Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, January 09, 2019

Many news outlets examined the claims Trump made during his nationally televised speech Tuesday night. The points of contradiction most of the fact checkers agree upon include: there is no evidence that Mexico would indirectly pay for Trump's "big, beautiful" wall; there is no justification to call immigration a "security crisis" as border apprehensions are down; and a wall would not stop the flow of illegal drugs as most come through the border's legal points of entry. Some agreed Trump is correct that there is a humanitarian crisis because of his administration's new policies on detaining immigrants creating overcrowded detention centers.

I'll make a few predictions:

1. Trump will lie about the severity of the situation on the southern border.
2. Trump will mislead about the 4,000 folks detained...at airports.
3. Trump will ignore the fact 6 questionable folks have been stopped at the southern border, while 41 have been stopped at the northern border.
4. Trump will blame the Democrats, specifically Pelosi.
5. Trump will tell more lies than truths.

Oh...and Mexico will not be paying for the wall.

"The shutdown is because Trump demands extending the existing border walls and barriers to vast areas that make no sense largely because they are in the Rio Grande floodplain.

Building barriers in that floodplain was such a problematic idea that a 1970 treaty between United States and Mexico explicitly bans them.

"The president really doesn't understand the issue," House Armed Services Committee Chair Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.

"But we have actually already built a wall across much of the border, and all border security experts that I talk to say, where a wall makes sense, it's already been built."

Greatest speech of all time ...

"Some have suggested a barrier is immoral. Then why do wealthy politicians build walls, fences, and gates around their homes? They don't build walls because they hate the people on the outside, but because they love the people on the inside..."

Wow what a genius ...

Trump must read Mackris's posts on the DR ....

"All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages. Among those hardest hit are African Americans and Hispanic Americans."

And even CNN agrees with Mackris ...

There is some evidence that a small slice of the native-born workforce may see wage decreases because of undocumented immigrants competing for similar jobs, dragging wages down. Research shows that the negative effects are concentrated among workers without college degrees, who are disproportionately African-American, but also includes earlier generations of immigrants.

What a great speech by a great man ...

"Peanuts. Window dressing so they can say they are for enforced borders when clearly they aren't."

Perfect description of contractors who support the Republican Party, pretend to be against illegal immigration but who hire them every day. If you are honestly against illegal immigration, which few really are, then you would oppose Republicans who pretend to be against it. Demand honesty, the GOP is the bastion of dishonesty. Profiteers pretend to oppose their own profit makers. Why? Because if we ever passed immigration reform they would have to treat immigrants like people instead of like slaves. It is not accidental that illegal immigrants largely are the primary labor source in the south, they are the closest thing to slavery that we could find. In some ways it is better than slavery because employers don't need to feed them, house them or care for them in any way. With slaves there was an investment to protect, with illegal immigants not so much.
The fact that REpublicans defend this evil practice brands them forever as evil filth, most of them know exactly what I am talking about but, hey, if they can make a buck, who cares. Right Republicans? Do any of you actually have a conscience?

The reality is hundreds of people die out on la frontera every year, thousands are raped, thousands are criminals that have no right in this country at all and even the most die hard leftist wouldn't want one of them within their community. A vast majority of the white powders come across that border and we are seeing about 70 thousand a year die from those substances. A disproportionate amount of illegals end up in prison for serious crimes. So enplane to me, what is so moral about having a border anyone with a good set of shoes and a water bottle can cross? We did catch 6 terrorist watch list individuals on the border, that begs the question, How many did we not catch? Seems that terrorists have considerable resources to pay for the best smugglers.

Where do you get that? I am willing to pay for good Chardonanay, and I do. I'm also willing to pay for single malt Scotch. Don't accuse me of being cheap, that is one thing I am totally not. My sypathy for illegal aliens has nothing to do with cheap labor, it is much more about decency to other human beings. I think you have, somehow, eliminated that from consideration. I haven't and won't.
Realize one important fact, those of us who want immigration reform do understand that with it we will have to pay immigrants more money. That is our goal. Wages won't be depressed by illegals when they can demand equal wages. Y'all pretend to believe in free trade but you don't really believe in it. If you did then you would understand that free trade also applies to labor and when you use labor that is illegal you take away all labor protection labor is guaranteed by law so that employers can exploit them, use them, throw them away. Penalize employers for exploiting illegal immigrants and we will solve our illegal immigration problem. Don't do that and it will continue until you do.

If you lock up 100 employers 1000 will stop hiring illegal immigrants. If you lock up 1000 employers 1,000,000 will stop hiring illegal immigrants. Fear of incarceration is the very basis of our criminal law system. If you don't believe in it then fine, let everyone out of jail. Otherwise shut up.

