Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A core group of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus is urging President Donald Trump against the explosive step of declaring a national emergency to build his wall. Multiple Republicans in the conservative group have privately raised their concerns with the Trump administration, fearing it would lead to a years-long legal standoff that Democrats could win while setting a dangerous precedent for the presidency, according to more than a dozen lawmakers and GOP aides.

... Trump's possible pursuit of an emergency declaration on the border ...

Pres Trump wants to call the national emergency, so that the Democrats will raise a court challenge.

The court challenge will go slowly, so Pres Trump will negotiate on the budget, without wall funding because of the court case, bringing the shutdown to an end.

Pres Trump will then frame the Democrats and the courts as anti-American because they are against border security.

Pres Trump will also tell everyone how caring he is for the Federal employees because he got them back to work.

Pres Trump also keeps his base energized on the border issue going into 2020 because the court case will take a while. Keeping the base energized is, of course, the entire point of this exercise.

imo, of course.

"Pres Trump wants to call the national emergency, so that the Democrats will raise a court challenge."

Democrats are not mounting a court challenge. They are refusing to pass a bill to give the Dictator what he wants and they should continue to refuse to do so. They should NEVER give in.

The Freedom Caucus is why we have a shutdown in the first place.

Now they're calling their own bluff?

At least a few republicans recognize what this-an Enabling Act.

-long legal standoff that Democrats could win while setting a dangerous precedent for the presidency,

It's awfully naïve to think that there would still be a presidency after trump declares an emergency.

@#2 ... Democrats are not mounting a court challenge. ...

I did not say the Democrats are mounting a court challenge.

Please read what I did say, paying attention to present vs future tense. ;)

The Freedom caucus is said to be concerned on constitutional grounds as well they should be:

Rep. Eric Swalwell @RepSwalwell

Gun violence is a national emergency

Looks like Pres Trump is backing away from his ill-advised threat to declare a national emergency. Temporarily, at least.

When Pres Trump visited the border, things must not have been as bad at the border as Stephen Miller was pushing them to be.

President Trump is going to feel the heat increasing now that a payday for government worker is passing. Those folks, their families and their friends along with millions of us who don't actually know them are going to get increasingly angry that Donald Trump doesn't think he needs to convince Congress that what he wants is necessary and instead thinks he can just shut down the government if he doesn't get his way. He is acting as if he is a dictator, Congress needs to stand firm if only to convince him that we don't have dictators in the United States.

@#9 ... Donald Trump doesn't think he needs to convince Congress that what he wants is necessary and instead thinks he can just shut down the government if he doesn't get his way. ...

Even when Pres Trump had Republicans controlling both houses of Congress, he was not able to convince Congress of the necessity of his vision for the wall. That there should tell him something. Even a Republican-controlled Congress told Pres Trump to go take a hike.

And now Pres Trump is throwing a temper tantrum because the newly-elected Democratic House of Representatives is also not willing to do his bidding?

Maybe Pres Trump should just stop trying to play the southern border for political gain.

@#11

(not disagreeing with your comment)

On the other hand, if Pres Trump backs off (as he is appearing to be starting to do), then it will be viewed as Pres Trump capitulating to the Democrats.

It looks as if Pres Trump has painted himself into a corner, and just continues to paint the floor...

Meanwhile, February 7 is rapidly approaching....

By his mere presence Trump is a dangerous precedent for the Presidency.

How do you figure?

This is Trump's shutdown. With cameras rolling he flat-out told Schumer and Pelosi he'd shut down the government over the wall.

How does the Freedom Caucus play a role in that?

Regardless, I am glad that they are urging him to not abuse power to get what he wants.
