On January 15, Mitch McConnell again blocked a bill introduced by Democrats to reopen the government, saying,"The solution to this is a negotiation between the one person in the country who can sign something into law, the president of the United States, and our Democratic colleagues."

McConnell could end the shutdown with a phone call. He just needs to tell the members of the Senate that he will allow a vote. He owns this and every bad thing associated with it. I hope his constituents are seeing what a piece of crap he really is.

""The solution to this is a negotiation between the one person in the country who can sign something into law, the president of the United States, and our Democratic colleagues."

His Democratic colleagues don't want the wall.

And, for that matter, neither do his Republican colleagues.

It sounds like his constituents agree with him. Most of the country doesn't, but if the ones that actually vote for him like what he is doing then there is no hope he will do the right thing. I hope he loses his seat over this, but from all accounts it appears that he is doing what his base wants because he is up for re-election 2020. God help us.

If he holds firm on the shutdown he will not be reelected, neither will Trump. They need to consult with Newt Gingrich. Democrats need to refer to Trump as the "dictator wannabe" that he is in every reference to him. Presidents haven't, in the past, shut down the government over things like the stupid wall. If he gets his wall this way then he will use the threat of a shut down to get anything else he wants in the future. Putinesque sort of tactic IMHO.

@#4 ... His Democratic colleagues don't want the wall.

And, for that matter, neither do his Republican colleagues. ...

That's an important point to remember as Pres Trump and Sen McConnell try to pin the shutdown on the Democrats.

Even when the White House and Congress were all Republican-controlled, Pres Trump could not get his wall.

This is a fabricated crisis.

Even the Border Patrol is less than enthusiastic about the wall...

An excerpt from the Border Patrol Union webpage that was deleted this month:
web.archive.org

  • Walls and fences are temporary solutions that focus on the symptom (illegal immigration) rather than the problem (employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens).

  • Walls and fences are only a speed bump. People who want to come to the United States to obtain employment will continue to go over, under, and around the walls and fences that are constructed.

  • Walls and fences will undoubtedly result in an increase in fraudulent documents and smuggling through the Ports of Entry.

  • Walls and fences do not solve the issue of people entering the country legally and staying beyond the date they are required to leave the country, a problem which will undoubtedly increase as more walls and fences are constructed.
