Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, January 13, 2019

The partial shutdown of the United States government affects far more than the 800,000 federal workers who are either furloughed or working without pay. The impact of the shutdown is radiating throughout the economy, and some areas of government that remain open will soon run out of funds.

The Republican whip in the House of Representatives said Sunday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer "don't want to reach a solution" on the shutdown, saying that "not one single time" have the congressional leaders given a counteroffer to the president and Republicans who are negotiating to reopen the government.

"Clearly, you've seen a number of offers put on the table by President [Donald] Trump to try to resolve this issue," Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana told George Stephanopoulos in an interview on "This Week."

"Not one single time, George, has Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer put a counteroffer on the table except a dollar. Nancy Pelosi said a dollar. That's not serious, we all know that. It's time for them to come to the table," the congressman said.www.yahoo.com

Trump initially signaled that he would back a government funding bill without the wall money, sending Pence to tell Republicans in the Senate that he was on board... But Trump later reversed himself in response to a backlash on conservative media, leaving Senate Republicans stunned and Pence looking powerless.

"The signal of losing crying party politics." - #12 | Posted by Crassus at 2019-01-13 09:33 PM

🌊 Democrats won control of the US House
🌊 Republicans Suffer Worst House Defeat in U.S. History Based on Popular Vote
🌊 Democrats national lead in raw House votes broke the record for largest vote total in the history of midterm elections
🌊 Democrats earned 53.1 percent of the overall vote in House races while the Republicans earned only 45.2 percent
🌊 Democrat's vote margin bigger than Tea Party's in 2010.
🌊 Democrats received over 61,000,000 votes (Republicans received 45,000,000 in 2010)
🌊 Biggest GOP loss since the Watergate mid-term election in 1974
🌊 Republicans lost 323 state legislative seats (367 since Trump took office)
🌊 Republicans lost 7 governorships, including key 2020 Midwest states in PA, WI and MI.
🌊 6 state legislatures flipped control from GOP to Democratic (7 since Trump took office)
In Orange County, California, what was once known as Reagan Country, there are 6 Congressional Districts:
Before November 6th, the GOP held 4 of the 6
🌊 Now, Democrats hold all 6 seats
In New England, the place where the expression "rock-ribbed Republican" was created:
🌊 Democrats hold all 21 Congressional seats
🌊 11 of 12 US Senate seats are held by Democrats (or independents who caucus with Democrats)
In the races for the US Senate:
Republicans defended 9 seats and lost 2 (a 22% loss rate)
🌊 Democrats defended 26 seats and lost 4 (a 15% loss rate)
So much for "losing crying party politics."

Thank you for clarifying what the situation is.

Legal definition of EXTORTION:
Most states define extortion as the gaining of property or money by almost any kind of force, or threat of 1) violence, 2) property damage, 3) harm to reputation, or 4) unfavorable government action. While usually viewed as a form of theft/larceny, extortion differs from robbery in that the threat in question does not pose an imminent physical danger to the victim.

While I feel bad for what is happening with people's paychecks, at the same time Trump is working towards giving what people who voted for him want.

Trump supporters for the most part see a growing danger to the United States from porous borders.

Law enforcement alone can not solve it and would appear physical barriers are going to be required.

All this talk about immigration is not the crux of the matter.

Most Trump supporters are not opposed to immigration, per se.

Just the lawlessness that is accompanying it.

I think Hispanics will be a major aspect of the future of America and I am fine with that.

#24 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2019-01-14 06:59 AM | Reply

Well, this blows a giant hole into any argument that this is about money - clearly it is not. Even if the wall was 100% ineffective, the worst that happens is the US construction industry is gifted $5B in government tax dollars. It is not like we are burning the money, it will go to buy US made cement, steel, and pay US worker wages. With the $13B negative impact on GDP, we can no longer have a debate whether this is about wasting money. We can no longer have a discussion about whether this will be effective. The only debate to have is whether the wall is moral or not, like Pelosi says. The debate is about whether the US should have open borders or not. I think it is clear that the Democrat party position is to have open border as the ideal scenario or status quo as the fall back. Either way wages are depressed for their large donors. The worst thing that can happen is a deal that builds a wall, stops further illegal immigration, and either deports or fully legalizes the illegals currently here. Fully legalizing the illegals currently here is not a desirable scenario for the Democrats, that leads to worker rights and rising wages. They don't want that.

Trump supporters for the most part see a growing danger to the United States from porous borders.

- Yes, correct.

Law enforcement alone can not solve it and would appear physical barriers are going to be required.

- Again, correct. We have had the status quo for 40 years and the illegal population is over 20M. Including children of illegals (anchor babies), this is probably closer to 30M.

Most Trump supporters are not opposed to immigration, per se.

- That depends on the person. Some people see the major issues as criminality. For those, they focus on illegal immigrants vs. legal immigrants. Others (myself included), see the issue as over stressed social services coupled with depressed wages. Studies have estimated the wage depressing effect of illegal immigration at $180B/year. I think this number is low. I would predict the rising wages and increase employment from controlling illegal immigration would lead to more people in the middle class combined with a drastic decrease in drug addiction, etc which are mainly symptoms of poverty and lack of opportunities.

I think Hispanics will be a major aspect of the future of America and I am fine with that.

- 100% agree. I celebrate Cinco De Mayo with everyone else.

Since the start of the new Congress, the Democratic-led House has voted four times on measures that would re-open all or some of the federal government. The number of votes in the Republican-led Senate, at least so far, is zero -- and that's not because of filibusters, but rather, because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hasn't brought any bills related to the shutdown to the floor.

