A lot of people in this country are living paycheck to paycheck.

Won't this be a lot of fun when people start defaulting on their payments, banks lose money on their investments, and we fall into a recession.

What's even better is, thanks to the Trump tax cuts, we're failing faster than ever before.

Trump/End of America 2020!

Largely thanks to "Conservative" economic policy.

No one to wash or iron his clothes. No pilots to fly marine one or airforce one so no more golf trips. No more plumbers to unclog his toliet when he clogs it up. Etc etc etc.....

If you work for the Federal Government and are living paycheck to paycheck, I take that as a sign of low IQ. If you live paycheck to paycheck and are in a position that has anything to do with security, you should be fired instantly as you are too much of a bribery threat. If you live paycheck to paycheck and are in a position that does budgeting, you should be fired instantly because you lack common sense.

In short, I have zero sympathy for these people. If you are that over extended financially, you have no business working for the Federal Government.

Shutdowns do nothing. A culling of the Federal Government staff would unleash economic growth like this country has never seen before. Fire 50% of all Federal Government employs. Heck, have the Senators draw straws and fired half of them too. We could fire RBG as well, she is isn't anyway.

Not everyone is born a genius like you. If you want to recruit people with higher IQs to work in government, you should start paying them more and stop shutting down and creating such an unstable work environment.

This is a profoundly odd set of posts; on one hand you denigrate the work done in government, and on the other you put it on a pedestal and say nobody but the financially responsible should be allowed to do it.

If private businesses imposed your financial responsibility restrictions on their workers our economy would grind to a halt. 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Is it your position those people are unemployable? Or only in government? And if it's the latter, why?

Are you joking right now? These peoples' jobs are completely disconnected from the business cycle. They don't have the worry about if they will make sales for the month or if they can attract new customers. They don't have to worry about competitors down the street. The don't have to worry about hours being cut or even if they will be paid. THEY WILL BE PAID EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN'T WORK. I assume you are a government flunky with that type of attitude. We have too many government employees. I don't want to attract more or better, I want to fire half we have working there now.

They average $53K/year. Sorry, you should be able to financially plan on that salary so you aren't one paycheck from bankruptcy. They don't even have to worry about medical. Sorry, government jobs tend to attract the lazy and/or corrupt....and stupid apparently.

And the government employs thousands of lawyers, doctors, scientists, and other highly trained professionals who factor into that average.

Keep changing the subject. You said anyone should be able to financially plan beyond paycheck to paycheck on the average government salary. BTW, almost all of the equations the anti-government worker cabal use are inclusive of ALL benefits, including contributions to health care, contributions to pension plan, and the employer's portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes. That technique is specifically employed by folks who want readers to be mislead, and compare, say, their "45" with the gov't's "53".

If you ask the average person how much they make, her answer might be "$45,000". That's because they know that number as their salary...even though their compensation includes all the above. IOW, her "compensation" is actually $53,000.

These peoples' jobs are completely disconnected from the business cycle.

They do have to meet a different type of cycle. I mean their jobs do have some metrics of performance and are sort of important.

Examples

Prison Guards-no prison escapes, minimal violence within prison
Coast Guard-rescue boaters in distress, interdict drugs and illegal immigrants

IRS Workers-review and process federal income, issue refunds to appropriate tax payers
FDA Workers-no outbreaks of E Coli

Some people consider these types of services rather important

It's telling that the same folks who fault federal employees living paycheck to paycheck are the same folks that cheer zero'ing out planned federal employee cost of living increases, thus exacerbating the need to live paycheck to paycheck.

The truth is, wage AND benefit compensation has been getting worse for federal employees since the 80's (just take a look at the changes to the pension plans between CERS and FERS) but that doesn't stop morons on this thread crapping all over federal employees and the contributions they make.

It's not just about being over extended, it's the fact that people are expected to work and not get paid.
Last time I looked at my pay stub was Friday- they're still operating at the IRS. It's not a shutdown, it's a political stunt that politicians (mostly Trump) are using common people as chess pawns. To say otherwise is dishonest.
