Inherent Resolve, confirmed in a tweet that, "U.S. service members were killed during an explosion while conducting a routine patrol in Syria today."

"@VP Pence says, "The caliphate has crumbled and ISIS has been defeated.""

ISIS is probably a follower on Twitter, and thought they'd voice their own opinion.

#2 | Posted by Danforth at 2019-01-16 11:32 AM | Reply

Not a routine patrol. Assassination attempt on the Syriac Military Council leadership, whom was going to a restaurant in Manjib. It's a predominately Sunni area attempting to be secular post-ISIS. Expect more explosions.

For those following the actual conflict maps instead of US headlines, ISIS is down to 3, small neighborhoods. The Iraqi Shia milita are openly talking about crossing the border to attack that last pocket, but are not necessary.

"ISIS claimed responsibility" which doesn't mean they are responsible. Still, Trump and Pence claiming ISIS is dead makes me uneasy and reminds me of Bush's "mission accomplished" banner.

"For those following the actual conflict maps instead of US headlines, ISIS is down to 3, small neighborhoods."

It was reported in the past the a number of the ISIS fighters in Syria came there from other countries. Do we know if most of those fighters died in Syria or managed to return to their home countries?

#6 | Posted by Gal_Tuesday at 2019-01-16 11:56 AM | Reply

According to the CIA, most died. The fear of thousands returning to their home countries to conduct terrorism was unfounded.

#7 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2019-01-16 12:16 PM | Reply

That's not to say individuals and even small groups did not escape. Some did and turned themselves in to their home countries and begged for mercy. Some groups are still hiding in parts of Syria and Iraq, gone to ground and hidden by friendly Sunni locals.

Same issue in this OP. It's mostly Sunni in Manjib. ISIS sympathizers remain and will offer them help and shelter. It's likely how they knew to attack this place at the right time.

Also the fear that they are hiding among the people trying to cross the southern border into the US?

#9 | Posted by Gal_Tuesday at 2019-01-16 12:18 PM | Reply

Unfounded and ridiculous. Only 6 non-US citizens on the US government's list of suspected or known terrorists have been caught trying to cross the US-Mexico border. They came through the normal ports of entries.

These are supposed to be terrorists? Ones too dumb to cross the border illegally? I'm not buying that.

Four Americans were killed in Syria, the Pentagon announced on Wednesday, yet Fox News was focused on the 2012 attack in Benghazi -- that also killed four Americans.

Fox News played video of Vice President Mike Pence speaking about Syria.

"The caliphate has crumbled and ISIS has been defeated," Pence claimed.

Fox News then quickly pivoted to discuss an attack over six years ago with Tom Fritton, of the conservative group Judicial Watch.

"Benghazi is key to this issue about uncovering [Hillary] Clinton emails -- frankly, when you look at the documents we have uncovered, you see links even between Benghazi and the current mess in Syria," Fritton argued.

The weapons from Libya were shipped to the forces fighting Assad - literally everyone knows this already. Many of those then wound up in ISIS hands as our allies flipped sides and joined them. To this day Israel is still shipping weapons into Syria.

Trump is president, but his hands are tied by the professional military (MIC + Neocon control), the deep state (Neocon control), Democrats, and RINOs within his own party. A big reason is that the Democrats and RINOs are beholden to AIPAC and other similar groups that want continual Mideast war. Prior to Trump's election, you probably would have agreed when people asked you why Obama keeps starting new wars.

The Neocons are back in the Democrat party and you see that with the howling when Trump said he was going to pull troops from Syria. Pretend whatever you like, but the party of endless war are the Democrats.

These Democrats?

A multipronged effort by alarmed U.S. national security officials, foreign allies and Republican hawks in Congress to significantly alter or reverse Trump's decision was effectively a bust.

Since Trump's abrupt Syria announcement last month, a tug of war with allies and his advisers has roiled the national security apparatus over how, and whether, to execute a pullout. Netanyahu spoke to Trump two days before the president's announcement and again a day afterward.

On New Year's Eve, Trump had lunch with Sen. Lindsey O. Graham, who favors a U.S. presence in Syria. The South Carolina Republican said Trump agreed during the lunch to meet several objectives before pulling troops out.

