Capitalist in North America and Europe disseminate capitalist values and ideological distortions about socialism. Nevertheless, the limitations of capitalism are increasingly evident, opening the possibility for better socialist movements. Human economic and social development has established the possibilities and limitations for socialism. Socialism's most important contribution to civilized development has been in public education. Dedicated teachers in higher education in capitalist societies encounter stiff repression. Socialism is able to liberate the search for truth often blocked by capitalist profit interests. Socialists recognize the rights of all persons to full and equal access to education, health, housing, nutrition, transportation, culture, and sport. Socialists understand that each person has to protect his or her own interests, but we all must care for one another. These goals require a powerful and active State promoting those values.

Cuba has been able to provide full and equal access to education, health, culture, and sport in essence exists, but not housing, transportation or even minimal nutrition requirements. By itself socialism can only partially fulfill the material desires of people. This is where Capitalism excels. Venezuela is in a crisis mode. Insufficient work incentives in state enterprises or cooperatives account for this difference. A prosperous social order must include private property, self-employment and reward based on production.

As the size of populations and production grows, so does the bureaucracy to support it. This problem haunts both Capitalist and socialist organizations, but under capitalism, resistance to bureaucratic stupidity spawns more small businesses. Otherwise, cooperation and solidarity produce more prosperity than domination and exploitation.

The author immediately confuses marxism for socialism. Marxism is like trying to quit smoking by forcing yourself to smoke a pack in one sitting in hopes you'll be disgusted by cigarettes afterward.

I thought that Socialism was considered the ugly little sister of Communism. Utopian plans always end up bring the ugliest form of Tyranny. Remember, all government eventually ends up with a guy with a gun forcing your obedience.

#4 | Posted by bayviking, You do understand the concept of the "consent of the governed"? There is the problem with heavily centralized government, it is unresponsive, ill informed and expensive. Big Brother eventually has to squash resistance to the Utopian dream by counter-revolutionaries and dissidents.
