Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, January 10, 2019

President Donald Trump on Thursday gave the strongest signal yet that he will declare a national emergency in an effort to secure billions of dollars for a border wall, as negotiations on Capitol Hill to reopen the federal government continue to flounder.

How long have we had this "border crisis"? Was it not there before the November elections? Not during the Obama administration? Why is this something brand-new now, in his opinion? So he can make good on his Wall promise to his base? How can he expect to do that now when he couldn't do it when Republicans ran both houses of Congress? I suspect that half of his base is smart enough to know there is no "border crisis."

2014 American immigration crisis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chart illustrating the number of people apprehended by the US Border Patrol on the United States-Mexican border who are, and are not Mexican nationals, 2000-2017. Non-Mexicans arriving on the border are overwhelmingly Central American nationals.

The 2014 American immigration crisis was a surge in unaccompanied children and women from the Northern Triangle of Central America (NTCA) seeking entrance to the United States in 2014. According to U.S. law, an unaccompanied alien child refers to a person under 18 years of age, who has no lawful immigration status in the U.S., and who does not have a legal guardian to provide physical custody and care.[1] The surge increased rapidly, doubling in volume each year previously,[2] reaching extreme proportions that provoked a response from the U.S. government in 2014 when tens of thousands of women and children from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras migrated to the United States.[3] Many of the children had no parent/legal guardian available to provide care or physical custody and quickly overwhelmed local border patrols.[4]

In 2015, the proportion of migrants from Guatemala had increased, while that of migrants from El Salvador and Honduras had decreased.[5] As of September 2017, the number of unaccompanied alien children apprehended at the U.S. border from the three countries of the Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras) dropped from 2016, marking a change from the increase in apprehensions in 2016 from 2015.[6]

The shutdown began last month, when Republicans still controlled both the House and Senate, and after the Senate unanimously passed a funding bill that would've kept the government open but didn't fund Trump's wall.
But in response to criticism from his far-right supporters, Trump at the last minute decided not to support the Senate bill. During an Oval Office event with Pelosi and Schumer, Trump even said he was "proud to shut down the government" and vowed he wouldn't blame Democrats for it.

That wikipage shows immigration has gone way down since 2000.

Way down from what?

Border Patrol agents apprehended 27,518 members of family units in December, the highest monthly total on record. That figure has steadily climbed for five months, even as Trump made stopping migrant caravans the centerpiece of his midterm election strategy and drove Washington into a partial government shutdown over funding for his border wall.

Trump is getting ready to flip the script and the Dems better be smart and not let him get away with it.

Trump is going to claim his "emergency" is because the Democrats won't let him protect Americans (of course with no recognition that he never shut the government down, nor received more money for wall funding over the two years the GOP controlled all 3 branches of government) and then he is going to declare himself the champion of all the people being hurt by Trump's own decision - ie. he's going to say he's doing it for the little people (gov workers) getting hurt because the Dems love open borders. His base is going to buy it and it gives cover to the entire Republican caucus for standing with him as long as most of them did (without having to tactically endorse what almost all of them abhor, especially since he reneged on a deal and left the GOP Senate hanging a few weeks ago.

Trump creates his own reality and sure as schitt he's going to try and do it again with his emergency declaration.

From #10's USA Today link:

Border Patrol agents apprehended 27,518 members of family units in December, the highest monthly total on record.

Those caravan members, most of whom tried to exercise their legal right to request asylum in the USA, contributed to a third straight month of more than 60,000 migrants being detained at U.S. ports of entry and arrested in the vast stretches of border in between.

So, you're cheering on families being arrested for trying to enter the United States legally.

Tell me again how you're not a xenophobe. I need a good laugh.

As for the huffington post article:

80 percent of women and girls crossing into the U.S. by way of Mexico are raped during their journey.

And that's just the politics of it. The legal ramifications will probably reverberate for years if not decades once this step is taken.

Fact of the matter is the Founders never imagined such a reckless and deviant use of the law in the manner being done today. We actually need to rewrite our laws to cover the situations we keep finding ourselves in without an implicit nod to any idea that elected politicians would put the collective best interests before that of their party's. The new amended law needs to assume back actors and bad actions. We no longer need to debate "best case scenarios" since there aren't many as the entitled careen in, out and around laws with scant real accountability.

Trumpublicans don't care about rape, otherwise they wouldn't have elected Trump, Kavanaugh, or most of their politicians. Nor would they believe women invite rape upon themselves, that women's body's can block legitimate rape that rape babies are gifts from god...

Trumpublicans don't care about children dying, otherwise they wouldn't have cut spending on CHIP, SNAP, or many other services provided for children. Trump also stole money from a children's cancer charity.