"We're slowing things down," Graham said in an interview early last week.

It was 24/7 Dems on CNN and MSNBC crying about how this was the biggest mistake ever and we need to keep our troops there.

That is not being a neocon nor a supporter of endless wars. This is what I saw when Trump made his announcement:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called Trump's announcement a "Christmas gift to Vladimir Putin." Sen. Tim Kaine, a leading critic of the executive branch's abuse of its wars powers, wrote in a statement, "This irresponsible move by the President poses a serious threat to servicemembers as they conduct a hasty withdrawal in an uncertain security environment." Rachel Maddow devoted a segment of her show on Wednesday to the argument that Trump might be doing this to distract from the latest Mueller investigation news. The New York Times editorial board, which has raised alarms repeatedly about the "forever wars," wrote on Wednesday that Trump should listen to his more hawkish advisors -- that withdrawal from Syria would be a gift to Putin and an abandonment of America's Kurdish allies.

The loudest criticism has come from Republican lawmakers and commentators of a neoconservative bent like Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, and Marc Thiessen, and Bill Kristol. Some left-wing Democrats, Rep. Ro Khanna for instance, have come out in full support of Trump's move. But other Democrats, particularly the leading 2020 candidates, seem to be mostly holding back, letting Republicans fight about this among themselves.

What I saw was criticism based on the fact that our troop's mission had not yet been completed and unlike Afghanistan, the goal was relatively simple and likely finite: eliminate ISIS from their foothold in Syria. Not rebuilding a country or stabilizing a government, just getting the bad guys. And secondly, we have allies doing most of the heavy lifting and they were immediately threatened with annihilation from Turkey. That too gave pause because America is not in the habit of throwing reliable allies to the wolves for an idea without a plan. Lastly, there was nothing strategic about Trump's announcement, just petulance. Hell, I want us out of Syria, but not willy-nilly without consulting our partners and those allies who'll be affected by our withdrawal. Reckless decisions should never be undertaken without an agreed upon assessment of their likely result. We lost a SecDef because of this and we might possibly lose a lot more by leaving in haste without a sensible, coordinated plan of withdrawal.

1.) Cry about low wages but are for open borders
2.) Are against a wall now to the point of shutting down the government when you had no such feelings as little as 8 years ago when Obama said we needed to control illegal immigration
3.) You are hoping for an economic recession (Bill Mahr is a classic example)
4.) You cheer on China and are happy when the trade gap widens
5.) You cheer when manufacturers announce they are moving jobs overseas
6.) You cheer on fricking ISIS!
7.) You actively hate low-education white males (yes, those privileged white males working in manufacturing), which make up the bulk of trade union members despite them being one of your largest voting blocks and source of campaign funding for 50 years
8.) You cheer on the deep state abusing powers which have become the Patriot Act on steroids
9.) You support endless war in the Middle East
10.) You hate Wikileaks now because they exposed the DNC when you cheered them for Chelsea Manning

Seriously, look in the mirror at who you have become. No amount of Trump hating is going to make you like or the respect the person staring back at you.

Mike Pence amends claim that 'ISIS has been defeated' following deadly attack on U.S. troops

"President Trump and I condemn the terrorist attack in Syria that claimed American lives and our hearts are with the loved ones of the fallen. We honor their memory and we will never forget their service and sacrifice," Pence said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "Thanks to the courage of our Armed Forces, we have crushed the ISIS caliphate and devastated its capabilities. As we begin to bring our troops home, the American people can be assured, for the sake of our soldiers, their families, and our nation, we will never allow the remnants of ISIS to reestablish their evil and murderous caliphate – not now, not ever."

Even Fox Fake News isn't shuffling along behind Trump on this one....

"Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported that a senior foreign diplomat had told the network that the deadly suicide attack on U.S. troops in Syria was a "direct result of the announcement made by President Trump that U.S. forces are pulling out."

"U.S. allies remain up in arms about the U.S. announcing it is pulling out of Syria," Griffin reported on Fox News chief anchor Shepard Smith's newscast on Wednesday afternoon.

