The 21-year-old avowed neo-Nazi who murdered a woman when he plowed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters last year at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Its good that this fellow was convicted for deliberately murdering a woman with an automobile. But another example of prosecutor pile on . What is the point of a 419 year sentence? One more prisoner with nothing to lose in lock up.

If you bothered to read the article you would see that he didn't receive the death penalty.

So, nothing to be outraged about.

I don't really care one way or the other. He obviously did it so I am not too concerned with our justice system making a mistake in this case. Why do you care so much? Do you actually think that giving him the death penalty will deter anyone who would consider doing the same thing (versus life in prison)? These people don't have that much forethought. And they all either think they won't get caught, or don't care what happens to them after they get caught.

The death penalty doesn't serve as a deterrent, it just slakes simple-minded people's bloodlust. And it usually does not matter to them that much whether the object of their bloodlust actually committed the crime in question. As an example, look at home many people (mostly minorities or socially outcast) who were on death row that were eventually proven not to have committed the crime (due to DNA evidence). Our justice system is pretty bad at accurately dispensing justice to the actual perpetrators of crimes, or even consistently punishing people who are convicted of the same crimes (its called "systematic racism"). So, no... I am not in favor of the death penalty (1) because of its permanence (once you kill someone there is no un-doing it) in a justice system which has proven itself to be inconsistent and flawed and (2) because it has not been shown in any way to be an effective deterrent in preventing similar crimes in the future.

If you want to satisfy your bloodlust, go stroke your AR-15 or blow up some poor little animal with it. Your bloodlust is not worth taking away the life of an innocent human being.

JEFFJ #14: It is likely that punk will be "married" and passed around like a gym towel until he gets murdered by another inmate, thus making his "life sentence" fairly short.

"Likely?" - #14 | Posted by JeffJ at 2018-12-12 10:50 AM

JeffJ, Submitted for your approval:

The Twilight Zone episode called "Escape Clause" (S1E6 - originally aired on November 6, 1959) concerns a man who made a deal with the devil for immortality 😈:

Mean-spirited, abusive hypochondriac Walter Bedeker sells his soul to the devil (appearing as a rotund rogue who calls himself "Mr. Cadwallader" here) in exchange for immortality, adding enough conditions to keep him out of Cadwallader's clutches forever. Cadwallader readily agrees to his demands, only stipulating an escape clause which allows Bedeker to choose the time of his death if he tires of being immortal.

Bedeker uses his newfound invulnerability to collect insurance money and cheap thrills by hurling himself into life-threatening accidents. Soon growing bored with this, he comes to the realization that his constant fear of fatal illness was the one thing which gave him any interest in life. He tells his wife that he is going to attempt to regain the thrill by jumping off the roof of their apartment building.

While trying to stop him, his wife accidentally falls off the edge herself. Bedeker tells the authorities he murdered his wife, hoping to experience the electric chair.

However, due to his lawyer's defense strategy, he is instead sentenced to life in prison without parole. Cadwallader visits Bedeker in his holding cell to remind him of the escape clause. Realizing he will face eternity in prison if he does not use it, Bedeker nods and suffers a fatal heart attack. The guard discovers his lifeless body and sighs, "Poor devil..."

"There's a saying, "Every man is put on Earth condemned to die, time and method of execution unknown." Perhaps this is as it should be. Case in point: Walter Bedeker, lately deceased. A little man with such a yen to live. Beaten by the devil, by his own boredom, and by the scheme of things in this, the Twilight Zone."

Hate crime legislation is BS, because it is still impossible to read other people's minds in any fair and consistent manner. We also lack the ability to diagnose or treat mental disorders. Because of this our jails are full of people that belong in insane asylums. We can't do that because conservatives like Reagan closed most insane asylums, increasing the homeless population and associated crime.

Great stuff!

Hate crime legislation is BS

I completely agree. Murder is murder. Assault is assault. Being bludgeoned with a bat doesn't somehow hurt more if the perpetrator was doing it out of "hate".

Since you asked...I oppose the death penalty under all circumstances. The possibility of it as a punishment makes getting a conviction more difficult so more guilty people walk free while at the same time it is cause for innocent people to plea to avoid it. I also feel that when we imprison a person that we take responsibility for them. Putting them to death is cruel and unusual punishment regardless of their crime. The death policy should be abolished.

That said, an attempt to making that argument in support of this man is a lost cause. There are plenty of other people facing the possibility of death whose cases are better suited for invoking sympathy for the accused and opening the ears and possibly the minds of those who do not feel as strongly about the penalty as I.

I am surprised that you support the death penalty. I can't. Too many mistakes, too many mentally ill people executed. There is no benefit to society by executing anyone. If Germany could learn that after WWII should we also learn it? The state should not have the right to execute anyone ever. If it does have the right to execute it will execute innocent people.