Trumpublicans don't care about cops getting killed, unless it's done by an illegal immigrant.

Trumpublicans don't care about women getting killed, otherwise they wouldn't marginalize them, kill them, take away their rights to healthcare (planned Parenthood), prevent them from receiving abortions, even in life threatening situations, or if pregnancy is due to rape.

Trumpublicans don't care about anything other than themselves.

In 2009, when a military coup deposed President Manuel Zelaya at the insistence of the country's Supreme Court, then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton supported the government that was installed by the coup. While Clinton was running for president, she argued, especially to Democracy Now's Juan Gonzalez, that the coup was at least nominally constitutional, and that supporting the deposing of Zelaya was the least-bad option. That remains debatable, but what does not remain debatable is that Honduras subsequently descended into the present chaos.

I recall this being debated on the DR, and the Libbies were all supportive Obama and Hillary's policy of over turning a Democratically elected leader...

Of course, President Obama refused to even meet with the democratically elected president who was overthrown in the coup that he mentioned, even though that president came to Washington three times seeking help after the coup. That was Manuel Zelaya, a left-of-center president who was overthrown by the military and conservative segments of society in Honduras after instituting a number of reforms that people had voted for, such as raising the minimum wage and laws promoting land reform.

If the ruling National Party's candidate, Juan Orlando Hernández, wins, the future looks even darker. Hernández was an enthusiastic supporter of the 2009 military coup and was elected president of congress in January 2010. In December of last year, he led a "technical coup," in which congress deposed four members of the Supreme Court and named four new loyalist judges the next day. In August, congress illegally named a new attorney general to a five-year term. After that, Hernández controlled all the key institutions of

This is what I remember the "supreme court" ...

Despite this, however, both under Clinton and Kerry, the State Department's response to the violence and military and police impunity has largely been silence, along with continued U.S. aid to Honduran security forces. In "Hard Choices," Clinton describes her role in the aftermath of the coup that brought about this dire situation. Her firsthand account is significant both for the confession of an important truth and for a crucial false testimony.

First, the confession: Clinton admits that she used the power of her office to make sure that Zelaya would not return to office. "In the subsequent days [after the coup] I spoke with my counterparts around the hemisphere, including Secretary [Patricia] Espinosa in Mexico," Clinton writes. "We strategized on a plan to restore order in Honduras and ensure that free and fair elections could be held quickly and legitimately, which would render the question of Zelaya moot."

This whole "we need to shutdown the govt and declare an emergency at the border" stunt is meant to eat up all the MSM coverage and distract from upcoming House Democratic investigations as well Mueller's investigation and report, which Trump wants to make sure never sees the light of day:

Jonathan Franks @jonfranks

If there was "no collusion" why is he spending $2mm+ tax dollars on 17 new lawyers to try and keep the public from reading a report about collusion?

IOW, shutting down the govt and declaring a nation emergency at the border is Trump's version of wag the dog, and so far it seems to be working well for him.

I'm not going to spend the time to research it, I just figure that right wing media sources often leave out facts intentionally because that is the only way they can get otherwise rational people to go along with irrational politics and politicians. Ignorance is the coin of the realm in their version of reality. That and outright fear. Fear is their gold standard go-to and the main tenet of Trumpism.

It's pretty much all they've got on many, many topics. I long for the days of yore where we had real arguments surrounding policies that were fact-based or at least opinions/projections supported by underlying facts and not lies and intentional delusions.

But then again, I like puppies too....

Its just like with military exercises where democrats would rather see something discreet and effective while republicans would rather see some fantastical visual candy that demonstrates US might, so they vicariously forget their own impotence. Whether its a wall or boots on the ground, they just want to see something literally huge, vastly expensive, and they couldn't care less about its effectiveness or consequences.

Pres Trump has stated multiple times recently, Mexico is already paying for the wall due to the great new US-Mexico-Canada deal he made.

If that is so, then why, oh why, did Pres Trump shut down the government in order to force US taxpayers to pay for the wall?

#86 | Posted by LampLighter at 2019-01-11 11:52 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

Let's look back at Trump's actual plan for making Mexico pay for the wall.
Yes, he really had one. And it's not what he's saying now.
www.vox.com

..."It's an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion," a campaign document titled "Pay for the Wall" from his presidential bid reads. [1] ...

Trump has gone on quite a journey on how to get his border wall built, including his ideas for how Mexico would pay for it. But during the presidential race, he actually had some fairly detailed plans about it -- they're still on his campaign website.