I 100% support that, but the reality is that you will walk your way back from it if Congress ever tries to implement it. Basically, employers will be hesitate to hire anyone that they suspect might be undocumented because they will be afraid of going to jail if they hire one by accident. So, you and the rest of the Left will be yelling from the rooftops about discrimination and how this policy needs to end.

Now, we all know it will never make it that far. The 0.1% that runs the DNC will never allow anything to get resolved because they are addicted to the wage depressing effects of immigration. I can actually understand their motivation. What I cannot understand is how they can motivate the useful idiots to protest so vehemently against their own self interest. A large part of the Dem base are poor people trapped in poverty level wages. The best thing they can possibly do is to stop the wage competition from the huge group of unskilled illegals.

Because ICE jails and then deports the undocumented workers but the employer just pays a fine that is a cost of doing business that is still less than minimum wage for the workers he lost and hires new undocumented workers the next day. They need to stop focusing on the workers and start actually punishing the employers.

You don't know what you are talking about. I won't debate the numbers but I can tell you the expense and difficulty are things that average Mexicans and Central American refugees could not have been able to overcome. It costs thousands of dollars for an immigrant to handle all of the road blocks. My son provided those thousands of dollars but people in Central America have absolutely no way to come up with that amount of money. But they live in an environment, enabled by the U.S., that is controlled by gangs, corrupt police and violence. Now, America, after corrupting their society wants to take no responsibility for the actions our government took to suppress "socialism" in thier nations. Hey, how about if we welcome 1,000,000 Venezuelans? They will come if you let them. Perhaps our sanctions on their economy are coming back to bite us in the ass.

Democrats have rejected President Donald Trump's border wall as ineffective, expensive and immoral. So what are their solutions to border security?

Among them: Better technology. Increased hiring for ports of entry. Improved infrastructure, such as fencing.

Democrats also unveiled legislation last year to expand refugee processing in Central American countries and to disrupt drug cartels.

Golden Arches, Chevy Logo are trademarks. Trademarks never expire, they are identities.
www.gm.com

In fact, the two protections are so legally distinct that they are managed by two different offices within the federal government. Trademarks fall under the auspices of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, while Copyrights are granted by the U.S. Copyright Office.

Trademarks were born, in part, out of a notion that consumers should be protected from confusion when seeking goods in the marketplace. Because the mark, or brand of a product becomes known to consumers, the use of that mark or symbol on a product that does not come from the original producer would mislead consumers.

Trump's immigration speech was an insult to the nation's intelligence
www.vox.com

...After watching President Trump's primetime immigration speech Tuesday, my overwhelming impression was this: Why, oh why, did anyone think it was a good idea to air this on national television?

The most memorable portion of the address came when the president listed off a series of gruesome crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. He went into graphic detail, discussing the use of a hammer on one victim and the dismemberment of another. This, he argued, is why America needs a border wall: Undocumented immigrants are dangerous, and their entry must be blocked at all costs.

Except this is false. The data shows that undocumented immigrants are actually considerably less likely to commit crimes; states with more undocumented immigrants actually tend to have lower crime rates.

So the most striking part of the whole presentation was a lie, a recitation of anecdotes designed to mislead Americans about immigration and gin up anti-immigrant sentiment to score political points.

There was no reason this should have been nationally televised. The president was not announcing news of grave national import, like an attack on American soil or a declaration of war. There's no rule that networks have to air a presidential primetime address. President Obama once tried to deliver a similar immigration address, but the networks turned him down, saying it was overtly political.

Yet they let Trump deliver a propaganda speech, one that likely persuaded very few people and left at least some Americans marginally less informed than when it began....

The problem with fact checking Trump is that neither he nor his lemmings have any interest in facts; they are only interested in their rwing nationalist rhetoric.

Fact Check:
Most drugs come in through legal points of entry. Crime rate among immigrants is lower than among avg Americans. Dems didn't ask for a steel barrier. Most of the non-flood plain border already has a wall. Most people on both sides of the border don't want a wall.

All facts, all completely ignored by our Trump Trolls.

IMHO, Trump didn't sway the thinking of anyone. Those who rabidly support him will continue to do so, those who oppose him will also. Why the network gave him prime time to make a campaign speech....I don't know the answer to that but no one can pretend there is really a crisis worthy of a Presidential speech on prime time. So, they want to help him kick off his campaign, ok, just don't pretend we don't see what they are doing.

Trump's Prime-Time Pitch on Wall Fails to Break Shutdown Impasse
www.bloomberg.com

..."The president is rejecting these bipartisan bills, which would reopen government, over his obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on an expensive and ineffective wall, a wall he always promised Mexico would pay for," Pelosi said.