The GOP leader's argument has been that there's simply no point in passing bills the president opposes. I disagree. For one thing, Trump has been known to change his mind for mercurial and unpredictable reasons. Put a bill in front of him that would end the shutdown and Trump might feel compelled to sign it, even if he says otherwise.

For another, as McConnell may recall, the Constitution offers lawmakers a tool known as a "veto override."

All the Kentucky Republican, who's maintaining an alarmingly low profile as the fight drags on, has to do is stop pretending that Trump is his boss, and take the same position McConnell held four weeks ago.

When all you've got is lies, you lie... about facts; about history; about details; about nuances; about everything that proves you're a liar.

I question whether Trump really has any intention of building the wall. He could have done it by now if he really wanted to. The idea of the wall is more powerful than an actual realized wall could ever be. With what he's doing now, at least he can get suckers on one side to believe he made a real effort to do it, and reel some suckers in from the other side to make dumb statements which make them look weak on if not opposed to border security.

"It's worth keeping the government closed just for the joy of watching the triggered liberals."

It's worth $13 billion dollars a month for the joy of watching triggered liberals.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Party of Fiscal and Personal Responsibility.

"Just like how we laugh at you now over you stating Trump's economic plan would not work"

I never said that, or anything like that. I merely pointed out ONE report does not a trend make.

Why do you always feel the need to lie about my positions?

"we will laugh at you even harder after Trump builds the wall"

Do you actually believe that?!?

If so, I won't have to wait to laugh at you; I'm doing it now.

I think it is clear that the Democrat party position is to have open border as the ideal scenario or status quo....

#36 | POSTED BY DONNERBOY AT 2019-01-14 11:05 AM

Wait, most the the Usual Suspects on the DR Left have been screaming for months that "open borders" is not the Democratic party position.

You guys seriously need to make up your minds.

I get what you are saying, but either it is "clear" or it is not. I admire that DBoy has admitted his support for that position, at least he is being honest.

Conservatives have long agreed with DBoy that it is clear that the Democratic Party supports open borders, and recent history supports that claim. Now that it isn't politically convenient to admit to that, many on the Left now publically decry that policy while privately supporting it.

Ahhh, my bad, I generally don't read NoBias' posts so I understood DBoy's bolded sentence as being his position.

It's unfortunate, since I really thought he was making a tough admission based on my 73.

Pelosi has basically taken federal workers hostage and the ransom she is demanding in return is open borders because they care more about non-US citizens than US citizens.

#31 | Posted by nobiasposter101

Duh. The shutdown began last month when Republicans controlled both houses of Congress.

For two years Republicans refused to give Trump his wall money. Trump, supposed 'master of the deal' turned down a bipartisan bill offering $20 billion for a wall in exchange for a path to citizenship for millions of children brought here as children. Trump turned them down.

A strong majority of Americans don't want a wall. Ladders and tunnels make them useless, as the border agent showed Trump when he visited McAllen, TX last week. TWO tunnels UNDER the wall .. right there in one of the busiest border towns with a wall.

"Duh. The shutdown began last month when Republicans controlled both houses of Congress."

Fact check: True:

Trump Won't Sign Senate Spending Bill as Shutdown Deadline Nears December 20, 2018

Donald Trump will refuse to sign the Senate's version of a stopgap spending bill that would avert a partial government shutdown because it doesn't include funds he's demanded for border security, House Speaker Paul Ryan said after a White House meeting with the president.

The president previously said he would be "proud" to shut down the government if he doesn't get the money. McCarthy said that if the House passed a bill with border funds and the Senate stripped the money back out, "the president wouldn't sign it."

Without an agreement to fund the government by midnight Friday, nine departments including Homeland Security will close just before the Christmas holiday.

Speaks calls the Democratic Party the "Democrat Party" and he's pretty far left and is often on record as pointing out how much worse the GOP is than the Democratic Party. My point is, ROC may have either missed it or not thought much of it.

I notice it now when people drop the "ic" but that's because you call it out with some frequency so I am simply more aware.

I have never supported "Open Borders" .

No one I know in the Democratic Party supports "Open Borders".
Open Borders is a meme invented by Professional Liars.

Like this one:

"The Democrats want open borders. They want anybody they wanted, including MS-13, pouring into the country."

Real or Not Real?

Real.

While it is a fact that Democrats in Congress don't want Trump's wall it is equally true that Republicans in Congress don't want it either.

As if liberals don't have anything else to worry about that if someone drops IC from the end of DEMOCRATIC.

Republicans form the republican party. So democrats form the ________ party.

Now move on to why trump is willing to waste 13 billion a month until he gets his giant "Whites only" sign on the southern border.

So. During a hostage crisis. When the gunmen refuse to release their hostages until all their demands are met.

That's the hostage negotiator's fault for not handing over the getaway car and $5 billion dollars.

Got it.

Trump said it was his shutdown. Are you calling him a liar?

You get your info about the left's ideals from people who are paid to lie about the left's ideals.
And you buy it because you're gullible.

The Shutdown Is Mitch McConnell's Fault

It's Trump's insistence on a wall that has manufactured this crisis, and it's the White House that has been leading negotiations with Democrats in Congress. But even if it feels like Trump is holding the government hostage to get his wall, he can't do it alone -- Republicans, and in particular Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, could restore what passes for normality in this era any time they wanted to.

#94 | Posted by ClownShack at 2019-01-15 05:41 PM | Reply

So let me get this straight, you lefty democrats are smacking at trump, he wants 5.1 billion for the wall and you are denying it which is causing a loss of 13 billion a month.

Now that take some fiduciary ------ thinking.