"A senior foreign diplomat tells Fox News, ‘This attack today is a direct result of the announcement made by President Trump that U.S. forces are pulling out. These troops had a bulls-eye on them when the president telegraphed that he was ordering a pullout'," she added."

Isn't it convenient how ISIS decided to send a suicide bomber in to kill himself and US troops just when Donnie was trying to pull troops out?

Seems like the Saudis want us to stay. They sent in their henchmen to give Republicans the incentive they needed to argue we shouldn't leave yet.

Let's play the Logic Game.

Q: Is ISIS better off with the US in Syria attacking them or not attacking them?
Q: Is the US more likely or less likely to stay in Syria if they kill some of our troops?

You cannot square these 2 points and come to a conclusion that the US should be in Syria. Either the attack was totally unrelated to the pull out OR ISIS wants us in Syria for some reason (recruiting or we are moderating the way that the Russia, SAA, and Iran are killing them). You cannot come to a conclusion that the best choice of action is for the US to stay.

If you want to discuss what has happened since...I think the roughly 90% vote count that the Democratic Party takes for granted among black speaks for itself - no rationalization can explain that degree of disparity.

Oh, I think seeing how Republicans reacted to the CRA had something to do with it...between 1964 and today. And anyone who can't see the attempts at voter suppression by Republicans against black voters is either blind, or has his head in the sand.

"You rightly cite math pretty much all of the time. Can you do the same for history?"

However, when I say "Let's play the Logic Game", it does not follow that someone would respond with a statement containing the word ammo. You see, ammo works in the first example because of the word "battle". It does not work in the second because it uses the word "game". Games are not associated with ammunition so this is a non-sequitur. I think your problem is that you never understood the first joke so you think funny part is just the punchline because you don't know how the sentences relate.

"I think it is pretty clear that you didn't graduate from any university. "

And I'm sure you're dead wrong; I just don't feel like playing your idiotic game. You can't seem to tell the truth, or employ simple logic, so you're bound and determined to attack my education instead.

"Self-loathing is not a good mindset."

Don't worry; with good teachers, if you apply yourself, you'll learn how to construct and punctuate just like the adults.

"You are one of those uneducated white guys"

Riiiiiight. We're always the ones who skip a grade or two.

Sorry, but I am not going to play with you. You have yet to post anything worthy of my time. When you do, you will get a response.

"No, you don't bring ammo to a game."

Depends on the game.... since you want to split hairs and all.

Yep, you skipped all 4 years of college. You are a self-hating, uneducated, white guy. No wonder why you fit in with Snoofy and Dick so well.

I'm sure my graduating class will be surprised by the news.

"You are a self-hating, uneducated, white guy."

Well, you got one out of three. Better than your average.

At first I didn't like Danforth, but then I downloaded all his material without paying for it, and eventually he kind of grew on me.

He keeps that up and he'll draw heat from Dulli and Rightostupid for throwing off the DR Right's remedial grading curve.

Not to worry; that goes away with a couple of days of antibiotics.

If you have to go back sixty years to deflect from the objective fact that Republicans are the obvious choice of racists across America, you might not have an argument.

And they said you were dumber than a box of hammers....but you are just uneducated, not stupid. All I needed to do was to explain to you how your punchline has to flow logically from the original statement and here you go with a game effort. There is hope for you yet!

Posts the guy hiding from his former moniker on the DR.

"All I needed to do was to explain to you how your punchline has to flow logically from the original statement..."

And prove you never heard of the phrase "a battle of wits".

"There is hope for you yet!"

I wish I could say the same about you.

""1.) Cry about low wages but are for open borders"
What on Earth does the border have to do with wages? "

Actually illegal immigration does lower wages. That is Reagan granted 3,000,000 illegal immigrants amnesty in the 1980s and stopped holding businesses accountable for hiring undocumented workers. The meat packing and construction industries wanted to kill the union labor that dominated those industries. By allowing a flood of cheap undocumented labor to be hired and not punishing the executives that hired them when caught Reagan made that happen.

Reagan was the single biggest enemy of the middle class there was. That was until Donny Dealmaker.
