Unlike our ape cousins, humans require high levels of physical activity to remain healthy. For two million years humans were required to work hard to hunt or grow food. Then civilization set in, with industrial agriculture and now we fill up on instant food. Binge watching Game of Thrones Will Cost You One Day on this Planet. Science has established that the absence of exercise contributes to chronic stress in the developed world, which in turn promotes obesity and disease.
The problem is there is no evolutionary pressure to lose the ancient simian weakness for gluttony and sloth. We are in fact very different from our ape relatives who all evolved to be less active.
