MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle implied on Tuesday without citing evidence that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is being blackmailed by President Trump. Ruhle hosted a panel discussion about why Graham has pivoted from being a past critic of Trump to one of the president's biggest allies in the Senate. "It could be that Donald Trump or somebody knows something pretty extreme about Lindsey Graham," Ruhle said before quickly ending the segment. "We're gonna leave it there." Ruhle did not elaborate on her theory that Graham is being blackmailed by Trump or a member of his administration. Before the MSNBC host voiced her unproven theory.

Putin probably told Trump how much money Graham has taken from him.

Oh, please. Give me a break.

A far more likely reason... Sen Graham saw all the turnover inside the Trump administration, and knew the best way to get a spot in the White House was to flatter Pres Trump and/or say what he wants to hear.

It worked for the new person currently being questioned for the AG position.

Homophobic trash from MSNDNC, and it's not the first time.

Yeah, it wouldn't be Trump but Putin who is blackmailing Graham, and if he was, it probably wouldn't be about his sexual preferences but about something financial in his background. Same as Trump. It's not the pee-pee tape, people.

I have also heard it suggested, probably based on his friendship with McCain, that Graham may be a mole for the deep state and his friendship with Trump is just a ruse. Then again I've heard that Trump himself is working for the deep state and will soon be brining down all the living Democratic presidents and their associates.

"Head of Democratic Super PAC says Lindsey Graham is being blackmailed with a ‘serious sexual kink'"

How low can they go?

Glenn Greenwald

@ggreenwald

This is repulsive, homophobic gutter trash from the Chairman of @TheDemCoalition - of the kind that has been historically used for the most nefarious smears. But it's done with the right political ideology so it's fine.

Jon Cooper @joncoopertweets

A Republican just told me that he doubts @LindseyGrahamSC is kowtowing to Trump (and indirectly Putin) because he's being blackmailed over his sexual orientation (an open secret) or even financial corruption. Rather, he thinks it probably involves some pretty serious sexual kink.

Nah, follow the money. Forget the kinky bits like pee-pee tapes.

Three floors below a pedophilia ring?

Say wasn't Hillary accused of having a lesbian lover?

Just look at Nulli pretending to care about gays.

And, of course, Michelle was accused of secretly being a man, by folks who aren't too keen on transgender rights.

"Homophobic trash from MSNDNC, and it's not the first time."

I know, seriously. It's over the top. I remember when they were saying that Obama was gay and that Michelle Obama was really a man. They even published photos of her with member showing through her dress.

Wait, that wasn't MSNBC.

Nulli has to defend Graham -- He's their token dandy. He allows them to deny their homophobia.

What a bunch of Republican snowflakes.

And just a baker's dozen years ago, they were overwhelmingly voting to permanently codify gays as second class citizens in the Constitution.

John Stewart was implying the same about Graham years ago.

Frankly this sounds like MSNBC's version of Faux News spreading fake new. In this particular case would it surprise me if it was true? No but I am not biting. It is plausible even but at the same time the tRump base of mouth breathers would just as soon vote anyone not backing tRump out of office in the primaries with a rapid pro-tRumper

Congressional Republicans also caught by Russia, so protect Trump: Ex-GOP White House lawyer

Lindsey Graham

The South Carolina senator, Painter and Watt point out, had a long public track record as a principled, independent conservative. He also had a long public track record as a Trump critic, including calling him a "kook," "crazy" and a "race-baiting xenophobic bigot." Graham vigorously supported former FBI Director Robert Mueller's appointment to lead a special-counsel investigation into alleged "collusion" between Russia and members of Team Trump.

Then, quite suddenly in 2017, Graham's attitude and statements about Trump flipped. Painter and Watt write that "Graham began to contradict himself in a way that was totally out of character for him." Indeed, he became arguably Trump's biggest supporter and defender, pushing back hard against Mueller's investigation. Long an institutionalist, Graham began to mimic Trump's criticism of a "Deep State" and a corrupt FBI out to get the president.

Why the dramatic change of heart?

"We know that Senator Graham's emails were stolen by the Russians, based upon his own admission in a December of 2016 interview," Painter and Watt write. "Most of Graham's hacked emails have not been released, so it is reasonable to consider the possibility that many of his emails are still in play."

They're all dirty.
Everyone in the GOP has taken money from the NRA.
That means they've taken money from Russia.
And that's probably just one organization of many the Russians have co-opted.

Thanks, Capitalism!

Frankly this sounds like MSNBC's version of Faux News spreading fake new(s).

No, if it were on Fox they would have led with this and kept a running chyron going throughout the entire broadcast repeating the speculation as proven fact.

And did anyone actually READ what she said?

"It could be that Donald Trump or somebody knows something pretty extreme about Lindsey Graham," Ruhle said before quickly ending the segment.
First, what she said was open speculation. She never came close to stating anything as fact. And as Gal notes above (and up until then, I had forgotten about) it is a fact that Graham's emails were hacked by Russia and publicly there hasn't been a peep about them ever come forth. It's only logical under those circumstances to wonder why and otherwise rational yet partisan Senator who openly derided Donald Trump (again, noted in Gal's post above) during the 2016 primary cycle to suddenly jump to his defense when by every objective metric Trump's abhorrent behaviors have only worsened. There has to be a reason why this happened and perhaps a conversation from the Kremlin letting Lindsey know they have all his secrets could conceivably have something to do with it. Personally I think it's far more likely that Russia would have threatened to blackmail Graham and Trump knows nothing about it. Trump just thinks that his brilliance has turned a former critic into an ally.

With this set of circumstances, it's wholly rational to try and figure out why a person did a veritable 180 when the other individual involved continues to embody every single maladjusted trait the person criticized him about that made him unfit for the office. Even if Ruhle's speculation is wrong, there is an answer that no one publicly knows at the moment. She simply offered her own educated one as a possibility, she didn't try to blast it into the headlines like the thread's title wrongly implies.

Add to #24, when the Panama Papers were dropped, they didn't drop anything about Americans.
So, I'm guessing, that most of Congress is in those papers.
Which are of course held by Wikileaks, which is of course a Russian intelligence agency.

People can hold whatever opinions they want about Ruhle but Graham's flip-flop about Trump is completely undeniable. I haven't like Graham ever but today I think he is a traitor and until it is proven otherwise I will always believe that about him. I have zero respect for him and if he isn't being blackmailed then there is some other nefarious reason why he has flipped for Trump.
