On Saturday morning, Jan. 12, Trump tweeted: "Wow, just learned in the Failing New York Times that the corrupt former leaders of the FBI, almost all fired or forced to leave the agency for some very bad reasons, opened up an investigation on me, for no reason & with no proof after I fired Lyin' James Comey, a total sleaze!" [Italics added.]
Trump complains that the F.B.I. initiated an investigation of him without first having "proof." He fails to understand that the purpose of an initial investigation is to determine whether there IS "proof" of a crime committed by someone -- i.e., enough probable-cause evidence that they committed a crime to proceed with charges against them. If enough such "proof" already exists, you don't need an initial investigation, you just arrest them, charge them, and proceed to develop further evidence for trial.