The Trump campaign said that it would either require Mexico to make that aforementioned one-time payment, or it would extract the money from Mexico by blocking remittances to the country and undertaking other measures.

It would invoke Section 326 of the US Patriot Act -- the "know your customer" provision that requires financial institutions to know who they're dealing with in transactions -- to issue "detail regulations" under 31 CFR § 130.120-121 that would block remittance payments to Mexico from unauthorized immigrants.

The administration would then issue a rule that would include within the definition of financial institutions money transfer companies such as Western Union, include wire transfers in the statute's scope, and require immigrants prove their lawful presence in the US before sending money.

The timeline from there, the campaign said, was straightforward: Mexico would immediately protest, because $24 billion in remittances from Mexican nationals in the US go out each year, and it would then pay for the wall instead of losing that money....

In his attempt to create a national emergency at the border, Trump, is in fact creating real ones through the govt shutdown:

Henry Williams @digitalhen (Professional news @WSJ)

.gov secure website certificates have expired because there's nobody there to renew them. The #shutdown has rendered multiple government websites insecure or inaccessible.

news.netcraft.com

"Dozens of U.S. government websites have been rendered either insecure or inaccessible during the ongoing U.S. federal shutdown. These sites include sensitive government payment portals and remote access services, affecting the likes of NASA, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Court of Appeals."

Is Trump required to prove theres a border crisis?

Cause.

There isn't a border crisis.

Never was.

Actually, the number of people trying to cross the border illegally has decreased in recent years.

Undocumented immigration has been a significant political issue in recent years, and is likely to remain so throughout and beyond the presidential election year of 2016. One reason for the high and sustained level of interest in undocumented immigration is the widespread belief that the trend in the undocumented population is ever upward. This paper shows that this belief is mistaken and that, in fact, the undocumented population has been decreasing for more than a half a decade. Other findings of the paper that should inform the immigration debate are the growing naturalized citizen populations in almost every US state and the fact that, since 1980, the legally resident foreign-born population from Mexico has grown faster than the undocumented population from Mexico.

cmsny.org

Seriously. Theres no crisis. The number of illegal immigrants is dropping. If you're still concerned about immigrants, you need to take a look in the mirror and ask yourself what is it about immigrants that really bothers you. Because all the reasons most of you belch out are unfounded.

Trump tweet this morning: "Humanitarian Crisis at our Southern Border. I just got back and it is a far worse situation than almost anyone would understand, an invasion! I have been there numerous times - The Democrats, Cryin' Chuck and Nancy don't know how bad and dangerous it is for our ENTIRE COUNTRY...."

Really? Because the number of unauthorized immigrants in the US has declined 13% since 2007.

There are approximately 1.5 million less Mexican unauthorized immigrants since 2007.

The number of unauthorized immigrants in the civilian workforce is a little less than it was in 2007.

Pew Research

Less is "far worse"? Less is an "invasion"? Only in Trump world.

‘Wasting taxpayer money': Border Patrol union deletes old web page trashing Trump's border wall idea

The union which represents Border Patrol agents recently removed an old web page in which it trashed the idea of a border wall, Politico reports.

"Walls and fences are temporary solutions that focus on the symptom (illegal immigration) rather than the problem (employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens)," the union wrote.

Raw Story

Trump demands border wall in Texas visit, but spotlights contraband seized at ports of entry

President Donald Trump visited McAllen on Thursday to dramatize his demands for a border wall, though he ended up illustrating the case with drugs and guns captured at ports of entry rather than unguarded sections of the frontier.

At a briefing intended to help drum up support for the wall, customs and Border Patrol officials showed the president heroin, cash and weapons seized at ports of entry -- doing little to reinforce the case that unfenced sections of the border are a problem that justifies a disruptive government shutdown or costly construction project.

68 - Trump didn't sign it, and we had a change in Congress. the new Congress came back and passed it, and now the new Senate McConnell won't bring it up.

You didn't know that?

I'm in a much better place than most of you guys, where I'm not constantly barraged by the 24 hour news cycle. And unlike some people here I don't currently have the time to search through every detail. Of course I know the house changed and Trump didn't sign it. McConnell is truly a worm if he's blocking an override vote on a measure which had passed unanimously.

Thanks for answering my question without being a dick about it, unlike some of the posters here.

#102 - Absolutely, Sentinel. And thanks for explaining. Regarding McConnell, yes, he's blocking it (and every other bill on opening the Government, or funding border security):

"Let me say it again: The Senate will not take up any proposal that does not have a real chance of passing this chamber and getting a presidential signature," McConnell said on the Senate floor.

www.reuters.com

McConnell's not even going to entertain the option to override a Trump veto with a 2/3rds vote.
