Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, January 13, 2019

Despite a partial government shutdown with no end in sight, about 30 Democratic members of Congress traveled to Puerto Rico this weekend -- with their families and lobbyists -- for a winter retreat where they also planned to see a special performance of the hit Broadway show "Hamilton." Those attending the Congressional Hispanic Caucus BOLD PAC gathering in San Juan also planned to meet Saturday with Puerto Rican officials to discuss ongoing cleanup efforts from Hurricane Maria, according to a report. "This year's winter retreat promises to be our most widely attended yet with over 220 guests, including 39 Members of Congress and CHC BOLD PAC supporters expected to attend and participate!" a planning memo said.

"Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda began a two-week run of his hit play Friday in Puerto Rico to raise money for artists and cultural groups still struggling in wake of Hurricane Maria. Tickets for opening night ranged from $10 to $5,000, according to the Associated Press.

"I have never felt anything like that," Miranda said of the crowd's energy, adding that singing the song "Hurricane" was a challenge. "It was very hard to sing that here in Puerto Rico because you know better than I what it is to survive a hurricane. I feel like I'm going back to Maria a little bit every time I sing it."

Hispanic democrats avoiding the border crisis while adding to the climate crisis sends a clear and distinct message to the furloughed employees - We Don't Care. Pictures are worth a 1000 words. More fodder for the 2020 campaign. Dems lounging on the beach while the peasants were freezing there a**es off in protest begging for the dems to deal so they can get paid again.

Marketing 101. Trump is in Washington where it's freezing waiting on the Dems to negotiate (true or not for the reason he is in Washington) and pictures of the Dems arriving in P.R. on a charted jet, lounging on the beach, seeing Hamilton (which a majority of those protesters could not afford to see even when getting a paycheck). The commander in chief slammed his fists on the table and walked out, vowing to shut down the government for years.

Now the Dems are participating in bringing tourism and culture to Puerto Rico, a state that Cons lethaly neglect, while also working on policy.

Sounds great. Thanks for posting.

Maybe the Cons can look at their example and try to do the very minimal job of even keeping the government open.

"I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck. ... I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down," the president said.

December 11, 2018

Fox reporter: Who's getting fired? Who's going to bear the brunt of the responsibility if indeed there is a shutdown of our government?

Trump: Well if you say ‘who gets fired', it always has to be the top. I mean, problems start from the top and have to get solved from the top. And the president's the leader and he has to get everyone in a room and lead and he doesn't do that. He doesn't like doing that -- that is not his strength. And that's why you have this horrible situation going on in Washington too. It's a very, very bad thing and it's also embarrassing worldwide.

Democrats head to Puerto Rico to assess the 'shocking' reality while Republicans play political game

This past weekend, 36 Democratic members of Congress traveled to Puerto Rico -- the largest congressional delegation ever to travel to the island. The purpose of their visit was to attend meetings sponsored by BOLD PAC, the super PAC that also raises funds for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and the Latino Victory Fund. The visit also coincided with the opening performance of the Puerto Rico run of the Broadway hit show Hamilton, which premiered in San Juan on Friday night.

After discussions with local leaders and seeing the devastation first-hand, Cárdenas noted that the amount of congressionally approved funds to actually arrive in Puerto Rico is nothing short of "shocking." He said that tens of billions have been approved, but that only a tiny amount has made its way there -- contributing to the economic decline and death toll resulting from Hurricane Maria.

Just look at how far Trump and company will go to scapegoat Democrats. It's laughable, but especially when it comes to Puerto Rico. When was the last time Republicans even mentioned the island at all or tried to help its residents? In fact, this is the most anyone in that party has talked about Puerto Rico since Trump took office -- except for blaming Puerto Ricans for blowing Trump's budget out of whack after Hurricane Maria, taking potshots at San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, and calling Puerto Ricans lazy.

They even resorted to lies about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi being on the trip. This turned out not to be true, and Trump's bestie and Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro had to backtrack the lies she spewed about Pelosi during the weekend.