The president's address was the latest in a series of public appearances -- including a cabinet meeting, a statement in the White House briefing room at which he was flanked by border patrol officers, and a news conference last week -- in which Trump simply reiterated his demands without offering any concessions. Wielding the bully pulpit, Trump has done nothing since shutting down much of the government Dec. 22 to advance his argument or resolve the dispute.

He also has failed to persuade most Americans that he's right. Fifty-one percent of adults surveyed Jan. 1-7 said Trump "deserves most of the blame" for the shutdown, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday. That's up four points from a similar poll conducted Dec. 21-25....

If last night's Oval Office speech was intended by P{res Trump to break the impasse by rallying the Country around his opinions, Pres Trump seems to have failed.

#155 I'm all for it, but just arresting them is the wrong approach. First, you empower local PDs and troopers to enforce immigration law in their jurisdiction. Second, you start with fines, and the feds split the fines with the local PD; $5000 per illegal for first violation. $10000 and a Class 3 felony for the person who approved hiring them. $50000 and a Class 3 for the CEO and COO, plus revocation of critical licenses (I'm sure the EPA, FDA, DHS, etc.. could find a safety or security risk requiring recertification).

Chuck Schumer in 2009: "630 miles of border fence" made our southern border "far more secure" because it "created a significant barrier to illegal immigration"

Maybe that's why their position is different now?

Because barriers have been built in high traffic areas and methods of crossing have shifted to get around that in the same areas without changing in the areas that don't have barriers.

In other words, some level of thought should be expended on the cost-benefit of building more wall in areas that don't have it but are difficult terrain to cross naturally.

.what I'm saying is that they strongly opposed illegal immigration, and that is not the prevailing liberal opinion today. What changed?

They saw the potential of importing future Democrat voters. They read the exit polls and voter surveys and saw Hispanics voting Dem by at least 2 to 1 margins.

Still assigning motivations, a logical fallacy in argument, and STILL ignoring the facts:

@#167 ... Schumer, ...

While the Democrats are being made out to be the villains here, Pres Trump has realized that he is starting to lose the moderate Republicans, and he has lost a number of important battles.

- Pres Trump could not get his concrete wall when the Republicans controlled the White House and both houses of Congress.

- Mexico is not going to pay for his concrete wall. (so much for that campaign promise - Promises Made, Promise Not Kept)

- At this point, Congress is not going to pay for his concrete wall.

- Pres Trump backed off, and is now saying a steel slats wall is what he really wants.

- But the government is still shutdown, and public opinion has been moving against him.

He needs to do something drastic in order to save face with his base....

Trump ends shutdown negotiations after Democrats reject wall money, calls meeting ‘total waste of time'
www.washingtonpost.com

...During the White House meeting, Democrats once again pressed Trump to reopen most of the government. Trump refused, instead asking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) whether she would agree to his wall.

When Pelosi said "no," Trump exited the meeting in the White House situation room.

"Well unfortunately, the president just got up and walked out," said Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.)." "He asked Speaker Pelosi, "Will you agree to my wall?" She said no. And he just got up and said, Then we have nothing to discuss' and he just walked out. Again, we saw a temper tantrum."...

Speaking of "adapting"

The President has ordered me and my fellow Federal Government workers to "make adjustments".

I personally think it means we can rob banks or whatever we need to do to adjust our personal financial situations.. You know... like when America was Great!!! 2nd Amendment Solutions and all to a Tyrannical Governments, etc, etc.

But, my team members, well, they disagree with me... they say it means get another job. Or clean toilets. Or barter chickens. But, I own a GUN and I prefer think it means DO another job.

Can you help us decide, please?

Also, as a side note, I happen to be the Boss. So if they try to stop me from "making adjustments" or if they even just disagree (like they are and they are pissing me off!!) with me during this National EMERGY is it ok for management (me) to just shoot them???

Just want to make sure I am clear on the New Rules.

thanks!!

The concept of a wall being the end all item is ridiculous. No I dont want to pay for it. I have a tall private fence around my house with an electronic gate but I dont for a minute think it would keep out people that wanted in, only slow them down. If someone jumps my fence or finds a way inside it, then happens to deliver a baby in my yard, that baby is not suddenly a part of my family. If a person makes it inside my property and I decide to pay them to mow my yard, wash my car or anything else, instead of turning them in, then I am part of the problem. I am against a new wall project. I want actual border security and humanitarian aid. Punish the people hiring undocumented workers, end birthright citizenship in its current form -- remove the reasons people sneak in and that will mostly stop. I am not against legal immigration but it should be fair (wait in line) and much easier than it currently is.
